Wow---I'm already impressed by H. June

I recently (mid/late August) purchased three cultivars for my new hosta bed: Twilight, Paradigm and June. I believe that the Twilight and Paradigm are mature divisions...they are huge compared to the June, which are approx. 6-7" high by 6-7" wide.

Like many in the Northern US, we are currently transitioning from fall to winter. My Twilight and Paradigm have gone dormant, but to my surprise the June still look great! They look identical to how they did in August, despite having been through a couple of frosts.

Thank you for the earlier posts and subsequent feedback involving June; they were key in my decision to purchase the cultivar. I am looking forward to Spring 2011!

June is from Halcyon and it's one that's still looking good now too, even in my zone 4 garden that's had several nights this week in the 20's. Literally everything that is NOT a Halcyon sport or hybrid has turned brown.

June is one of the best, if not, THE best!

mosswitch - no, I could not find any label to that hamamelis. it is some not too tall growing cultivar, perhaps 6 years old from a now-closed nursery on Long Island, NY. Greer Gardens has hamamelis, and it is probably Hamamelis x intermedia -Arnold Promise-. Mine does not grow fast. The red flowering witch hazel, the flowers of which are not well to see against a brown background, is probably Hamamelis x intermedia -Diane-. That probably needs to grow a lot to be noticed. Is the hydrangea really that shade of mixed pink and purple? (Sometimes colors don't photograph well.) If you want something short to puddle at the feet of the taller plants I could see Nierembergia, which might well winter over for you, though for me it's treated as an annual. A short Campanlua like 'Blue Clips' or 'White Clips' would serve the same function. Both have enough flower power in my experience to be seen from a distance if planted en masse but are well behaved and come in blue and white. If you want other spikier plants, there are some Campanulas like persicifolia that might work, though I don't know if seeding is a problem for them or if they have enough flowers for your use. This also is available in blue and in white. There are some shorter summer-blooming "tall" phlox on the market now that would be a bit shorter than the daylilies and would sort of match the shape of the hydrangea flowers, but later in the summer. Don't know what colors those come in. A shorter daylily in front might work also. Some of the yellow hostas seem fairly sun tolerant and might work here if deer aren't a problem for you, depending on how much shade your part shade is and what time of day. I find the yellow foliage stands out against the greens. My Siberian iris can be pretty stunning in mid to late spring and the foliage is neat the rest of the year, but it looks similar to the day-lilies as far as foliage. Some of the shorter rhodies and azaleas might look good here if you don't mind the short season of bloom and have the room. How tall are your daylilies? That's what has occurred to me so far - don't know if any of those meet your requirements and taste.

