Andy, i really don't know where you can buy them but try going to tms growers you can find their store on ebay. I have purchased from them before and they seem to come in great condition and they are in perfect health. I am looking to plant some in the spring also.......... i thought that you might be moving?

I am re-thinking moving. At leaset for a couple of years. I'm single so even though my house is only 1100 square feet it's plenty big for me. In addition I have a very manageable mortgage payment and am paying it off in less than 20 years. Plus I'm able to pay additional money on my principal. By the way how is your coconut doing? I just notices a new spear coming out the other night. if you have not seen a lot of growth I would not worry. You have a "dwarf" variety which grows a little slower. In addition mine was outside all summer and then moved inside. it did not have to go through the shock of shipping and being replanted in the cold as yours did. I ordered three Musa Basjoo banana plants today. I will get them next week. From the research I've done I believe they will be ok until spring. In fact I will get a head start on them and may be able to get them to bud next summer.

My coconut seems to be doing good...i haven't seen any significant growth yet but i am starting to see a new frond forming in the center. At this point it is still getting green. It is about 70% green and the fronds are about 70% open again. I think the shock part is probably over it is just getting itself to where it was before it was shipped. Where did you order the bananas? on ebay? Also can you cut them down in the fall and have them grow back in the spring with or without protection, because i would like to get some. I have seen some places on ebay saying that they have some seeds that can produce fruit in one summer because they are mature seeds or something to that effect.

travel south, i just got back from atlanta and got 2 7gal needle palms from homedepot for 30 bucks. in my experiance the only way to get large hardy-tropicals is to go south and get them. even as close as southern ohio.

I'm looking for the same thing. I have seen larger needles on e-bay occasionally, keep checking, but I hope to outbid you if that happens..LOL. I'm having my parents pick me up a 3gal needle for $50 at Alligator Alley in OKC on a cross country trip. They ship 1 gal for $25, but 3 gal is pick up only.

Actually it would be helpful if anybody knows of better deals along the way. The route is I-40 from Vegas to OKC, I-44 to St.Louis to I-70 back to Pittsburgh.

AHHHH Pittsburgh. I live in Topeka, Kansas but visit McKeesport every other year or so.
I like Pittsburgh a lot. Friendly small town type folks in a big city.
One problem thou, the family I visit was jokeing about how the "McDonald's" in McKeesport was ranked the worst "McDonald's" in the country by a magazine. I HAD to try it out. And, well, yes, they totally screwed up my order LOLOLOLOL. I never have doubted my friend since.

I noticed you mentioned McKeesport in another post, and wondered about that. I live about 10 minutes (North Huntingdon) from there but know it inside out and backwards, it's my territory. I've never visited the McD's since I'm not a fan, but I'm not surprised. We seem to have a lot of 1st's, bests and worsts in this town (North Huntingdon=Pittsburgh, just like everyone from the surrounding 7 counties will tell you they are from the 'Burgh). Hope you're a Steeler fan, otherwise you're just wasting your time. Bad year, but we'll be back, circumstances were bad this year, but AFC Championships every 2.5 years under Cowher ain't bad, not to mention all those Super Bowls. Yes, we are the most rabid fans in all of sports.

I understand there is a Sabal Birmingham in either Topeka or Wichita, are you familiar with that, or am I thinking of a S.minor 'McCurtain' that set seed.

I'm looking for the same thing. I'm in Cincinnati(SW Ohio). I've see them on Ebay but I'm looking for 3gal or larger...Was thinking about a drive to Atlanta or the Carolina coast for some palms...I have been looking around on the net for a nursery in Atlanta or someplace on I-75. Hadn't thought about a Home Depot. I once brought home some cavendish bananas from a Home Depot in Miami - also put one in a suitcase one time and flew it home ...lol. These days bananas are pretty easy to find around here. Tim23 mentioned a drive to southern Ohio to buy palms. Any idea who sells them?

Well this one got dug up from the archives (lol). I appreciate all of the recent suggestions. I did end up getting two excellent needles last Spring. They were about close to two feet tall. This ice storm we had a few days ago was pretty ruff on them. I hope it recovers this summer. I just wish it had been snow.

I know the feeling were due for freezing rain this weekend !

If a bunch of you people want something like this, it is better to find someone in Florida that will ship after the weather warms up. The Florida based "Plantfinder" has their own website with listings of plants, then all you need is someone who would ship them up. US mail allows up to 108 inches for the dimesions of boxes so you can get good sized plants shipped for a not so bad price compared to what it would cost to buy them in a nursery up north. Someone could probably ship 3 or 4, 7 gallon needle palms with the soil taken off for about $35 plus the cost of the plants. I keep my hard copy right next to my computer, I am seeing about 5 people with 7 gallons that are around 24 inches, and prices are about $45 each, wholesale for Rh.

andyandy, ut is the same old story. we can't get good size plants up north. If I lived in the south, i would start a little business of picking up needles at local gardening centers, and shipping them up to us northern zone deniers.

I second the vote for Nearly Native based in North Carolina. Great palms, decent prices and they don't have absurdly high minimum orders. The palms that I ordered from them only a few years are MASSIVE already! Only you might have to wait until spring as they seem to be heavily sold out until spring.
