I know it's not a hosta but...........

Asibile.

I am trying to decide (yes I know it is not spring yet) which one to get. I was never really fond of Asibile before but it seems to be one of a very few flower options I have for my shade garden that has a flashy color.

Now for the questions. Does anyone grow it with their hostas? Which one can tolerate the most shade-astilbe Burgundy Red, Fanal, Glow, or Montgomery?(I really like the Mongomery.)

I have astilbe growing in with my hostas. My experience with them is that they prefer moist soil and at least partial sun, so they do not work well in my deep shade areas. The astilbe I have that receive about 6 hours of sun a day, grow much bigger and produce much better flowers than the ones I put in shadier areas of my garden.

That being said, I'm sure others will have opinions and other experience with them, so I hope others will chime in:)

I too have several colors/types in among my hosta. They seem to like the same amount of water the hosta do so they do well for me. I doubt many of mine get 6 hours of sun light. I have never thought about it,however. 6 hours is the minimum for perennial sun loving plants,I was told. I am thinking that would be too much for astilbe.

Here's a tip for next year.... I have done this with a lot of success in the past. I would recommend learning on something easily replaced though, just in case. I usually have 1 or 2 in black nursery pots when the fall is closing in and getting them in their permanent homes is questionable. I dig them into a spot in my "holding bed" so the soil levels are about even and cover them with chopped leaves for the winter. About now (I jsut did it yesterday) I go out and brush off the leaves, rinse off the pot and put it in my unheated sunroom. they will be sprouting in just a couple of weeks and leafed out well before the garden ones are. Not a perfect solution, but it keeps me from getting nuts. OR... just get some seeds from the Hallsons seed page and start your own babies! Nothing like watching brand new plants emerge! Alexa

If you had the flu, you would know it. It hits you hard and takes you down. I had the flu once, when I was in my thirties, and was in the hospital for a week. No doubting what I had. And I am healthy as a horse. Hope your cold goes away soon.

I use several long lengths of white fabric and then the snow. First length is to cover the table surface so no matter what you see there's a white base on the surface. Then I place the houses and any other large pieces that might go with the "village" where I want them on top of this first layer. Next length gets draped so I have little hills and valleys. You're making snow mounds.It takes some fussing to get it to look good but it's worth it. Then IF I feel like it or still feel I need it I will dig out the "snow" and do with it the same thing I just did with the second layer. Make little mounds, go over what I did with the fabric but not to heavy. Let some of the fabric show thru here and there. The thing to remember is you are trying to make it look like a snowy landscape. The hills should in most cases not be too high you want to be able to see your houses. It's really a matter of playing with it. I know some years I can put the thing together the first try thru others I look at it and think "WHY AM I doing this to myself". If for some reason you want your houses up higher or at varying heights you can slide a inverted bowl under the bottom layer of fabric and place the houses on the bowls. Don't use books they unless the pieces are very large cause the corners will show thru.

I have always had trouble growing Astilbe and it just dawned on me that I have been trying to grow them under a maple tree. Here's a picture I took on a garden tour. The garden met all the light requirements noted above. The Astilbe is lovely:

Hosta and astilbe

You can't see the hostas from this angle, they're around the bend to the right of these astilbes.

I moved the whole astilbe patch in this bed to the back of the border last summer, when I dug out the thug lilies to make room for more hostas.

Thanks! I changed it a lot last summer, so it won't look good for a while, until my baby hostas grow up. I'd totally had it with the doggone day lilies. I plan to fill in the empty spaces with coleus, (maybe not if coleus attract the deer).

The Astilbe will be happier at the back of the border nearer the sprinkler head, and will make a pretty backdrop for the hosta.

thank you all very much. All the pictures look great, it makes me feel better about trying to put Astibile in.

I will probBLY go with the Montgomery. I think the pink would have a washed out look against my fence. I will make sure to keep it in the sunnier spots in my back garden.

I always thought it was pronounced Ass-Ta-beel I guess I was wrong :)
