just recieved my xmas presents to myself,got to get them planted over the weekend before the weather changes over here...still very mild..will post pickies soon of the great hostas i recieved..but this is the list of hostas santa sent early!!!

I have both Fleet Week and Fluted Fountain. Are you wanting them or have questions.

I've always thought I'd like to have 'Fluted Fountain', myself. Almost got it this summer
but the person I was buying from, when I was deciding, told me it was a nice hosta, for
a green, but not what I'd want for a stand out in my garden!!

catwhiskas The plant to the left of the cuphea is one of my gartenmeister fuschias. Last year they used them quite a bit but this year they seem to prefer the salvias, bee balm and cuphea. Lisa and Oubliette, This one wasn't started from seed. I bought this one in a little three inch pot when we went to Indiana over Memorial week end. It only had 3 small branches on it when I bought it and it has really filled out. I had to move it to a shadier location because the Japanese beetles were having a field day with it in the bright sunlight.. Here is another picture after the sun came up so it is a little brighter. He/she is on the top right hand side: Usually my adult hummers don't pay any attention to me when I am out in the yard. They will go to the feeders and sip until they are content and then fly off but as catwhiskas stated the juveniles will fly off at the slightest breeze. Penny

I planted about seven clumps of Musa Basjoo back in early June. I put them straight into an unamended clay soil, gave them a little bit of soaker hose water daily, and gave them a little 13-13-13 fertilizer a couple of times (I know that's probably not the best ratio). When I put them in the ground the tallest were about three feet tall. Now several of them are at about twelve feet! These things grow FAST. In Alabama we have a very hard time getting them to keep growing during the winters. They always turn a rotten brown color and die back. In the very early spring we cut off the dead stuff, and they begin growing again. I have noticed many people cut it off early once it dies, but the plant seems to grow better the next season if you wait. Anyways, that's how it goes here, year in, year-out. One very important thing about these: they will NOT fruit if they die back. It seems one growing season is not enough for them. Not sure why.

hhireno, the weather is the big gamble. Plan & train for heat. Last year the midwest was suffering from a terrible prolonged heat wave. My riding buddy, who went ahead with our RAGBRAI plans after I bailed out sick, texted me, "It's 7pm & upper 90s. I'm sitting in a treeless camp site, praying for a breeze along with 250 other campers." So figure that's the worst. Sometimes it's only pleasantly hot (upper 80's, low 90's), sometimes perfect (mid 80's), & sometimes it rains. We woke up one day to a downpour and rode 55 miles in it. Another night a thunderstorm erupted around 3 a.m. The way the ride works is, there's a start town & a destination town each day, with about 8 stopping points along the way, small towns that throw a party for the riders. Plenty of food, drink, dancing, sidewalk sales, & socializing. In between the stopping points, Iowans are out selling food & cold drinks. Every church group, boy scout den, fire department, high school band, little league team, et al. is out to raise money by selling stuff to the riders. Believe or not, you can ride RAGBRAI & gain weight! It's truly a rolling food fest. Or Woodstock On Wheels, as one rider put it, except the drugs are tylenol & Aleve :) We hire a "sherpa" service. The service we use sets up a small tent city on school grounds or parks or farms at each stopover town. They provide the tent, set it up, take it down, transport our stuff to the next site, provide a light breakfast, some dinners, post-ride drinks & snacks, portable showers & toilets, mid-week laundry service, bike mechanics and even host entertainment in the campsite. If you don't think you can do the day's ride, they have a bus to shuttle you to the next campsite. Well, gotta get another ride in before the rain comes today. Training for it is a huge time commitment. But I had so much fun in 2010, I just have to do it at least one more time in my life!

Thank you, everyone! I do have a house in mind. It's been up for sale since January. It's a fixer upper, but it's a unique house that I hope to get a good deal on. Not as good a deal as the current owner who bought it at auction in 2013. He was going to turn it into a rental, but changed his mind and now wants to sell it. I've wanted the house since I was a kid. I'm sure I can get the financing, I just have to wait a few more days before I can start the process, and hope no one else grabs the house before I do. In my town, houses don't sell very fast, anyway, but my luck after waiting all this time it'll probably sell. Here's the house, an 1890 Victorian: The bricked in window has been like that for a very long time. There's old black and white photos of it showing it bricked in, so maybe they decided that room had too many windows? Dunno what they were thinking back then. The square thing is a vent to a gas fireplace that is no longer there. I would like to, if I get this place, sometime down the road if it's possible to turn that back into a window again, or at the very least get rid of that ugly vent. It sits on a .25 acre lot, and there's plenty of shade for the hostas, but unfortunately the shade comes from sugar maples. The landscaping is next to zero, so I practically have a clean slate. Karen

These are my great new hostas..cant recommend HOSTAWORLD(vandentop) enough,always top quality hostas!....also FRANSENS hostas are another great hosta grower!...both seem to be on top of the hvx virus as well!

Fleet Week has grown very well for me. Rabbits seem to think my Fluted Fountain is a dinner salad. It keeps regrowing but I have not seen enough to judge. I love solid color plants as much as any other. I am sure you have Regal Supreme ! I have a nice Fluctuans ( non var. Sagae ) all green that is stunning. Foxfire Zulu the all green Cascades is another all green you may like also.

Hey 'UK' how do you preserve the hosta you get at this time of the year?
Do you pot them up or refrigerate them or just store them as they come?

hey_j....gone straight into big pots...dont seem to mind over here,never lost one yet!(oh god should not say that)..if it gets really cold will cover with fleece,but our winters seem to be getting milder....still wearing shorts!!

and please UK ... correct me if i am wrong ...

UK is near 60 latitude .... or so ...

and yet.. because of the north Atlantic drift ... ocean currents... they barely know what winter is .... nor summer for that matter ... lol ...

they are extremely temperate .... i doubt there is any soil freeze ... and i am talking down in the civilized parts.. lol ... not the north.. scotland ...

actually... i wouldnt be surprised if they are barely able to hold the requisite dormancy length in some areas ...

so getting plants this time of year.. is probably no problem at all ... and holding them over winter the same ....

did i come even close UK?????

on the other hand .. they are so far north ... with the declination of the sun and all two things happen...

one .... ALL HOSTA CAN BE GROWN FULL SUN .... the sun just isnt intense enough to burn them ..

and...

two.. they are a pasty looking peeps... cause the sun doenst get high/intense enough to get a good tan ... rotflmbo .... [just kidding on that one UK] ..

now go try to wrap your head around all that...

ps: that is why grenfell books are NOT GOOD for cultural info like SUN REQUIREMENTS .... go figure

pps: and just about every hosta grower i personally know over there .. grows them in pots... due to yard size restrictions ....

KEN....you are a spot on with most of what you say...apart from the 'pasty' thing!...summers have moved to september/october..rains in july/august..june is awsome!..april/may pot luck!...but hostas seem to love it!
Ive never lost a hosta over the past 5 years when ever i planted it!!
