looking for a marker that won't fade and is waterproof..

If anyone has a suggestion what works please post.I find that I have to re do it every 2 years as they wash out or fade? What am I doing wrong here.I like to mark my roses and don't want to constantly re write them.Thanks

I've found one that I'm happy with....so far. I picked up this at Art Knapp's last year, (Perma Stake Garden Marker for outdoor use). The key is to make sure whatever you buy says it's both water and fade resistant. Some are better than others, Another option I've had good results with is a China Marker/Grease Pencil.

Pencil. As far as I can tell, it lasts forever. For big thick lines, use a soft pencil.

I use soda cans cut in 1/2"-3/4" strips and "engraved" with ballpoint pen. I can get 8 to 12 out of a can worth 5 cents redemption, and can still recycle the top and bottom. They can be stuck in the dirt or one end coiled around a branch. They've lasted well for me so far, but a friend says hers started to disintegrate after 8 or 10 years. But we have very acidic air and soil, lots of rain, and strong sun--those all deteriorate things quickly.

Anyone who would prefer to go and get your garden markers instead of mail ordering them, might want to look at a place called Argyle Acres---if you are anywhere near the north of Dallas area. Actually they seem to do mail-order only all year except for their open house starting April 11. They are an iris farm, not a rose source. I have only just found their website, but I intend to go to their open house next month and carry away some markers. I'm also VERY happy to find an iris farm closer to me than Arkansas. I'm a member of freecycle and two other members have notified me that they have old miniblinds (and pots, hopefully large ones) that they want to get rid of. The miniblinds do not have to be in any shape, they can be completely useless or unattractive as blinds, so I can keep them out of the landfill when people have to throw them out. I am probably going to get more than I need, and I hope it won't take too long for me to cut them up and make the markers. I've been waiting for an opportunity like this, though, because I have so many, many plumerias that also need cultivar, seedling markings. It's a great find because the blinds are free, and I am keeping them out of the landfill (a big plus to me).

Mini-blinds work well for labels. Pencil is the longest lasting marker.I use a childs large, fat pencil and write large. Use a mouse pad and indent the plastic as you print and the impression will be there after the mark is gone. The plastic will get brittle and break, eventually,so I use two tags.Try to start out with less brittle blinds. Heavy aluminum foil(can material),and copper foil, thusly indented, last for many years. I have buried them in containers,close to the surface,for years. 26-24 guage telephone wire, with the insulation left on, works well to tie mini-blind tags on,for breeding id tags. The absolute best marker is stainless steel. The cheapest way to have that, is to visit thrift shops and yard sales, to buy flatware knives,with solid handles,without much decoration,so they can be written on. The best way I have found to mark stainless, is to use a Dremel mototool and a diamond bit. I use two of those markers. One, on one side,visible,the other, on the other side,below the surface. If you put them at the edge side of the plant,the offsets won't grow into them. There is no such thing as an indelible pencil,or a permanent marker.No one has been able to develop them, without the chemicals which were once in them. Good luck tagging. Del

I've been using a black Sharpie marker pen that uses more permanent ink than their regular kind. It's labeled INDUSTRIAL Super Permanent Ink, "formulated for industrial, laboratory, and commerical use". I label my orchids with it and my oldest label, about 7 years old, is still legible. The label sits within the potting media so it gets and stays wet, fertilized, etc. Labels written with a regular Sharpie fades in a year or two.

Another vote for china markers. The writing is much darker than pencil, they never fade a bit and usually outlast the tags which tend to break after a few years in the sun.

Scarleta I've used a paint pen also, I haven't had it on tags for than 1 season so don't know how it will stand up.

I should have used something besides a regular sharpie to mark bulbs I potted last fall. All of the tags are faded out by now and I can't read them....I meant to plant them but our spring was so wet I didn't get them all in the ground.
