A Question from Down South

I've got a question that has been bugging me. There appears to be a lot of trees and shrubs from Japan and China that thrive in both the Southeast (I live in Georgia) and the Northwest. However, there are almost no plants from the Northwest that are grown here in the South. I occasionally see an Oregongrape or an Alaska Cedar at the nurseries, but that is about it.

My question is if we can grow the same exotic trees/shrubs, why can't we grow plants from the Northwest? I understand the differences in climate, weather, etc., but it seems that there should be more cross-over plants. Why can't I grow a big leaf maple?

Ron B, if you're out there, you probably have an answer.
