Too late for pre-emergent.?

Hey guys,

Usually I put down the Gardens Alive pre-emergent/fertilizer in very early April. And I have to say since I have been using it, it has been a pretty good product.

This season we had that last week where we hit around 65-70 for a few days. I am just worried that some weeds have sprouted already. My main question is: Can I put this down, even if they say we may have some snow next week and temps are going cooler for a week or two? From what I remember, organic product can go down at any time, but I just want to hear your views on it. Would I be better off waiting after the small cooling period?

I watch a lot of forums and they are telling me that now is good for your area. Some weeds may slip by but you're most interested in crabgrass. Go now!!

The forsythia for us started blooming early this week and the grass started greening up around the same time. These last few weeks of warm weather has things moving a little earlier this year. Since you're a little cooler than us, I'd say you're alright with your pre-emergent timing.

I doubt it. Crabgrass seeds germinate when the soil has been 50 degrees or warmer for 3 straight days. You will want to apply crab grass preventer right before then. Keep in mind that the soil temperature is cooler than the air temperature.

Fixing years of neglect...where to start?

Ultimately we will add a swing set and a shed/garage to the space and fence it in. Shed is first priority, fence/swing set will come as funds allow. The area inside the fence will need to be fairly hardy due to 2 Labrador Retrievers. Outside of the fence will be just for looks. The more I think the more I realize that the bulk of the work will have to wait till fall. I am thinking that I should probably aerate now, and apply some sort of weed killer to try and keep the weed growth down, then simply mow the grass fairly frequently but at my mowers highest setting for the rest of the spring/summer. Then come fall it will be dethatch/aerate/overseed. There is not enough grass out there to fill in the spots that would be left after a good dethatch to keep things solid.

I didn't notice it was CGM. I agree with TW on that. I used 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet 8 times last season and never noticed a difference in weeds. I mean, how much do you have to use to get the effect? I was doing it to fertilize anyway. It is the best organic fertilizer I know of.

I hoping all this rain doesn't totally negate the effects of this...I put it down Thurs....

I put mine down a week ago and it's rained pretty much every day since. I suspect I've wasted the application, and the stuff wasn't cheap for me either.

No, no, no. Definitely not too late. Actually, if anything it was a little too early. The old wives tale about the forsythia is actually pretty accurate. If the Forsythia is in bloom it's time to put down the pre-emergent. If all the yellow leaves have dropped...its too late. It's all about soil temps and you have plenty of time.

Yeah, FB....I followed that and put it down when they started to bloom....Even a few days to week after. They stay blooming for another 3 weeks or so.

Also, I still see some remains in the grass, so that is good news at least.

bgtimber75, don't worry. Organic materials don't leach through the soil like chemicals do. Organic materials must be digested by microbes to become effective. Unless yours floated away, it's still good to go.
