OT where to stay near norman

I really don't know anything about the Norman area but I thought since it is 4 hours from here I might stay in a hotel over that way.
Can y'all recommend a decent hotel in the area, even OKC?

Kim - I'll look at someplaces on my way home from work today. Although I live rural NE Norman....I work out at the FAA which is west of the airport so I drive by lots of places. I'll shoot you an e-mail to give you a few options.

Thank you so much. I stayed somewhere over there last year but have no idea where. I didn't want to book online and risk being I a difficult area since I am traveling alone.

Mike, I agree. I don't know what we'd do without them. This weekend, when I watched footage on the news of the Bastrop-Smithville, TX area wildfire where around 30 homes, a dozen or more businesses, and a couple of dozen outbuildings were lost, my heart just broke for those who lost everything they owned. I still am in awe of the fact that our firefighters kept the Love County fire from burning homes. (A couple of barns were lost.) The firefighters literally raced from one home to the next, arriving just in time to keep the homes from burning. Even though the homes were saved, many people lost cattle grazing lands, fruit trees, shade trees, garden areas, home landscaping, outbuildings, etc. However, I know they feel so fortunate to still have their homes. I also still am in awe of the fact that firefighters came from Purcell, Norman and all kinds of fire depts. in those areas. The fact that volunteers would come so far to help us brought many people to the point of tears. I don't think those firefighters will ever know how deeply touched we Love Countians were by their response to our local emergency. We've had several grass fires since then and undoubtedly will have more this fire season, but that was the worst one most people here have ever seen--including several professional firefighters who have 20, 30 or more years' firefighting experience. One retired professional firefighter (33 years of professional service, and is still a volunteer many years after retirement) told me he personally observed "fire tornadoes" he estimated at 100' tall within the burning area. I can't even imagine what that would be like. We are grateful that the fire was stopped and homes were not lost--in fact, the word "grateful" doesn't seem big enough for how thankful we are. It takes a special breed of person to put their life on the line to fight wildfires and we're so fortunate to have folks who are willing to do that. Dawn

I am glad y'all survived. Part of Kansas has or has had a PDS (Particularly Dangerous Situation) Tornado Warning or Warnings already today and one comment on Dr. M's blog at wunderground mentioned that NE OK better be watching because their area is right for storm development like what is occurring in Kansas. I have no idea if the person making that comment knows what he or she is talking about though. I bet you got oodles of rain. My rainfall total practically never is the same as my mesonet station's, but often is close to our NWS Co-op Oberserver's totals because he's just a couple of miles NW of us. The heat is one reason I didn't cover up very much yet. With sunlight, which is rare so far today but still likely to make its way through the clouds now and then, I was afraid anything under buckets or sheet plastic would heat up. Around 3 o'clock I might start covering up stuff. I need to go outside and gather up lawn furniture and squeeze it into the garage or potting shed. Y'all don't need any sunlight there. It will just heat up the atmosphere and increase instability. Make that sunshine go away! You know how it works. If I cover up stuff, no hail will fall. If I don't cover up stuff, we'll be slammed by hail. So, apparently covering up plants prevents hail and I'd better do it. I hate covering up and uncovering stuff and have mostly avoided it this year. I guess there's days you just have to do it. I always tell Tim if he'd just build me a Bio-Dome type covering over my garden, I could ignore the weather and not have to cover up plants. I guess I'll never talk him into it. I didn't sleep much last night either. No storms were near me, but I was worried about where the storms were, and also about today. I expect less sleep tonight. If I could sleep in the tornado shelter, I'd do it, but I know from experience that I cannot close my eyes and sleep in there because I am sure that a snake or a black widow or a mouse will find me, even though I have thoroughly searched the shelter and none of those are even present in it. I guess I have too many creepy memories of our next-door-neighbor's old storm shelter left over from when I was a kid. It was dark and I think he must have left the door open all the time because it always had creepy crawly things in it.

O/T camping, cabins in or near OK?

Jo, We are do tent as as cabins camping every spring and fall and often in summer. If you are planning only tent cabins, then you may want to explore Buckhorn Campground in Chicksaw National Recreation Area, some of the camp ground are close to lake on high platform, and very privacy in couple of them. Doris campground in Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge will good in spring, but may be now. It will not be crowded and deers roam freely around the tent all the times. If you want to have both tent and cabins then look for the red rock canyon state park, they have nice but small cabins. Turners falls park has cabins as well tent facility, but falls area is very crowded in the long weekend. Never go Turner Falls park in any long weekends. Cabins at Beaverbeds is good, we love the tree house cabins http://www.beaversbendgetaways.com/cabins_treehouse.php Cabins at Smoky Mts are the best cabins we were stayed, but that me be faraway for you. OT--Where can you donate towels too?

Just getting ready to unplug my computer and all it's extras so I haven't read through the responses---my apologies if my suggestion is a repeat. I used to take older towels and blankets to our two Humane Societies. The last time I took a very big black plastic yard bag filled and they apologized but couldn't accept them because they were running out of room to store the donated items. In other words, they had plenty at the time. We have a Day Care for Seniors near our home, about 2 miles as the crow flies. Adults who still have to work but have elder loved ones living with them can use this place daily or weekly. Crafts, music, reading stations, breakfast lunch and a couple snacks daily, even outings ---it's a great place! But being these are seniors and as seniors do, they have all the same accidents as a young child would have. I take my older towels, cut them in good-sized squares, do a quick zig-zag stitch along all the edges, clean up all the stray fabric with scissors, wash them, put them in a clean box and drop them off at the senior day care. The people who run the Senior day care love it! See if you don't have a Senior Center around that would gladly take the towels, cut or uncut.

Drat! I just typed a really long response and the computer ate it. Grrrr. Okay, here goes again:

We have stayed in A LOT of hotels in OKC over the years. I don't know what your budget is, so I apologize if these are not in the price range you are looking at.

Downtown OKC: The OKC Festival of the Arts is going on the weekend of the Spring Fling, so if you wanted to stay downtown, you could walk to the Arts Festival and window shop and eat delicious food. The Downtown Sheraton, Marriot Renaissance, and Marriot Courtyard are all just outside of Bricktown and within easy walking distance to the Arts Festival. The Marriot Residence Inn is a little further from the Arts Festival, but has cheaper parking and is next door to Bass Pro. We've stayed in all of these hotels and never had any problems. They will all charge for parking, so keep that in mind.

If you like Casinos, there are two casino hotels not far from Paula: The Grand Hotel near Shawnee on i 40 and the Riverwind Hotel in Norman. We aren't casino people, so haven't stayed at either.

In Norman, we have stayed at the Embassy Suites and the Courtyard. The are both close to a lot of places to eat.

In Midwest City, we have stayed at the Sheraton Reed Center too many times to count. There's not a lot to do in MWC, but the hotel is safe and nice enough and would be a pretty short drive to Paula's.

In South OKC we have stayed at the Residence Inn and Fairfield Inn, both at the junction of I240 and I35. This probably isn't the best area, but we didn't have any problems at all at these hotels.

There are quite a few hotels by the airport that might be cheaper than the other options, but that would be a longer drive to the Spring Fling. Let me know if you have any questions about those.

Thank you Krista That is just the info I am looking for. I will look those up.
and oh wow Moni, that is so sweet. I am not 100% what exactly my schedule is yet but it would be easier to stay in the area than to drive 10 hours in 1 day. I am a simple lunchlady and love to talk all things garden. No axe murderer tendencies even when provoked LOL.
