The Rain Has Arrived!

We've had some light rain and a couple of minutes of heavier rain, but no significant amounts of rainfall yet. More is coming our way--I can see the lightning (lots of it!) and hear the thunder.

At least the firefighters who've been out in NW Love County all day long again were able to radio in and say that rain was pouring down on their fire, they were clearing the scene and going home. Hooray for them. Maybe they can get some much-needed rest.

The rain that came through here didn't have hail in it, but these storms have a history of producing hail.

Well, hallelujah! Dawn got rain. ;)

I am so glad for you. Presently (9:50 PM) it is thundering south of me.

Wow, the weather men are saying you might get 2 inches.

Darn, I wished I had got more seeds scattered today. I was too busy dyeing Easter Eggs with the borrowed children ;)

OK, I'm keeping my eyes on the weather report and panicking.... Looks like there's to be no soon stop to the rain. It actually hasn't rained much today, but the soil is way too muddy. My best guess is to try to put them in some soil in pots for the time being? The roots are soaking in water right now, and I will put them in the few free pots I have. Does anyone have any advice where I should then keep them for the next few days? Somewhere shady?

We're still waiting for a good rain. I live near a lake that is 14 feet below normal. Due to safety concerns, all the boat ramps ( but one) have been closed for months and the one remaining open is scheduled to be closed in a week. I'd love to have a week of nothing but a slow, soaking rain. Send some our way. :-) Marilyn

Maryl - There haven't been any car wrecks, but a lot of people stop, roll down their window and shout to me about how much they love looking at the daylilies every year. We get a lot more dog walkers going by when the garden is in bloom, and I've gotten so many compliments from them. One lady says her dog likes the daylilies, and seems drawn to the yellow ones. One man even got out of the car and came up and knocked on the door. He and his wife grow daylilies in the next county. He said he wanted to meet me and find out the name of one he'd love to have. It turned out the one he was in love with was my seedling, the bronze UF. I told him it would be a few years on that one. My grass is mostly Bermuda grass, but in the front some Contractor's mix has grown, and on the side I have a lot of tall fescue. Ours started about 2 yesterday and we have received just less than half and inch. Been a fairly steady light drizzle with a light rain mixed in at times. Slow and going in. Just hope we get at least another half an inch. The heavier rains were just east of us. One of our company locations 60 miles east of us got hit my lightning and that isn't good on electronics so they were down. We missed the lightning and hail. Glad Dawn got some much needed rain the firefighters got to go home. Hopefully they will get a good soaking. Hope everyone can enjoy Easter somewhere. Know it will be hard for those without a home. Jay

Good Morning, Y'all,

Not only did we get rain, it has come in waves so now we are getting more.

Last night's initial band of storms only brought us about a quarter-inch. The second band brought very small hail briefly and yet more rain. At that point, the 3 local volunteer fire departments that were still out at the fires radioed in that it was "pouring down" out there at the fire scene and that they and the BIA firefighters were clearing.

Recurring bands of rain throughout the night brought some heavier rain. This morning it is back to very light, but we've had two inches since about 8 p.m. Saturday.

Our worst weather of the weekend is yet to come. This afternoon and this evening, our forecast includes winds up to 60-65 miles per hour, possibly severe thunderstorms and hail up to the size of half-dollars. I hope it rains all day but we could do without the wind and the hail.

If I had known that setting out tomato transplants would make it rain, I'd have planted two weeks ago. I haven't been out to look at the plants I set out yesterday, but I bet they took a pounding.

Rain is good, and the more the merrier.

After the 2005-2006 drought, we thought the empty creeks and ponds would never refill. Then, on April 28, 2006, we had 9.25" of rain, and 8" of that fell in 4 hours so we actually had flash flooding. We had a few rough hours where the emergency personnel had to close down roads and rescue people from submerged vehicles, but the ponds filled up quickly. I wouldn't mind having a big storm like that come along now and refill the ponds, especially for the sake of the ranchers and their cattle.

Two inches may help the cracks in the ground start closing up but, based on past experience, it will take another 3 to 4 inches at least to make the cracks disappear.

Since the weather is "nice" in the sense that we don't have to worry about the place burning down today, I think we are going to go out for lunch and then go shopping. We have been afraid to leave the house all winter for fear a fast-moving wildfire would sweep across our end of the county and get it, so it is nice to have a day where fire danger is low to non-existent.

Last night, though, our fire dept. was paged out to a power pole/transformer on fire (in the rain!) alongside Hwy. 77 and they had to stay there a long time waiting for OG&E personnel to come fix the transformer. Seems like it is always something.

Well, we tried to get out of the house and do something, but were so tired we just picked up a bucket of chicken and stopped at Wal-Mart to get rawhide chew bones for the poor spoiled dogs to chew on while they lay around the house and stay out of the rain and then came home.

It is still raining here but just in light, misty bands.

Maybe tomorrow we'll have the energy back to actually do something. Fire danger looks low at least through mid-week, so maybe we can get back to our normal routines for a while.
