Pine shavings around plants...

My daughter, Kait, was cleaning out her rabbit cage and I put the pine shavings, and ground corn cob around my plants. It was working so fabulously around the ones that had the rabbit poo and pine shavings that when she was cleaning them yesterday, I grabbed the bag of pine shavings and spread some around all of my warm crop veggies in my raised bed and in my containers.

Then, I came in and started reading the board and saw that wood chips will leach the nitrogen from the soil. Great... In your opinion, should I remove the pine shavings, and only use the pine shavings that have rabbit poo mixed in for extra nitrogen?

Wood shavings and mulches do not leach nitrogen from the soil when they are placed on top of the soil. The nitrogen-leaching issue can occur when wood is mixed into the soil...like when you rototill it into the soil. So, I don't think pine shavings on top of the soil are a problem, but I haven't used them that way myself (we don't have a pet rabbit or pine shavings) so someonee who has experience with them may be able to give you hands-on advice I lack.

Rabbit manure, though, is WONDERFUL.

Yes, what Okiedawn told you, you can pretty much take to the bank. When mixed into the soil, wood (shavings)etc will steal nitrogen from the soil, but it will return. I use horse stall shavings on my garden for mulch, and have had no trouble at all that I can tell. On another subject, I just fought a small war here with Cutworms, and I almost spit when I say it. I had transplanted my tomatoes over a two day period and about noon on the second day, as I walked down a row isle, it was like I was in a lumber camp. My tomato plants were falling over like a lumberjack felling timber. As I had taken no precautions, ie, nail beside the plant, collar around the plant etc, I just had a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. I quickly found some small bamboo sticks (about 3/8 of an inch in circumferance), and alighned them beside the plant stems. I lost 5 that day and 3 the next but it has leveled out now, I have not lost one since yesterday. Anyway use all the shavings you want to, as I dont think you will have any trouble.

Hi Gamebird - While I can't answer your question about turpentine, I can offer you some advise about grandparents. My grandma (93) has always had a garden and canned until this past year. When I started composting she told me not to use oak leaves as they will never decompose. After doing some research, I decided to use them. She was a bit disappointed when she found out (I think because I didn't take her advise) but after that I just didn't tell her. I love her but it's hard for her to accept "new-fangled" ideas. I had to search for other ways to can when I started because I realized her way wasn't the safest way. When I told her about what I'd learned about canning, her response was "haven't killed anyone yet". God love her! Mature oaks and many pines are thought of as first choices for under planting with azaleas. They generally are not surface rooted so offer little competition for surface rooted azaleas. Do a bit of preliminary digging to see if you will be searching for 'planting pockets' - areas that are not too rooty to accommodate your azaleas. Far enough out from the trunks that they are in a combination of filtered sun/shade and not dense shade. You will have to watch your watering to make sure the azaleas do not dry out, especially during the first year after planting....mulch will help. How far apart depends on which azaleas. The plant tag should tell you approx how tall and wide at maturity...if it reads 3' wide, leave roughly a minimum of three feet between plant crowns when planting for an eventual dense look, more if you plan to move in and out to groom, maintain, weed around them.

What is your zone? There are many acid loving plants, and the sunset Western Garden book has them all. Ferns, Camelias, Gardenias, Hydrangeas and azaleas come to mind. I spent many days tromping through the Sequioas with my dad, and loved the little flowers and ferns that happily grow under the shade of those giants. I have the opposite problem! Alkaline soil and mostly full sun! We do have two groupings of pines on our property, and NOTHING native grows under them. Just rocks and pine needles! A picnic table is planed for one area. Maybe you could soften your yard with conversation chairs or benches and rock paths? There is one silver leafed shrub among our pines, but I don't know what it is. Good luck! No soil, that is small parts of the barks. If I add any fine partical it will flow to the bottum and cause a perched water table. That size bark is good to use by itself. I use this as a soilless medium in 2 gal containers with a hydroponic fertilizer program. I would never add any fine partical to this ever. Homehydro, Thanks for the tip on the perlite, lucky me I have some now. Don't you use hydrogen peroxide? I do at all times, every water and fertilize I put H2o2 in the water before my nutes. When using H2o2 if you smell the roots, they will smell life fresh radishes. Compaired to the brown roots in a none treated system. Please look up how to use it all time in your system because once you see you will never stop using it. I am all drain to waste, no pumps so fine particals that come of the bark will not matter. I have only tapla to thank over in the container forum for inspiring me. Now I am waiting for the same place I got it to get more of the mulch in.

Sorry to hear about the cutworms. I hate them. At least you noticed it early and could save most your plants.

Bill, I just heard of cutworms and they do not sound friendly. I hate that you lost some of your plants, but glad that it seems to have leveled off...

Concerning cutworms. Years ago we planted a green manure crop in the garden over the winter. We quit doing it for two reasons. The first and most important was the deer. With only a 4 ft fence, the deer jumped in to eat the cover crop and came back for the veggies.

The other reason was cutworms. We learned that if we tilled the garden in late fall/early winter and again a couple weeks before planting in the spring that we cut the cutworms way way down. We don't till to cultivate during the growing season though, but hoe and mulch instead as by then the earthworms are up and we don't want to kill them.
