Brand spanking new...

Help! I am planting my first garden ever this year. Although I realize I am getting a late start, I plan to put lettuce, broccoli and cabbage in the ground this morning. If you have any advice, please share. I also plan to plant tomatoes, cucumbers, okra, corn, watermelon and cataloupe at the appropriate time. Unfortunately, I don't know when that is. Thanks for advice!

I hope with the lettuce, cabbage and broccoli you are starting with seedlings and not seeds since it already is so late.

Advice? Read the OSU Garden Planning Guide I've linked below and then come back and ask us the questions you need answered. In that guide, you'll see planting dates given as a range of dates like this: April 10 - April 30. The earliest date given is for southeastern OK and the latest date given is for northwestern OK so, depending on where you live in the state, choose some planting date in between those two extremes....unless you actually are in SE OK or NW OK.

Tomatoes need to be planted as trannsplants and it really is too late to start them from seed now to grow your own, so it would be better to purchase tomato plants to put into the ground. All the others that you listed can be direct-seeded, and we are getting very close to the earliest recommended planting date for sweet corn.

To the extent that you can, try to plant everything on-time or even a week or two early if the weather permits. With cool-season crops and some heat-sensitive warm-season crops, even planting them a couple of weeks later than the recommended dates can significantly impact your harvest in a negative way. That is especially true if we have a roasting-hot summer like we had last year.

Finally, it all starts with the soil. In order to have a good garden, you need good soil. The best seeds and the best transplants in the world will not perform well if you have poor soil.

Hi Mammy! Welcome to the forum. Best group of people I've met online. Just an awesome bunch.

This year is my second year but technically my first because I started way too late last year in the middle of the heat wave. But I learned SO much about dirt and soil amendments.

I just now got my broccoli and cabbage and cauliflower in the ground. I probably won't get produce from them but, HEY, I'm learning and the ground needs roots in it and they'll tell me how they like the soil.. so there they go.

My warm weather seedlings are little behind because I had to start over but they look good and I'm excited to see how far I get with everything this year.

tessa, you are definitely in a whole different world from cali here. Use that Texas Smartscape link heavily, if the plant is listed there, it will survive. The first concern here is heat, the second is water - the less water the plant needs the better, the way our drought is going. What is the sun level, do theses beds get eastern sun (morning), western sun (afternoon) or both? On your acid loving plants if you want them to thrive, you need to dig out the soil in those beds down about 6-8 inches, which probably gets you to Texas clay, then get rid of it. Replace that old soil with an acid soil mix, which apparently comes prepackaged, or ask at your local nursery how to mix, takes peat moss, pulverized pine bark, maybe some others. If you can take the time, take a drive down to Northhaven Gardens in Dallas, and bring all your questions, they are undoubtedly the best source I have found for info. There may be a good locally owned nursery in McKinney, if there is go there. I am redoing my backyard, and have experimented in my front, so here is a list of things that have survived or have good reputations for me: Afternoon or all day sun Coreopsis Blanket Flower (gaillardia) Homestead Verbena Spirea (Anthony Waterer, Neon Flash, Goldmound) Crape Myrtle Blackeyed susan Goldsturm Gaura Roses - Tropicana, Belindas Dream, Fragrant Cloud, Granada, Double Delight, The Fairy Loropetalum Pink Muhly grass Nandina, any kind Echinacea, any kind Achillea Russian Sage Salvia Greggi, especially the pink Texas Sage Coral Honeysuckle Victoria Salvia Scabiosa Clematis Phlox Morning sun the perennials listed in afternoon sun are ok in morning sun, but may bloom less or become leggy. Shrubs are fine Hosta Heuchera Shasta Daisy Crossvine Shade Japanese painted fern Wood fern Est Indian Holly Fern Hosta any ivy I will be trying Encore Azaleas this year after replacing my soil as described. That happened to mine when I first got it too. It's a tight fit, so the knob is probably a little stuck. Try this: On the knob for the burner that's stuck, pull out the knob. Now look at the bezel that's screwed onto the range. That's the part that has the red line. I think that gets jarred during shipping. See if you can move it up or down a little. The center of that bezel might be a little out of line so it's rubbing against the knob stem. Try that and report back. Also, instead of unplugging the range, just pull out the knob and replace it. You'll probably see the tight fit I'm talking about. Readjusting the knob should stop clicking. If you don't want to try what I suggest yourself, give Capital a call in the morning. Mine is fine now after I realigned the knob assembly.

First of all, you don't give the sizing of furnace and AC condensers quoted.. Repost. As to Lennox, it is a distant third in the top tier HVAC brands. One and two being Carrier and Trane and their sister companies Bryant and Am Std. And yes, they think highly of their product. I don't know enough about Maytag other than to say they are part of the appliance brand HVAC companies marketed by parent Nordyne. For the most part the HVAC is identical across the various companies. As to Amana, it is cosidered to be the premium brand to parent Goodman. You should note this dealer is quoting a Distinctions furnace which is a rebadged Goodman. I don't care for that furnace. I would want a true Amana furnace. What efficiency are you looking for? Lennox dealer quoted a two stage var speed 80% model. You might look at one of these Amana furnace models. 80% AFUE AMVC8 / ADVC8, 80% AFUE AMEH8 What size HVAC are you replacing? Post back. IMO

No Easy Off in that oven!!! Chemical cleaners should not be used in self-clean ovens is that it's practically impossible to fully rinse away the cleaner. The chemical residue can then generate noxious/toxic fumes when the self-clean cycle is run due to the high temp of a self-clean cycle. So, technically you can use oven cleaner, but you should NEVER run a self-clean cycle at any point after that. I would try a steamer if you have one and continuing to rub with a wet rough cloth. When you've gotten all you can off, try the self-clean. Not sure about ramifications of using a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser for Kitchens in there, but it works well on my rangetop to remove stuck on grease. Hope this helps & good luck!

Hello!

This is only my third year gardening and while I have learned a lot, I can honestly say you cannot learn enough when it comes to gardening! Don't be like me, take your time, learn as you go and just have fun with it. Keep a journal! I cannot stress that enough. I am the worst for that and I pay dearly now! Don't have to be fancy, just something log what works and what does't so you remember from year to year. It really is the best way to learn what works for you.

I just planted transplants last weekend, and with all this rain I am so glad I didn't plant anymore!
