OKC'rs: 50% off Satterlee's Retirement Sale

Just thought some of you might be interested in checking them out. They do have a lot of things that are uncommon in the nursery trade and not the usual stuff. They usually have some nice Japanese Maples, and 50% off those is a bargain for sure.

I'm sorry to learn that they are closing - soon there will be only TLC and the big box stores left. Do you know if they are open tomorrow (Monday, Memorial Day)?

I wonder if this weather had anything to do with it? Seriously, they had run help wanted ads a number of weeks ago and had just finished hiring. When I got the Sluggo a couple weeks ago I ran into a couple of their new staff people.

I really, really, really, really, really hate to see small independent businesses close their doors. I remember Moesels Hort Haven from years ago too. And there was another small nursery over around 23rd and Rockwell or Meridian too.

Satterlee's must be one of the few non-strip mall box businesses remaining on N. May. I dread to see what pops up on that property when they close. I wonder if they own the land the business sits on or not?

Welcome Mike! I'm not sure of the Gardenweb rules but you may get in trouble for linking to your own site. Just wanted to warn you since you're a new member. You are welcome to join in discussions otherwise on Gardenweb though. I know there are many other professionals that do. (I'm not one of them lol) Thanks for answering my question about when the sale ends. Marquest - I'm checking out Santa Rosa also. American Meadows is cheaper with the sale but of course they don't carry the same plants. Looks like Santa Rosa has a pretty big selection. Thanks for the link.

Hi glavinsolo, When you buy your home, do you plan to cash in your MFs in order to achieve a down payment? You don't say what kind they are, but with expected rate of return of 8% I assume that they're equity-based. The expense rate of 0.5% makes me wonder about that, though, as few charge that low. If you plan to liquidate within a couple of years, if the markets go down, you may be an unhappy camper when it comes time to reclaim the investment. On the other hand, if you have the certificates issued, you can take them to a financial institution to use them as collateral for a loan ... ... which will work if your growth rate on the investment is greater than the rate you pay on your mortgage, after allowing for income tax cost and deductibility in each case. That way, you convert that investment from being a short-term one into a longer-term one, which reduces your short-term risk. Be aware, though, that a financial institution will be unwilling to loan you more than 50% (or at most 60%) of the value of the asset. But you carry some risk if you draw near the limit of what they'll allow, for if the value of the asset goes down and slips below double the value of the loan, the lender will want either some cash to reduce the amount of the loan, or some other assets to underwrite the support for the loan. And they'll want it today ... tomorrow at the latest. With regard to the cost of homes, I'm not familiar with the U.S. markets in general, let alone the ones in your area. But some calculate that the tough times in the housing markets are far from over. I think that it would be well for you to carry on some study of what house prices are doing in the area where you prefer to buy. If you buy early, and house prices continue to reduce, you'll be an unhappy camper, then, as well. Mortgage lenders get quite unhappy if the valuation of the house comes rather close to the amount of the mortgage still owing. If the value goes too low, they'll require that you sell it ... at a loss, of course ... ... or they may choose to foreclose, in which case there'd almost surely be more costs if they sell it than if you do. Which could well mean that they'd be notifying you that you owed them the difference between what you owed on the mortgage, plus costs of repossession and sale, less the amount that they sold it for. Not a pleasant scenario. But one that many who accepted those low-rate mortgages a few years ago will be facing. My feeling is that if I wanted to buy a home in the U.S. these days, I'd be keeping my money in my genes (sorry, "jeans") for a while. There are those who claim that I have some frugal chromosomes in my genes, as a matter of fact. As a matter of fact, my daughter is considering buying accomodation in Arizona, these days. Greetings again, folks, And when did you ever see a G I C ... ... produce any growth? The only return that they'll produce ... is produced now ... and taxed now ... at top rate. The stock that I bought 45 years ago for about $4.20 or so was paying about 10 - 12 cents annual dividend ... which was taxed then at low rate, plus for the latest six years at an even lower rate. In June of '07, when I could have sold it for $107.00, it was paying me $3.08 per year, at that even lower tax rate than earlier, and the annual payment increased to $3.48 later that year. Their involvement with the U.S. financial fiasco resulted in the price of the stock sslliding tto $40.00 - but they maintained the dividend at $3.48. The price has recovered to about $75.00 now ... and they recently increased the dividend to $3.60. That current income is taxed at a much lower rate than interest that I might earn. And I haven't had to talk to the income tax people about the increase in value of the asset, during all of those years. I don't have to report to the income tax people until I either sell the stock ... or die ... neither of which I plan to do, this week or next. When I sell the stock, I deduct the $4.20 that I paid from the, e.g. $74.20? proceeds of sale, to produce a capital gain of $70.00 ... and I pay tax at regular rate on half of that amount. But not until I sell, or die - nothing till then. However - if I transfer the stock to a charity, I get a tax-deductible receipt for the full amount - and I pay no income tax on that increase. And didn't pay about 2.5% of the value annually to a management company, as I'd have to with a mutual fund. You figure it: 45 years at 2.5% of the ongoing value of the fund ... comes out to about 112.5%, doesn't it? No wonder few mutual funds grow faster than the segment of the market in which the manager operates! Looks like a good deal, to me. ole joyful

