Cyp. reginae

Just goes to show how slow I am in posting. This Cyp. started blooming in our garden about 2 months ago. See the bud on the left?

Also have a Cyp. parviflorum, but it didn't bloom this year. Hard winter-too little snow. I'm surprised the reginae bloomed.

Gorgeous photo!!

I bought nine of them in January and think that most have lived.
I can't wait for the bloomin' to start, although I think it will be a while.
My others bloomed in May and get bigger every year.

How long have you had these and how are you growing them?
Mine seen to be o.k., but I always like input from good growers. :~)
I assume that your soil is good for them from the start, but you likely amend it with other things.

Brandon, I've re-read your post. I have Cyp reginae (sp?) seedlings if you're interested. My primary interests are ctsms (includes cycs and morms), phrags, stans, paphs. Pretty much in that order. Will also trade for other green stuff ;) LMK, Carolyn

FABULATASTIC ROSS!!!! That is way cool! Hope you keep a photo journal on its progress! As far as acaule is concerned I think if the mix is free draining that watering every day with the acidified distilled would do the trick. Of course I am using a mixed wood based media and I think that I may try and bag up some and get it wet so that it rots in the bag and see if that might work if it retains its free draining qualities or even if its pH works out to 4.5 or thereabouts. Of course there is always the possibility of growing it in a live sphagnum bog-it is just that I cannot fit my bog in a bucket into my refrigerator during winter!!!!!! Maybe I should invest in an ice machine!!!

Hi Twiz, You since you mention a 3 ft trail at this spot with the Cyps on the side, could you put a wire cage around/over the plants? This would prevent trampling and pose as an obsticle for path widening. 3ft seems wide enough. Some people use tall chickenwire, & some use thicker cage material, though I'm not sure what. As for laws, as long as they are on your property, you can do anything you like to them... Not that I'm saying go put them in the compost bin, but legally you can. Ethically, it's best to leave them since they seem to like it where they are. As for propagation, they do form new growths if happy enough. cf the link below. They also produce seed, though this species seems to produce seed an average of 10-20% of the time it flowers. Artificial pollination bumps this up to 80-90%. The seeds are the size of a grain of sand and germinate in nature very slowly. It may take 2-5yrs before they show signs of their first leaves, and 6-15yrs (purportedly) to flower. Artificially, we can do better in vitro with seedlings in 1 to 2 yrs and flowering in 3-7yrs. Best, Ross Here is a link that might be useful:

Mark, I've had these Cyps. for about 5 years. They are planted near our house, south east corner, sheltered, and also growing near hot water pipes! They bloomed the year after they were planted, then last year, no bloom; in fact, I don't recall either of them coming up! This was due to under-watering on my part-too much attention to my indoor 'chids!

Anyway, I did water the places they were marked at, and you see the result this year. The Cyp. parviflorum's leaves appeared, but no blooms.

I'm taking better care of them this year, and watering and fertilizing them quite regularly, usually using a fish fertilizer. The soil is quite rich, and had been amended with well-rotted horse manure.

This year, I'm taking extra care in mulching them!
