Orchid Society Meeting Photos

Almost summer here in upside down land.

Benched as Unknown, but it almost certainly has Rhinerrhiza divitiflora as one ancestor. Which is a gorgeous orchid but the common name "One day orchid" says it all.

Every orchid society has a genius grower, anyone who can grow a Masdevallia here is a genius.

I know that Black orchids are much sought after. Here is an almost black Cymbidium which was difficult to photograph in a dimly lit hall.

Nice photos! I used to work for a nursery that sold a nice variety of orchids. It is always a pleasure to see different ones.

Fabulous pictures. Now i want a Dendrobium Aussie Green Gold. Maybe i will see some during the winter show season. Did the owner of the Dendrobium thyrsiflorum that coyld ranslate to zone 5? I just acquired one of these.

I was surprised at the local variety, but also surprised at the lack of miltonias and oncidium types. There was just one Onc that I saw (and I took it's pic). Maybe they grow them and all are summer flowerers ? I did see a Howeara (didn't photograph though).

Photographed in dim church hall light and the wall colour behind doesn't help. Plant of the night at another Society meeting on the same blooming and I have found it on other society results listings. Thanks for the comments and the single blooms do look a bit like impatiens.

Den. Yukidaruma registered by Yamamoto in 1973. Still good after all the years. re. the Cymbidiums some do not have the summer upper limit of 20C at night and will bloom in warmer climates. Cymbidium Golden Elf is one. Still, if you you are in Florida there must be some orchids that are easy there and almost impossible in NY.

Tried to grow some of those "New Guinea" Dendrobium Hybrids and failed. Have never had much success with those " thyrsiflorum type Dendrobiums" either, as for Colmanara Masai Red....a complete mystery. It is the only Colmanara left on the Hybrid register. I've seen plants with various colour variations over the years, all lovely so they are around.

Beautiful pictures. I love cyms but they don"t do great in FL. One of my society members put his in a refrigerator for a few months during winter so he can get them to bloom, don"t have an extra refrigerator at my house.
