Combination of factors with annual weather being the most likely. Not every year is a good gardening year for any of us thanks to unusual weather patterns. Which is why it is so important to learn to monitor and note your local weather patters. You don't list your garden zone and Mass. has several ranging from 5b to 7a with very different planting dates. Your proper plant out date could be anywhere from mid-April to late May. See link below. Variety selection is another contributing factor. You only mention San Marzano but DTM (days to maturity or early, mid, or late season labels) apply to all vegetables. San Marzano is an 80-85 day, late-season variety. You may need to select early and mid-season varieties of things. lanted most of the seeds in Mid March Depending on your zone that may or may not be too late. But not everything get started at the same time. Eggplants and peppers require several more weeks to reach transplant size than tomatoes do. Squash works best direct seeded and doesn't tolerate transplanting well unless it is done before the 3rd true leaf develops. You don't mention anything about nutrients provided either as seedlings or when planted in the garden? Plants require feeding. Soil quality is yet another factor. So is watering regieme - most over-water and that causes root rot. Sun exposure? 8 hours per day. 6 hours minimum. Then there is the neglect/damage issue of your young seedlings you mention. One of the worst mistakes we can make is to start a bunch of seeds and then go on vacation or whatever as that is when they are the most vulnerable and require the most care. Well, it's the middle of September, the nights will drop below 70 and I can finally have decent zucchini again. Both new and cloned tomatoes are flowering, potatoes just went into the ground under mulch (knock on wood), super hot peppers are looking like the catalog pics finally, and those monstrous black and yellow grasshoppers are becoming scarce. Gotta go buy some stuff. Every year: mid September. Dues paid.

njoasis,there are at least 10 varieties of agave that can grow in zone 5,so in your area I'm sure there are several more very cool options and even the ones pictured would have a good chance(kept dry) with protection.(havardiana is another)I am growing parryi,tequila and americana which is the common blue colored agave you see in the s.w. like the one in the middle of T-heads pic, my Agave americana has grown 11 new leaves this year!probably more than any other plant,except yuccas,I am going to try a covered leaf pile(kept DRY) on my americana,you should try some of these they are very rewarding plants to grow!except maybe in the s.w.where they grow like weeds,thats where I got mine,someone was pulling their weeds.Here is a pic of the agave I will try to overwinter and a link to some other agave etc Here is a link that might be useful: Agave etc

Thanks seysonn, Dennis, salavene, Tom, NECM, Bill , Josh, jason, Grace, and Randal. Some of you are being too kind on my picture taking skills...LOL, but thank you all for the kind words. Seysonn: Yes. I'm talking Northern hemisphere...lol. Light and/or frost usually cuts my season towards the new year or so. Regarding yours, I'd say if you're getting ripe japs, the others aren't far behind. Hope you make it before it gets too chilly up there. Dennis: Yeah. Love that Poblano "tree." Caging it was a PITA though. Salavene: Nope. No dehydrator. All depends on the variety. Many thin fleshed i can air dry. Thick fleshed usually get a combination of air drying and a toaster oven that I set to 125F. Some varieties, like Ancho and Guajillo, like a bit of moisture left in them, so dehydrating might dry TOO much. Tom: tanks for the recipe. Not sure if it's something I'm looking for though. The ingredients on a bottle of Tapatio call for Water, Red peppers, salt, spices, garlic, acetic acid, xanthan gum, sodium benzoate as a preervative. I'm "guessing" Arboles and pequins for the peppers only because Cholula lists them on their bottles. I know the two are different but I'm guessing they might use the same peppers but the OTHER ingredients differ.. Just wish I could find more info on recipes for some of these iconic Picante sauces. eg., types of peppers, ferment, no ferment, fresh or dried, how MUCH garlic, and the elusive "spices." Bill: Sorry to hear about your Poblanos. From the looks of your pics though, looks like you still have more than enough to keep you happy for a little while. I think my Chilhuacles are from your stock... Thanks indirectly through Pam :) Let me know if you need some fresh seeds. Jason: I'm not sure if these peppers are something you're looking for. They're very, very mild. And they're more of a drying mole pepper than anything else. But, let me know if you want some seeds. Josh: Thanks. And Thanks for the seeds! I thought I had 2 Chocos and 2 red, but one of the chocos is actually a red. Only been 2 ripe chocos on that plant though. Randal: yep. It's a beast. I'm just glad it's not like some bells I've grown in the past -- grow real tall but produce very little. This guy puts out some pods! And like Dennis said, just keep them from frost and they'll keep trucking for a while. I've read where avocado and citrus growers wet their trees down to deal with frost. Very lush looking hosta!!! I'm glad they don't know when to quit, lol :-). Thank you for starting this thread, Jel48.

