Just received the latest Hosta Journal. I joined the American Hosta Society because of glowing descriptions of the journal on this forum. It doesn't disappoint - a thoroughly professional publication in every respect. And filled with some serious eye candy - love those collections of mice and other minis.(Of course I read it for the articles!!)

And the included membership directory is rather fascinating as well - there are members in unexpected states like Alaska and Texas, and in 21 other countries.

I'm certainly renewing my membership.

Hey Jan.On are you in the OHS as well? I have older issues of the Hosta Journal....if you want some winter reading. How many hostaholics are there in Eastern Ontario? Can you private message me?

There are a few of us in the Ottawa Valley of eastern Ontario ... and with both Budd's and the Rideau Woodlot Ramble Nurseries featuring a huge variety of cultivars, there must be countless other Valley hostaholics that dont actively post to this forum.

justterrilynn, sadly the image came from Pinterest, via Tumblr. And Tumblr makes it virutally impossible to track photos back to their source. Chispa and I went there! It was a fun visit. The house was so minimalist that you had to either go outside or through the master to get to the kids’ bedroom. so they definitely tried to minimize square footage. thanks for the article, just loved the overview of the case study program. I think it’s funny that none of the houses ended up being mass produced or affordable. But the lessons learned certainly influenced a generation of homes!

The duration of ice (1 full week), then snow that lasted a week and brought a significant temperature decrease ( down to 7 degrees) was unexpected. The home we are renting has a two car garage that holds belongings that did not fit in storage. It also houses one of our vehicles... The vehicle we left outside, we learned recently, has some wiring damage because under the hood is where squirrels carrying acorns took refuge. There was no reasonable space to place the roses in the garage. The snow fell and we awakened to roads that were unsafe for travel and most stores closed ( no power)... I lost roses that were gifted to me from a relative in Houston... Candice, Annie Laurie Mc Dowell and Black Magic, as well as others I received after going on wait lists prior to even moving here. Most can be replaced but others are gone, likely forever... I have selectively purchased roses here and there, but am trying to control myself. Our home should be completed sometime this Winter, and after that, we will be tasked with figuring out hardscaping and landscaping, so whatever I buy will reside in pots for a little while.

Jan, got the latest issue and the membership directory last week, but failed to open it ..... until your post here.

That was a couple of hours ago. Instead of playing my usual bedtime Mahjong on my tablet, I'll be scanning the membership directory. Hope I find more central Gulf Coast members.

I have been considering being a member of the AHS but haven't gotten around to it. Hearing about the Hosta Journal and being able to see a membership directory sounds really great. I had better get to it! I want to learn as much as I can about hostas, and the Journal would help in this regard. Back issues of the journal---I am wondering is there would be anyone willing to part with some of those? I don't know if I would be able to if I had any! I am in southern Ontario. Being a hostaholic is interesting---there is definitely a strong passion---it's just not easy to "turn it off." That's the hard part.

As for members in AK, take a close look at the U.S.D.A. Zone map for up there.

I think you'll be VERY surprised at the number of Zones found throughout that state, from the far bottom to the tippy top.

When one of my sisters lived in Anchorage we compared temperatures daily over several winters. I usually lost. From the lower panhandle up to there and a little beyond, an ocean current mitigates the temps.

The same thing is going on along the N.E. coast of the lower 48. Folk further north from my latitude who are along the east coast get the warming effect of the Gulf Stream.

I'm too far 'inland' to benefit from the moderation effects of the Great Lakes that surround me, and my altitude doesn't help either, except regards frost.

So called 'Micro Climates' are also interesting to consider. At our specific location, Hillbilly Ridge literally 'split' the storms coming out of the prevailing west and southwest so we get little if any of the rain in said storms. I've watched the radar for over 30 years now and it almost never fails. Neighbors 2 miles south and north get, say, an inch of rain; we get a trace or if lucky a tenth. Then again, because they're 'down in the valleys', they get frost, we dodge the bullet ;-)