Jan, don'tgive upon June. Mine has just survived it's 2nd year in my Morning Glory Garden where it receives 3 hours of mid-morning sun. I'd bought it at a local hardware store (not BigBox) for $6 and it was a roll of the dice. This year it more than doubled in size and I am really looking forward to next year. Some hostas that are probably doing what Steve mentions are Earth Angel, Guardian Angel, and Queen of the Seas. They were planted in a new bed between a pair of plantaginea and a pair of Sweet Innocence and an El Nino. All were new aquisitions last year and planted at the same time. The plantaginea, S I, and E N did great, the QotS eh!, but the two angels not very impressive. EA did send up a single pet about 4" from the main pets so next spring could be a different story, and GA had a good 2nd flush though the leaves remained small. If we hadn't gotten a good rain at the end of August I don't think any of my hostas would have had a 2nd flush, so maybe with the need of water everything went into root development. I don't know what your rain situation was this year Jan, but that may be what has caused your non-performers to look not so good. I have already posted about my Cherry Berry. I have had no success with lance shaped leaves with light centers. Fireworks lasted only one season and never came up in year two. I think my June, in year 3, will be a winner. I have a new "used" camera now so everyone prepair for pics to begin coming as I learn to use it. My old cam died when it wouldn't focus adjust. Vaporvac: I bought Shocking Blue, Zeph. Drouhin, Savannah, and Orchid Romance. Really kick myself for NOT getting those huge bags of MG-garden-soil for roses sold for $4 each at Walmart early spring. Walmart is sold out, same with HomeDepot, and Lowe's selling it for $9 per bag !! My roses which were grown in MG-moisture-control potting soil had wimpy roots and didn't survive my winter, but my roses which were grown in heavy & wet soil like MG-Garden-soil for roses developed THICK & SOLID roots that survive winter and flower lots. It's even wetter than my clay !! For the record: every own-root (be it tiny band-size) or gallon-size which I planted right smack into my dense & alkaline clay survive many winters, but the ones which I babied in pots (with potting soil) grew wimpy roots that didn't survive zone 5a winter, no matter how I did it: be it putting potting soil into the ground, or grow in pots 1st, then transfer to the ground (my alkaline clay) later. MG-garden-soil for roses (pink-bag with pic. of roses) was on sale at Walmart for $4 per huge bag. That soil is AWESOME in moisture-retention. I had 3 bags opened in hot sun over 90 F: Hyponex potting soil, Scott's premium bagged soil, and MG-garden-soil-for roses. Hyponex dried up into hard-granules, Scott's-top-soil dried up to hard-black-pellets, but MG-soil-for roses STAYED WET AND FLUFFY. I moved W.S. 2000 (own-root) right before winter, and planted that in a bag of MG-garden-soil for roses (only $4), plus mixed In gypsum. W.S. 2000 was the 1st rose to bloom (despite being moved), and having 20+ buds right now as own-root. Own-roots have short roots, so they can't reach down below for minerals, best use a HIGH-MINERALS & HIGH-NUTRIENTS soil like MG-garden-soil-for roses, which has black-peat (de-composed humus), plus peatmoss & pH-balanced to neutral with lime. Fluffy potting soil like MG-moisture control can't enable solid roots for winter-survival, like heavy clay or heavy soil like MG-garden-soil for roses. For newly bought own-roots I have to use a HUGE amount of soluble-fertilizer NPK 20-20-20 weekly to get blooms. Potting soil has zero-nutrients peatmoss, plus a few chemical granular-fertilizer. Too much hassle to fertilize frequently so I would rather use a rich & fertile soil like MG-garden-soil for roses, which is dense & heavy & black peat mixed with peatmoss, rather than fluffy-peat-moss-potting soil which produced wimpy alfalfa-sprout roots and thin canes. I have never seen any black soil which retain moisture as long as MG-garden-soil for roses, see below pic. In contrast, there's the lousy rating for MG-garden soil with mostly wood-chips. I live in N IL and I need to transplant some Hosta now!

Over the past 20 yrs, Ive transplanted hundreds of Hosta around our yard with success. However, due to a construction project that will start this fall I have to move some old Hosta or loose them! NOW!!

When I've transplanted Hosta before, I tape the leaves up, water the plants a week or so before I move them, relocate to new location while adding compost, and continue watering for 3-4 weeks.

I Imagine I could take larger clumps of dirt, dig larger holes and water a couple of times.

Any comments would be appreciated,,,,,,

Wow, swmogardens, this June must get a lot of sun, it almost looks like a June Fever. We have two like that, and several in much more shade that are much darker and subtler. Beautiful, nonetheless, thanks for posting!

The entire 'Halcyon' family is well-known for being one of the last to go down. I was doing some re-potting this afternoon and noticed 'Touch of Class' looks as good today as it did in August and 'First Frost' is still going strong as well. There's a lot to like in the members of this family, staying power is but one of them.

First Frost is still the best looking hosta in my garden. Halcyon is next, and Color Glory. Rainforest Sunrise,Paradigm, Cathedral Windows, Stained Glass, T Rex, Guacamole, Abiqua Drinking Gourd, all still look great plus a few more. We have not had a killing frost yet tho, maybe later this week. Then we shall see who comes thru that.

I just might use one of my new planting beds (that I was planning to plant heucheras in) and squeeze another June in :)

Here are two Junes growing on my porch in Eastern NY zone 5a today on Nov.4 2010. We had killing frosts, but these two plants keep green. They get diffused light. Behind are two Olive Bailey Langdon which gave up. All plants were $2 each at HD this spring, probably recent TCs, but I thought they will be great on the porch.
