I need this orchid identified Please

G'Day....O.k. here is another orchid rescued before the bulldozers arrive in March. Sorry, have not seen this one in flower, and I've potted it but it came off the fork of a large Jacaranda tree. However, I'm told by the 87 y.o property owner that it has a purple and white flower( but don't depend on that) I cannot tell you if it's one of our Australian Natives either. Thanks ...in anticipation "smile"

It looks like the species, Dendrobium anosmum.

It could be anything. There are many species Dendrobiums with that leaf and plant form. A photo of the blooms may get you an id. If it is a hybrid the id is just about impossible even with the plant in bloom.

Hi, I want to thank you all! I'd never figured it out myself. I googled the name you gave me and indeed, got a lot of pictures and it looks exactly like mine. Except for the ones on the pictures looking a bit whiter than mine, but i guess that could be due to the orchid having less intensity here at my home. Here i grow my plants (so far) without using any grow lights, etc. In one of the descriptions i read was told that this flowers were scented. Mine aren't. But again, it could be due to not having 100% ideal growing conditions here at my livingroom. Again: MANY, many thanks for your help. It is most appreciated!

Soooo ... no way to tell any better than just "phalaenopsis"? No guess at the particular type of phalaenopsis? No suggestions for how to treat this in a desert climate? I already googled before I came here. (I GUESSED they were phalaenopsis from the leaves but wasn't sure). Anything dealing with being in a desert was along the lines of "when I moved to Arizona I lost 100 of my orchids, they need to be specially treated in a dry climate, you'll have to guess how" or "here is how I set up my $250,000 greenhouse to auto mist in my desert climate". Neither of which help me all that much, LOL! I did stumble across a LOT of information about Growstone and orchids. From what I've read, I might try it some day but only in combinations with peat moss to counteract the alkalinity of the Growstone. Not going to try that right out of the starting gates though. I spent years trying to find a good soil mix for my potted plants (indoors and out) because I hadn't been able to get coarse vermiculite for decades and any kind of bark that would be useful for a potting mix was also getting harder to find (and in fact 3 years ago ALL the local big box stores stopped carrying anything except shredded cedar, rubber, and dyed ground up old houses in anything approaching an appropriate potting mix size). Growstone and peat (the crappy finely milled peat that is all I've been able to find here in the last couple of years) has made an EXCELLENT potting mix for everything I grow, but ... maybe not these orchids, so much, LOL!

It might be a variety of Dendrobium canaliculatum or a hybrid with something else, hard to say. Closely related to Dendrobium antennatum which comes from Papua/New Guinea. Dendrobium canaliculatum comes from a warm all year climate (Tropical North Australia) with maximum rainfall in summer.

Dendrobium. What's the history of this plant? Do you believe it to be a wild species or is it a garden plant? If a species, your choice is a bit more limited as there are only a handful of Dend species native to Australia. Which having been said, to me it looks more like an introduced species. Maybe Dend moschatum - hard to tell without some indication of size. When it flowers post us again. I'm sure we'll get it for you.

Thanks , I think Pheli go it right. I have looked at many pics of Anosmum and read write ups..and I'm pretty sure Pheli is correct. Like I said "I have not seen it in flower" but i will show the property owner pics of Anosmum . She has had it many years and will know. As for me...my knowledge of orchids is just about Zilch, it could be a stick of rhubarb as far as I know. Actually I do know some species but my forte is Australian Grass Finches. I'm just on a rescue mission to save what I can from her property before the bulldozers arrive in msrch. Thanks again

In the book Native Orchid of Australia by David L Jones, there are listed over 100 species and varieties of Dendrobium. The exact number is elusive because the good Doctor Jones is at work renaming and confusing orchid growers.

The form of the plant as i said above is common in Dendrobiums from the North and looks like is not much evidence. Without a flower picture this is just wild guessing.
