New record for Psycho

The latest in well over a decade that Psycho had a bloom (in other words the last bloom fell off) was Feb. 16. Today it still has six inflos with many buds and at least one or two flowers open on each. There are several other inflos with buds. This is uncharted times in California. Not much rain but summer weather in the winter. I wonder how long it will bloom. Bill

Bill. I Dont think it will stop this year!! Mine will be waking up in a month and I think psycho will still be going strong.

Okra: Back in '92 Minnesota had a summer where it did not get any higher than the seventies until early Sept. Lows in the forties were not unusual all Summer. I was land-scaping at the time and thanked God for that weather every day. When it finally hit the eighties in Sept. our boss actually sent us home early--- (and this was a fellow who in hot summers, would have us start at five thirty so we could beat the heat and quit early--and then-- still not send us home till seven p.m)-- because he was afraid we would get heat stroke. It was a bummer for those who like tomatoes but I still thank God for that great year.

I once grew a 275 pound pumpkin, scrawny little thing, nothing of note really, and a woman of our acquaintance decided she would like to eat the whole think. It took her about a year. She has never asked for another pumpkin in the succeeding 25 years. Do you want to get into the record growing headlines? I think strawberry's are ripe for your attention. Get one of the varieties that produce all year and see how big a strawberry you can grow. Guinness needs a new category.

perhaps, we can discuss the finer points ;). i've been posting about my adventures last year in aroid forum, but it's ultra slow and hardly anybody posts there continuously. i've had mine since july 2009 - been doing quite well, even holding onto 2 leaves on each tuber thru winter, but then it went almost into dormancy - i thought i lost it, but luckily i found grab's post in aroids and that started me on a very lengthy project. i'll update it with more details (of which there are plenty as is already) - if you're interested. i also had problems of getting more then 2-3 leaves on a stalk, but last year i finally gave it much better growing conditions and was rewarded with 4-5 leaves. past winter the first time ever it held to the majority of it's leaves, dropping only 1-2 on a stalk. so i also have high hopes for this season :). so far i have 2-3 new leaves with a couple old still holding on each tuber. one has a branch: it's growing from 2 stalks. so my biggest is at 5 leaf count: 2 old 2 new and a new leaf opening. and i have another 6-8 weeks, so hoping for more to come. the thick cluster on the left is 3 tubers: 1 3yr old sprout, 1 branched and one single. the one on the right is the strongest 5 leafer. New Record - 42 min on mower belt before breaking

Thanks for all the input. In to answer some questions that have been posed I will go into a little more history. I bought the tractor used in 2008. I had no problems until spring of 2010 when I was mowing grass that was about a foot high and the belt broke. The dealer thought the high grass not fully discharging built up until it broke the belt. He replaced it with the non spec belt because he said it fit better on my tractor. That belt lasted about 4 hours of mowing and broke when I was mowing normal height grass. I looked up the specs and got him to put on the correct belt which lasted about 2 hours of mowing and broke in the spring of 2011. As I recall the dealer found the pulley on top of the spindle had some bad bearings and replace the pulley and the spindle and the belt, but because of the drought I did very little mowing over the summer - maybe one in half or two hours. In November, 2011, as I was doing the last mowing for the year the belt broke. The dealer went through the system said he could find nothing wrong and replaced the belt. I completed the mowing and started keeping a record of how long I actually mowed. So in November I mowed 32 min on the belt and then when I went to do my first mowing of the year I mowed 10 min before it broke. Again the dealer has replaced it and found nothing wrong. He and I mowed an area next to the dealer and he observed my technique and the tractor performed flawlessly. I brought it home and completed the first mowing, so I have a little over an hour on this belt. I have my fingers crossed. Based on what I can see in the Cub literature I tend to think the twist does not matter on this mower. From what has been said here, about the only thing that would roll the belt is it catching on something or the tension on the spring being too light. Am I correct?

Bill- not surprised at your psycho :). Did you check out the weather for the following week??? It's not going to stop blooming any time soon. That's great!! Gotta stop by and pay a visit this spring if I may :-)

Thanks Mike and Rox. Chuy, you are always welcome- always great to see you. Usually spring is not too great with the late starts in So. Cal but who knows what will happen this year.

Hi Bill!

This is news that made me smile this morning!! It just doesn't surprise me if Psycho doesnt even blink for winter! This tree has a mind of its own and just wants to grow like there is no tomorrow!!!

You all have had a mild winter while we in the east, have had more snow and frigid temps then ever before. Just last night I was walking like a penguin to keep from falling up north. It's awful... But I know your flip flops are getting plenty of use, while our snow boots are the preferred choice!

I can't wait for warm weather. I'm so cold!!!!!

So I guess we would have lost the contest this year on the last bloom ?

Hi Bill, your Psycho is as impressive as always. This warm winter weather has allowed my CA Sunset to keep blooming. It still has most of its leaves, 6 old inflos (two of which are still producing new buds all the time) and 5 new inflos. All the tips are shiny and ready to go.
I figure, if we can't have any rain, we might as well enjoy the sunshine ....

BTW, this plant is about 3 by 3 feet and has only been in the ground for two years.

Feb. 23- 12 flowers blooming` fairly leafed out. One week beyond the previous record and no sign of stopping.

Must be related to my neighbor's "Gardena." It didn't go dormant or stop blooming... Here it is this morning...

Looks like mine. Even though I cut it back significantly, it has tripled the number of blooms with new ones every day. I wonder if it will go all year or what. This is an interesting winter.
