Where to get Cheap big planter boxes in s.e.PA?

Hello,

I live in Downingtown, PA (s.e.PA) close to lancaster/amish country side. Where can I get nice, big,long planter boxes that I can put in my big deck for my townhome? Where can I get these for the cheapest price?

I got boxes for free from a fish market. Big Styrofoam boxes that salmon and other fish are shipped in. I rinse them out, punch holes in the bottom, fill them with sterile soil, and plant them with lettuce and greens. I lost all my spinach and lettuce to critters last year, so I am trying to grow it in boxes up off the ground.

They are not beautiful, but they are functional. If you cover them with clear plastic in late winter and early spring, they are like little hothouses - you can sow things early. I have lettuce, spinach, and mustard greens underway.

Otherwise, I am not sure what to tell you. I am freakishly frugal and I never shop retail. I love recycled containers and things I find at yard sales and auctions.

Have you checked out the Hypertufa forum? It shows how to make your own planters out of cement, sand and peat. I don't know if you have an area at your place where you could do this but if you do, then you can make the planters any size you want.
Or you could try Freecycle, someone may be getting rid of exactly what you want.

I found some 2x4s laying around, if you don't have any you can get the stud grade I have them at Lowe's for $1.57 for the 2x4 x96 studs. I used about five, if I count my scrap. Then I used a peace of 15/32 inch plywood at 2FT x 4FT as the bottem. I ran a 4FT peace of 2X4 on one side, and four 18 inch peaces on the ends standing up right with supporting 2x4 peaces forming a box at the top and bottem of my up right peaces. Make sure the supporting peaces are on the outside, as you will need them later. My only question, of witch I have not tested, as I still have nails to cut off before doing this, is I atached screening to the short ends as I was reading that a open air coop is better then a dark dank closed up coop. I then took some old barn wood from a barn we took down next dore, and used it for the back as I didn't have any more plywoodI then started running out of scroos, hints the nails that I have to cut off, my framing gun only had really long nails in it at the time. I plan to add a hinged top as I am thinking of cutting an opening in the coop wall, and ataching the box over it on the outside so that the Hens can go in and out at will. I spent in all $20 on my coop and nesting box. I had the deck scroos and the 15/32 plywood left over from building the dog houses, and the 1/4 sheets were removed from the walls of the house when we took out the old bathroom. This is why I tell people not to get rid of things that you might use later. if anyone has a good idea about the screened sides, Please let me know if I should close them up. On the coop, I am installing a screen dore on the south side, that can close at night, but open in the day time to let the hens out to the yard.

Take some rocks out and trade them for some good compost. Dig a bigger hole and amend the soil in the hole well, to give the tree a good start (I know that is contrary to some current thinking - but has served me well) and the tree will find it's way into the other soils around the hole. You won't keep a healthy plant down. I sympathize with the digging issue, but building and maintaining a wood planting box is also a lot of work. Put a gopher basket in the larger hole, if need be. Better yet, get some gopher traps and become real religious about cathching your gophers. The other secret to gopher elimination, it to tear up their tunnels after you catch them. This keeps the next gopher from re-inhabiting an existing tunnel. It is a little extra work, but absolutely worth it. Offer to trap in your neighbors' yards, before they get to yours. Mine have been trained to call whenever they see a mound. (Regardless of your political persuasion - it is better to fight them over there, than on the home turf.) First year I trapped 100+ gophers on my lot. Now if I see one or two, it is a busy year. Only had a half a dozen in the neighbors yards even. Again, you have to be religious about it.

Unique planter box instead of lanai

sierraeast - The views are somewhat subjective. The city/ocean view is on the west side of the property. The east, south and north sides have OK views, but nothing dramatic. The units already have lanais on the living floor not to mention an accessible rooftop deck. In a condo setting where people have no access to exterior living areas, I agree... a lanai would be preferred so people have some place to be outside while in or around their home. But in this case, people have a couple options to enjoy a little outdoor living. Also, the traffic noise can be loud during some times of the day and evening so I wouldn't think people would want to stand outside the lanai, especially in a bedroom. Believe it or not, most condo owners in Hawaii have their lanais enclosed if the governing association allows it. I guess if people want to be outside, they just go down the street to the beach : ) lorraineal - yes, I thought about that. I would think that people would clean the area as they would any other interior plant collection. From a cleaning perspective, having this exterior planter is no different than having a few plants inside your home. You have to pick up the leaves every now and then but in an exterior setting, this can be done less frequently than if the plants were indoors. The plants will be mostly accessible from a sliding door (center sliding door, similar to a french door so 50% of the area is accessible directly from the edge. The area is not large - only 26" deep, so it should be fairly easy to reach/maintain. I was hoping to get a few thumbs up... so perhaps my idea is baked.

What ajiajs says. If you are looking for them for a good price, you likely won't find them any cheaper than from now until about Thanksgiving. Most likely, you will find them by visiting the stores however. They probably won't advertise them specifically. Some stores just mark down all their garden center stuff a certain percentage, but other just mark individual items down... Visiting the stores is the best way to get in on those kind of deals. Walmart, Home Depot, Menards, Lowes, Target, Big Lots, Shopko, farm and fleet stores, etc....

No I just wanna buy couple of those nice but simple wood planters , not too fancy....I'll probably make mine next year ...too many hobbies this year ...I also fly rc planes:)

Anyone knows such an cheap amish kinda place?

Well, I'm driving to Amish country t'row to eat some dutch country buffet! Then shop for plants and Cheap planters. I had my deck built by an amish guy who was very honest- he built it for cheap price...so I might call him.

I built my planters our of culled pressure treated wood from Home Depot's 50 cent rack. I cut the wood with a power saw and screwed the pieces together, with deck screws and a power drill. It was a fast, easy, and cheap project.