I had to stop counting at around 45 or so...I had a criteria I thought I should follow when selecting hosta that thought it was still summer...

- no discolouration due to approaching dormancy
- had yet to bloom
- late bloomers BUT had to have no signs of diminishing
- new flush of growth on otherwise summer-looking foliage

The "outstanding" leaders were: Lakeside Shore Master, Wolverine, Ginsu Knife, So Sweet and Plantaginea due to their near-perfection (no ratty holes or heat stress apparent). These deserve their own pics. So does "Guacamole Don" :-)

Some listed are still in the ground awaiting potting up for the impending move. I'm pooped from hauling pots around, so I'll post some pics and end my post by listing these IMO stellar performers "that still think it's summer" here in my zone 5, Ontario, Canada!

Leaf lover...gorgeous hosta pics...especially Francee and Guacamole...Awwww, let's face it...they are all super! ...how old is your GUac? Biggest specimen I've ever laid eyes on! Wow! My puny guy will be outstanding when he grows up!

josephines- my Guacamole was purchased in 2008. I bought 2 at the time from Walmart at only $6 a piece. They were only about 3-4 leaves when I got them. I had no idea at the time that they were gonna be giants - I wasnt a hostaholic yet. So I planted them at the base of a tri-color beech tree cuz I love hosta rings. I have never moved them or divided them. Even the picture does not show accurate scale. The mound is huge! It actually takes away from the beauty of my pink tree cuz you dont look at the tree, you Iook at the hosta. I dont feed them and sometimes dont supplement their water either. It is a tough-as-nails hosta that will make you glad you got one.

Leaflover...I'm so glad I asked you! Seeing is believing...the progression is phenomenal! Your GUac leaves look like they have greater substance than usual but it could just appear that way due to the darker green colour.

Don, doesn't that just do it for you? BTW...your Inniswood caught my eye, you enabler, you!

LL...it sure makes me crazy, knowing I have to wait at least, what....till spring? to have mine leap? lol. Just kidding around...but really drooling here!

I definitely noticed your exquisitely coloured and shaped Fagus as I have a propensity for ANY dark leafed plants but you're right...my eyes "boing-ed" out at that hosta-on-steroids specimen. Stunning. :-)

Just so we're clear...you're telling me that my humble version of Guacamole is REALLY gonna look like that any time soon???? Really? Promise? Lol

Don and Moc! Notice the two FAT seed pods hanging on the scape? Yepper, I just graduated from Kiddiegarden! Now I'm into another new realm....I don't think I'm ready yet, not by a long shot. I'm just gonna sit in my classroom seat and learn me some more!!

josephines: your little Guacamole will look like mine. Yours is actually bigger than mine was when I bought it. It grows fast so just start off planting it where you want to keep it and give it room. You have nice size on a couple of those leaves already. Next spring it will be the one to watch. I will be interested in seeing the growth next year - it will please you.

Until recently, most of my hostas still showed midsummer foliage. But, a touch of frost on consecutive nights a couple of weeks ago started the decline. Almost all show the telltale effects of freezing and the rapid onset of dormancy. Most nights now are fairly close to the freezing mark and the hostas seem to know ...

Looks like there are still a lot of happy hostas out there, getting in their last little bit of vacation, basking in the summer weather, before putting on their pjs for the winter season. My yard is a pretty good mix right now, of summer time attire and yellow getting ready to go to sleep attire. More yellow showing up practically every day! On the bright side, mother nature is really starting to put on a fall display in the trees! We've got lots of gorgeous yellow, orange, and red showing up, so always something to look at!
