There was some cool stuff going on there.. I am not sure i would want it quite that close in the whole yard.. but areas of it were inspiring...

Next time I watch I'll have to turn up my speakers to hear his garlic recipe. Didn't he say that was for slugs? I was amazed to see no slug damage.

Yes, Deanna, he said the garlic recipe was for slugs. Buying garlic juice is quite expensive. But making it yourself is quite easy. I'm saving the video link for this one recipe as well.

Crush one whole garlic bulb. Add it to a liter of water.
Boil it for 5 minutes. Let it cool. Seive it, bottle it, and put in the fridge. To use, add 1 TBSP per liter of water and spray on the hosta leaves.

It will kill slug eggs, but it won't kill the adults, just drive them away.

He also said he cleaned up the debris in the garden, which was most important, then in February (his local climate is England) he put out the blue slug pellets. After the plants leafed out, that is when he did the garlic spray.

I did not notice any statement about repeating the spray, but looks to me like it wouldn't hurt to repeat it especially after a rain.

I have decided one little corner of my yard will have a second tier of Hosta next year.

Most of those hosta in these hanging gardens seem to get little direct sun and flourish. In respect to slugs, the height must prevent that slugs reach the upper pots. Now nobody any longer can say they have no more space, simply add those hanging gardens, and double your number of hostas!

About spraying, load several gallons of this garlic mixture into a pressurized sprayer and let all the hostas have it, perhaps with some fertilizer mixed in.

Ok, while I respect what they have going on there, I have to say that I'd not call them hostaholics. I'd call 'em hosta hoarders!

I don't understand why garlic would drive away slugs. However, I can see it driving away people. Phew!!

Hmmm...maybe the neighborhood cats would stop using my garden for a litter box.

It's interesting and has a lot of beautiful plants, but when you have to walk sideways down a path, it's way too crowded to truly enjoy all the beauty.

Gardenfanatic, wearing a bulb of garlic around the neck in an "asifidity" (spelling off more than likely) bag, was a good preventive to keep vampires away. And, it is of current interest that those old medieval folks had something right...because the ingredient/compound found in garlic is the same used in mosquito repellants. So it does repel blood sucking insects, but do not think it works with ticks or fleas. The video remark says it only irritates the slugs and sends them to the neighbor's yard.

And I think the hanging garden concept will have its uses here, where I can raise some containers off the ground and use the posts to create additional shade with some 90% shade cloth that I bought last year. My zone 8B garden gets really a lot of sun, plus it gets hot. Just so I do not create an oven, keep the air circulating, all should be well.

Adding the fertilizer to the spray job should kill two birds with one stone. I guess a good manure tea would work nicely. I could afford to make fresh batches of the garlic slug repellent on demand.

I love it! I have a very tiny garden, and I love hostas -- I think I have room for at least one of those "pagodas" and a tier across the brick wall fo the kitchen.
