What's better a Rose, Climbing Blue Moon OR Vine, Yellow Trumpet

Hi there,

I am not sure what you mean by 'blue moon', do you mean the annual blue morning glory vine that you seed each year?

As for yellow trumpet, campsis radicans, they really aren't hardy in your zone (at least in my experience).

A climbing rose is a nice idea, but probably wouldn't get tall enough plus they love full sun, which you don't have.

Maybe research/check into these vines...

dropmore honeysuckle: This one might do okay in shady conditions, mine at the side of the house gets 2 hours of sun and still blooms.

virginia creeper: doesn't really bloom (not showy blooms) but dependable and can fill up a lattice.

Also maybe check out hops vines and clematis such as jackmanii. usually they like sun but my clematis does okay in a part shade.

Forget the rose idea not enough sun.Even if there was enough, its hard to find one that would survive winter in your zone.Go for a vine of some kind...Good luck :-)

I live in zone 5. A friend of mine planted this next to her house along with climbing roses and Autumn Clematis years ago. BAD idea! It has grown underneath the foundation of her house and comes back vigorously every year despite her doing her best to uproot it. This vine indeed thrives very well in zone 5 and def will become invasive. It will take time, but it will "Creep Out" and show up everywhere lol. The lady across the street has two trained around old clothes line poles to make "trees". They are beautiful. People stop all the time to ask her what kind of trees those are. She regularly mows around them and does not have an issue with them getting to full growth in the grass around the original plantings. We do tend to have unseasonably warm winters at times. Perhaps that contributes, but be careful with this one! You've been warned! lol

I planted fig vine to cover cement block wall many, many years ago and now have had to take it all down. The reason, the roots are traveling to house, etc. and uprooting cement walkways. The roots have grown to at least four or five inches circumference (sp??). What a bummer. This plant covers everything. All plants near it were being covered. Planters beware....think ahead about 10 or 15 years.

Your probably bang on with the cedars however they will take a long time to fill in an area. They don't require a lot of work compared to a vine generally speaking. I certainly don't recommend vines to fill your need because the privacy they give would generally be subject to the season. Below are some comments on the ones I have experience with. Most of the summer one of my chain link fences gets covered in Clematis Tangutica. I think it was called Clematis Bill MacKenzie. Its an amazing mess of yellow flowers. The nice thing with Bill MacKenzie was how fast it fills in during the spring over my other vines. I do have other clematis but nothing as bushy and filling as Bill MacKenzie. You could also look at Virginia Creeper but be careful as it can get out of control very fast. The neighbor behind our house has his crawling over his back fence snaking through the back lane and strangling parts of my garden. If you don't mind planting annuals every year you could try morning glories depending on the size / height of the area you want to cover. I've had good experience with morning glories all over my limited space. I'd seriously consider a long term investment though like cedars or some other type of bush. Evergreens for your area will give you all season privacy. Or if winter privacy isn't a big deal consider an edible bush like saskatoons. Well my 2 cents.

Not enough sun for the rose and being near a patio, beware the thorns; yellow trumpet creeper would take years to bloom; now I have a Clematis 'Claire de Lune' which was called 'Blue Moon' and its absolutely gorgeous, blooming right now. That'd be my choice. If I have a pic I'll post it.

Thorn_grower--although its not a solution for szychowski due to the poor sunlight, I just wanted to interject that there are a few climbing roses that would do just fine in zone 3-4. William baffin is climbing rose that does just fine in in my zone 2b garden. Its over 6 feet tall with no winter damage to any of the tall canes without any protection. Another climbing rose hardy to zone 2 is John Davis and John Cabot is hardy to zone 3-4.

Szychowski, here's a pic of my Blue Moon Clematis. Mine is in afternoon sun so the flowers fade a bit but still beautiful. This pic was taken 1 year after planting.

Yellow trumpet..is that the same as hummingbird vine? With orange flowers?
I've got 2 growing and neither receiving much sun..say, medium light, and like you, one is blocked by a darn maple. Yet, the hummingbird vine grows each spring, and sends out big orange flowers during summer.
I'm not sure which zone this plant grows in, but do know it will live even if conditions are below 0. Plus, mulching in autumn helps a lot..Toni

Well thanks for pointing that out to me bemidjigreen, i grow quite a few explorers myself, and they all come thru the winter wonderfully, always something new to learn.. have a nice day..:-)

OK......I know this post is old but thats kind of what I'm hoping for. I got the blue moon climbing rose and was wondering if you planted them and how they turned out?
