Ever hear of this tip?

Somebody sent me an email today with tips for using cucumbers. Tip#4 on the list was about slugs. See below.

Never heard of it...how 'bout you guys?

#4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.

Ken, I haven't been around in a while so I missed that
thread on the cucumbers.

Sorry that I caused you to waste a couple of seconds of your time by reading a repeat post.

It is definitely possible to be allergic to something when it is raw and not be allergic to it when it is cooked, so he may well be allergic. The allergen in question gets denatured in the cooking process and then it is safe to eat. For instance, I've been eating cooked kale for years but ended up going into anaphylactic shock after eating my first kale salad. (That wasn't my first rodeo so I had an Epipen with me). If your husband has allergies to different pollens, then he's much more likely to develop these kinds of reactions. Look into oral allergy syndrome and you might find that he reacts to many of the fruits and vegetables that are known triggers of this. Depending on the severity of these reactions, he might want to visit an allergist and think about getting shots. If it's just one or two vegetables, then it's probably not worth it but if he starts reacting to just about everything, then shots for all the trees, grasses, and "weeds" can help.

Spider Gold Granite - ever hear of it?

We saw a granite today at a new place...I know granite names vary from place to place but I can usually find a few references to a name when I google it. I found spider gold marble but its nothing like this (and this is def. granite, not marble) It's spider gold from India - anyone familiar with it? We have it on hold...pretty sure this is the one we are going with, just waiting to hear from the fabricator on the exact price. The picture doesn't do it justice.

Ever hear of a weed called common bright-eye?

Over here the species usually referred to as Common Eyebright is Euphrasia officinalis, although there are lots of naturally occurring hybrids and subspecies. The 'officinalis' bit tells you it has been used medicinally - which also accounts for its common name. Were you interested in this plant from a herbal point of view?

the first line is an obtuse reference to phineas and ferb .... tongue in cheek ... which, unless you have kids , you probably dont know about ....

Slow days in the garden today here in SW Virginia - bring on the cucumbers!.

Last hosta dividing and planting last Sat.: Chinese Sunrise, Elegans, Green Fountains, Gold Edger, Invincible - all extras that I cleaned out of a bed a month ago and never got around to dividing until last weekend.

Replanted about 150 Brugmansia cuttings this morning - to root for the winter. ONLY broinging in 30+ big pots and all those sticks. Did have a bloom on the bananas again this summer.

Transplanted three Japanese maple seedlings into patio pots.

Transplanted 25 oaks into the transitional plan with my hybrid poplars - and four 4 year old yellow buckeyes from seed!

60 degree and rain - healthy!

How many more years will you be able to dig those banana trees to over winter them!!!! LOL

Please post pictures of what you bring in like you did last year. You have to have better lightening than most of us do to be able to keep your cuttings and potted plants alive and thriving while you wait for spring.
