I think I would haul them in only if I thought the wood might be infested with termites. Even though redwood is resistant overtime weathered wood can apparently be infested. Those chemicals are ones used in soil fumigation but obviously not the same rate, formulations, etc. Some of these chemicals are being phased out and none of them are available to the homeowner to sterilize their soil. I don't think psyllids have a cycle where they are in the soil anyway (?) and I would not go to all that trouble for ants. Just use boiling water or soap and water. You could dump all the soil on a big tarp, add new compost, etc. and put the redwood containers in to be gassed. I tend to agree with the technician but I am no expert so could not tell you to go ahead and do it. I pour boiling water (VERY CAREFULLY) in containers invested with nematodes --would not be prepared to do what you propose because it seems to be the antithesis of Integrated Pest Management gardening where you go for the least toxic methods first.

Hard to tell without seeing the whole plant, but your plants have several issues. Only 4 plants from 40 seeds survived? When were they planted? What kind of soil are they planted in? Your container looks too small for one plant, not to mention 4. They don't seem to be getting enough light or food. Sorie, The only other thing I can think of is that both are prone to lots of foliar diseases and both tend to get hit hard here by spider mites when the really hot weather arrives. Thus, I don't necessary plant them very close together. But, I've grown them 3 or 4' from one another and didn't have any more trouble with them in that way than when they were 30' apart. Hope this helps clarify what few concerns I'd have about growing them together. And, if space is limited, plant them together. What's the worse that can happen? Oh, and one more thing. Every now and then we have a bad blister beetle year. Maybe once or twice a decade. In my garden the blister beetles devour two types of plants and only move on to other plants after they've eaten those two. Guess what those two are? Cucumber plants and tomato plants. Dawn
