Comments (32)Juicy Fruit chewing gum, LOL, I sure like to know who these people are who discover such remedies! These square traps were just purchased the other day, I caught another one this morning. I'm figuring once you catch one their scent is left on the box, as well they see that bright hole that needs to be covered up. We used to have the round ones (the original Blackhole Trap), but I looked high and lo for them and can't find them anywhere! Thankfully we do not have Raccoons around here, at least I haven't seen one. Knock on wood Maisy has never confronted a Skunk or Porcupine either around the acreage. We were supposed to get those 3 cats earlier in the season, but the lady gave them to someone else. I think there's another lady up the road who has kittens that are ready to give away. I would like to get them before winter sets in so that they can get comfortable with their new enviroment and catch those mice! Sharon...See MoreMoles...garlic? mint?
Comments (23)For Kay_H: I've had moles for years, ever since I moved in where I live...Never cared much about it, my husband took care of mowing. But since I've retired, I spend a lot of time out in my yard and I can't hardly walk anywhere in my yard without sinking. I've tried drowning them and smashing as many tunnels as I can...but they have so many tunnels they just wait until the water soaks into the ground and then dig out all the ones I've smashed. I have cats but they are not much good...And I don't like using chemicals or anything harmful to the animals & birds. But your right...I've been reading some of the comments here and clearly these people have never had an infestation of moles... For mecs7705: I was looking at the garlic tubes. Do you work for Gemplers or Houzz? Or have you actually tried them? I'm going to try them anyway, because I'm getting desperate..lol I will let everyone know if they work....See MoreSetting Mole Trap, See Roots Spreading, Yea!
Comments (23)Hubby and I moved to a great old house built in 1951 on an acre in a semi-rural area. We have Fruit& Nut Trees and LOVE our gardening.. Veggie, Herb and flower, you name it! For 6 years we have had a mole/vole problem tearing up and tunneling the whole yard.. The tunnels are just below the grass and everywhere. I think they got FAT on those so called Poision peanuts. They do NOT work. We have well water so I'd rather trap the monsters. Also in the veggie garden something got to our sweet potatoes this year with underground tunnels there were teeth marks on alot of them and this made me so ... unhappy! Hubby found an old mole trap in the wood shed which works. But HOW do you set it and what do you do, bury the bottom in an active tunnel? We are both retired and can't afford to go out and buy anything right now so we want to try the mole trap. It is really long, (tall) and has spikes on the bottom and two flat bars where the mole is trapped and killed (GOOD!) it's unlike the wide short ones we see pictured online so it must be an older version. Can anyone tell us how to use this? We also would appreciate how to use the mouse trap bucket way. I'm sure we have a few moles and voles if not more. Thanks my fellow gardening friends!...See MoreMoles - destroying my yard!!
Comments (15)Heather, We keep having a 10% or 20% chance and getting nothing, but currently have a 40% chance for Thursday. I know a lot can change between now and then, but I pinning a lot of "hope" on that 40% chance. We even tried washing the car and the pick-up truck hoping that would make it rain, and it didn't even work. It does amaze me how those little rodents can churn through soil and "rototill" it so easily compared to how hard it is for us to break up the same clay soil with a big rototiller! I have been trying to console myself with the thought that at least in the area where they are, I now have well-aerated soil. Yesterday two of our cats were playing with a mole, vole, or gopher....I deliberately did not get close enough to see which little beast it was. I hope they find and kill them all. I stay away from poisons because of our pets, but I wouldn't argue that other folks shouldn't use them. I think it is a matter of personal preference, and for people for whom repellents do not work, trapping or poisoning are the other options. Jeanie, They seem worse this year. To figure out which ones you have, read the attached link and study the mounds and tunnels (if you see any tunnels). The kind of pest you have will determine which plants are or aren't threatened. I don't think anything bothers daffodil bulbs though. Newhippie, Enjoy them while they're little (the girls, not the moles/gophers/voles) because they grow up so fast! One of my favorite photos of our now-adult son was when he (dressed in a white sunsuit) and our white dog, Sam, picked up a running water hose and turned a dumptruck load of topsoil into an ocean of mud. They both were covered from head to toe in mud and we laughed until we cried. Mari, We're fine. Same old adventure of living near the river with a ton of wildlife and so on. Never a dull moment here. I hope you mom is doing well. If you want to hire professional help, I say go for it! No one says you have to spend every spare minute slaving over the yard....and being short on time makes it hard to keep the yard looking the way you want. I think if the yard is causing more stress instead of being a happy place to destress, hire that professional and let them do the work while you do the relaxing and enjoying. We all get better at growing things every year. I'm glad to hear you're getting better harvests. As the years go on, it will get better and better. We gardeners never stop learning and experimenting and finding better ways to do things, and that keeps gardening interesting.