My Retirement is not getting any closer

I guess I am really getting depressed about not being able to retire because for several years I planned to retire this Oct. 31 and now that time is less than 2 weeks away, and I am afraid I will never get to retire. I have worked for 46 years and I want out. I worked hard for 6 years to get my credit cards paid off and they finally are, but I have a whole new set of problems. I am now faced with the prospect of my land not selling if it is not engineered. I will have to do the engineering and I have an estimate for $9,500 from an engineer. The town is putting in a sewer line by that property and I will have to pay for 2 sewer taps that could run anywhere from $3,000 to $6,000 a piece, my car needs $2,000 urgent repairs, my house needs repairs, the roof leakes, the plumbing needs lots of work and I just don't know what to do. I could very easily end up $15,000 in debt, and I just found out that I need another major dental procedure that could cost up to $2,000. There is just no way I can see my way to retire and that is what I want so much.

I got a "reliable" source on the phone right now. She said Mr. Satterly decided to retire from the nursery business. The business was sold intact. Whatever happens now we don't know.

Thanks for the head's up on this one Susan!!!

DH and I went today and boy did we get some good deals. A tropical Hibiscus that's aout 3 ft tall for $15!!!!! WOW!! I think the woman that was helping us was Mrs. Satterlee becuase she kept telling people that she had decided to retire. She said that the final day of business will be Tues or Wed, and then next weekend there will be a public auction for whatever is left.

I think DH is finally getting on board with gardening and plants. It's always been "my thing" but today...OMG I had to hold him back, he found a 6 ft tall ficus, 2 varigated boxwoods, some ivy, 2 clay containers, and a big red tropical thing that I can't remember the name of... He definately has an eye for the tropicals, which is fine, maybe he won't complain so much this year when he's having to carry them all inside after it starts getting cooler out. LOL!!

Well, what do you know? Gardening fever? Did he catch it from you? Likes tropicals, does he?? Maybe y'all should shart planning a small greenhouse right now so you can winter over all those tropicals outside of the house. lol

I have fond memories of Moesels Hort Haven. I saw Rod's mother this morning at American Plant Products. She was out front weeding some of the container plants and noticed me coming up to the door. I was shocked she remembered me.

She and her husband were very generous with their knowledge and expertise. I bet I followed him around the greenhouse one day for hours getting introduced to some rare "at the time" tropicals they grew.

A lot of people were at Satterlee's last weekend. Nothing going on this week except for the sign. Auction is tomorrow, Sunday, at 1:00 PM. Pass it on if you know anyone interested.
