Foxtail Palm

I have a foxtail palm that I planted in Nov. 2007 (my second mistake) first mistake was buying one in my zone... Anyway, it had two trunks, one did well. The other not so good. I noticed that it never produced a new leaf spike, then the trunk just below the top of the tree started to bulge, finally got a good look and noticed that the new frond was trying to open in the trunk!!! It is showing about 2in from the top. What can I do about this? I was thinking that I could split the top of the trunk to allow the pressure to be released but I thought that I better ask here first.

The second smaller trunk has a new spike starting to show, other than some cold damage on the leaves it is doing fine.

Any help would be great.

You can cut off right above the crownshaft and it might correct it self. It will take a year to get back to normal looking.

Be careful, make sure it is not a flower spike first. I believe the foxtail flowers similar to how the royals flower and that is from the bulging crownshaft area. If this is the case, don't cut the palm at all!!!

I live in South Texas (Brownsville TX).I just bought 7 foxtail 6 of them about 6 feet tall and 1 of them about 15 to 20 foot tall.The 6 feet tall are looking good but they do have the end of the tips like burn but the rest of them are green.I also planted two bottled palms about 9 feet tall they also look good but the tips look yellow.They were all planted about a week ago.I water them every day is that good? I live in a zone 9 or 10 very tropical weather 60s to 80s in the winter months. please help me as I get educated in this field.

Two things come to mind...it was grown under some shade by the grower and than you bought it and its simply burned in hot direct sun..OR..whatever watering you are doing isn't near enough. Especially for something newly planted. Keep it well watered,increase the amount or more often or both, is the cure to both scenarios. One more..the crownshaft still looks good..no burn. So,nothing has gone on too far..it can recover.
