Is it too early to plant a windmill in zone 7 ??

I have the opportunity to purchase 2 Windmills that have about 3-1/2 to 4 feet of trunk for 200.00 each and 2 windmills that have about 2 to 2-1/2 feet of trunk for 150.00 each. They have been at a nursery sitting in large pots for a about a year. The pots appear to be 30 or 45 gallon. The smaller ones appear to be flourishing. (Fronds everywhere) The larger ones seen to only have 4-5 fronds but new spears are emerging from the top. My question is two fold A) Is this a good deal ?? and B). Can I plant them now in zone 7. The weather here has been 25-35 in the mornings and 45-55 in the afternoons on average. C) Does anyone have any advice on how to plan them ie.. soil, watering etc..... As usual; any help would be appreciated !!!!!

I wouldn't plant anything at this time of the year, I'd buy them and just keep them in their pots till april. They may need some protection if they're in pots though on really cold nights.

Can't comment on the price as I'm from England, although that is pretty expensive compared to what we can get them for over here.

You want to talk expensive? Try $1,000 to $1,200 for a Trachy with less than 3' of trunk!!! and that's Canadian dollars! Too rich for my blood. At a couple of hundred bucks, I'd buy a couple of them.

If one of them has already sprouted in the refrigerator, it's probably ok to plant it now, although it might grow really soon. But I'd hold off planting the others until December. On the other hand, you might want to check with a plant shop in your area more familiar with your warm climate.

orchard17: Great looking is not the whole story on strawberry plants. Give yourself the chance to choose plants from a wider selection, based on the adaptability of variety to your climate, whether they are Junebearing/everbearing etc. Nurseries and bigbox stores do have some pretty plants at this time of year but, as you have noted, it is too early for fully leafed, blooming plants. Like Kniles, I favor bareroot plants, and Nourse is an excellent source with a great selection. Order them in, and you will be able to plant now. You won't lose much, if any time, and will probably be much more satisfied with your choice in the long pull. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA

I'm in southern Plymouth, MA, on the coast just 5 miles north of the Cape Cod Canal. Some of my yard is probably zone 7a, other parts are probably zone 6b (nasty winter winds often with minimal snow cover). I've started to cover two shrubs because of some nights below freezing even though there are warmish daytime temperatures. As Ken pointed out, it's important to get stakes in the ground before the ground freezes (it does freeze here too, just not so deep). They're forecasting a hard freeze tonight. The two shrubs are a variegated hydrangea and a Hopi crape myrtle. The hydrangea sometimes, but rarely, blooms but usually dies to the ground if not protected. The crape myrtle is marginal, It's not in an optimal location but I didn't have much choice because of the nasty winter winds. Both of these shrubs (the crape myrtle is really a small tree) leaf out beautifully in the spring when they've been covered over the winter. Yes, I agree with blondeboy that's a pretty good deal....
but don't plant them until the ground warms a little it's just too cold now !

How should I protect them?? I've heard of the christmas light thing but am not sure. Should i sit them in the sun or next to my home? Can I keep them in my garage for two months or so ? Will placing a platic bag over the fronds hurt them ?? Thanks !!!

garland, depends partly on your latitude. If you have a south exposure next to house and out of the wind, they should be ok. On cold nights, you can cover them with cotton sheets, burlap, or even the light weight mesh from HomeDepot that is often used to snuff out weeds in the summer. uncover them in the morning after the sun is up. Plastic is not a good idea. Good luck. dl

The easiest thing to do is keep them in the garage, and plant them in March or April. I've been overwintering palms in my garage for years.

If I keep them in the garage, should I put special lighting or something over them or do they need any natural light at all for the next two months. I'll plant them on April 1st. (Two months away ) The temps here in conyers, georgia should be great by then.

I planted 5 windmills and 1 mexican in december here in Marietta, the windmills were 5 gallon from Pikes and seem ok but one of the mexican fronds looks a bit droopy. I'm gonna pick up 2 more windmills tommorow but hold off a bit until we get to the 60's.
