I generally plant 1 inch apart and thin to at least 2" sometimes 3. This year I really didn't thin them out the way I usually do and thus the tangled mess that you see. I planted danvers this yr to try the long thin carrot but I found that I like nantes better. Also I have a couple of bins that I started recently for late fall harvest. The carrot is a little sweeter when harvested in cool weather. As an aside, the ground here didn't freeze until after turkey day for the last 2 yrs. Never happened before in all my yrs of gardening. Just another sign of global warming in my opinion.

I would suggest the electric heater and a "green house" to keep the warmth around the plants. There are a variety of ways you can create your own green house. I have used large cake containers (like they sell b-day cakes in at the grocery store). I have also used plastic sheeting to enclose a complete shelf (above, below and both sides) on my plant stand. I have not used an electric heater so I am not sure about the temps this would create but you have plenty of time to experiment before spring sowing. Bonny

Joanne,I have two phones,a blackberry and a Nokia Lumia.i can't figure out how to do it from the Lumia,so I use my BB.in the slot where it say image file to upload,I click on it and it takes me to my media san disc card,I then click on the pic I want to upload and that's it the pic is entered into the slot,when I finish typing my message I press preview,and that's where the pic open so you see it,I then press submit.and that's it, I am still trying to figure it out for the Lumia because it dosnt' load like that on it.i don't know if it will work on your phone either.velleta

Xuan I love your space!!!! It looks well-protected but also breezy and open. Well done! Josh I grow mine in full sun too and at 6500' thats a lot of sun-- but the plants thrive in it. I don't know what others do or what the books say (Read's book?) but my plants-- especially the pap- get over 12 hours of direct sun at the height of the Summer. The trick is keeping them well watered and fed-- given that they won't hold back. Of course, I have to ease my plants into outdoor growing. The change in sun intensity from inside to outside is exceptional for these plants and then add in the fact that I live in a high-wind area, it takes me a while to slowly move my plants into the full sun areas. Once there, they usually shed many of their winter leaves and replace them with very thick summer ones that with-stand the Spring winds. Of course, if we get a hail storm, they lose all of their leaves, but on advice from mental health professionals, I don't think about that possibility any longer. LOL
