whats the native soil ...???

in my high drainage mineral sand.. i can do it.. with native soil also in the pot ...

i dont know if i would mix high peat potting media in a native soil ...

and i would not do it in clay ...

Describing the soil is nearly impossible. Everything else is clay. But this area was a dump 85 years ago with broken bottles and cans. For most of the past 85 years, stray rocks were thrown there from other nice flower beds. I only decided to try hosta there because I noticed visitors critically eyeing that area. Hosta are growing, though not thriving. All except Sun Power which seemed to be struggling. Earlier this summer I dug it, only to discover serious tree root competition. I then filled a big ceramic pot with compost, planted the hosta, and set the pot in the hole where I'd removed the hosta. Sun Power is much happier now. I'd really like it to survive the winter.

winter proof ceramic pot??? .. which means glazed inside and out.. or at least fired hot enough that it does not suck up moisture and crack in winter???

I have had Fire & Ice and a few other plants sunk into the ground for a few years and they've been fine. They're in 1 gallon nursery pots.

However, I have read that if you leave the bottom on the pots, you risk it holding water and rotting the crown. So, I guess if you're going to do it, don't do it with an expensive hosta!

Is it not true that the rim of the pot would lead to a water puddle over the crown at times, and that's why you should put pots on the side in cold zones?

berndnyz... yes, that is correct. The freeze-thaw cycle leads to snow melting, but the root ball still remaining frozen. Then the rim of the pot holds the water right on top of the crown, thus leading to rot. You should allow the root ball to freeze, THEN tip them. This will keep the potting medium from falling out.
