Northwestern Gardening

SW Washington gardens

I am planning a trip in July from Portland to the SW Washington coast and over to Tacoma via Olympia, returning to Portland on I5 or ?. I would like to know if people have favorite botanic gardens, private gardens (open to the public), sculpture gardens or any garden related attractions in the general route described above? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated, as we are new to the NW area (ignore the nm for New Mexico, can't figure out how to change it). Thanks, Gord

In Tacoma there's Pt Defiance Park, a must - see. Very large municipal park, with a small zoo and aquarium (with beluga whales!), a large rose garden, a ferry terminal (I like to watch the ferries come and go) and lots of stuff to see and walk around in.

In Olympia there's Priest Point Park, nice, but a wooded waterside park more than a garden. The Capitol Campus is very nice but it's geared towards the late winter/early spring legislative season so not much to see in summer. There are lots of memorials if you're into that kind of thing - WW1, WWII, Korean War and the Vietnam War. The new Law Enforcement Memorial has a great view of the area including the Black Hills, Olympic Mtns and Puget Sound. The neighborhood around the Capitol Campus has some very nice gardens but none open to the public. I do like to walk around and look at people's front yards though. But I live here so it's not a journey for me. There's also a small but nice Japanese garden next to City Hall on Plum St. Percival Landing, on the waterfront, is nice with small plantings in boxes and you should walk it if you're in town. Olympia isn't much of a gardener's destination.

A bit farther north from Tacoma is the Rhododendron Species Foundation Garden in Federal Way. None of the rhodies will be in bloom of course but they have all the stuff that grows with rhodies in their native habitat as well, and just plain a very nice garden, and the Pacific Rim Bonsai Display as well.

That's sweet, Roseless, thanks. I've read that some people in southern California do well with Ambridge, so maybe it is a combination of heat and humidity that it doesn't do well with. This is its third summer. So far this year, it has done beautifully. I deadheaded the blooms today and there are maybe 4 leaves with problems but it is adding more leaves and buds. Overall it looks really good. I tried adding blood meal this year during its first flush. Last year there were a few more problems. I am not sure if the better performance is the better weather, the blood meal or whether it's just a little older. We've had more sunny days this year; last summer's grey and gloom lasted for almost the entire season. I think total there were about 3 weeks that could be considered 'summer.' Much sunnier this year! The new foliage colors and the buds and blooms really are striking together, I think. Thanks for your kind comments. Gean

I am totally looking forward to this and planning my offerings. In my past life, I was a serious hosta collector (ie, hosta snob) and traveled down to Plant Delights annually. Then came the divorce (a good thing) and the big dig and the double relocation......I could be bringing a $50 plant or a $5 plant....my priorities have changed and life is too short to figure it out. I am an impatient gardener....I want to try everything and it's killing me that I am starting all over again - I miss the mature garden...... I am fortunate I brought some of my garden with me (it was in the PSA, lol) and fellow gardeners (some complete strangers) are the most generous people I have ever met. And because of the generosity afforded me, I want that mature garden so I can pay it forward, again and again. I was upset that I couldn't attend the GW swap back in May.....but I wasn't ready mentally or physically....This event fits my mood and the amount of time required is perfect, even with looking up a few Latin names! Thanks for posting this.....now off to see how to get to R Street from the New York Avenue entrance....it's easy to drive in circles at that place.

Richard, come join us on the Northwest Gardening forum! The PNW offers a rather unique gardening environment that is not easily found elsewhere in this country. And while I encourage you to participate in whatever forums pique your interest, sometimes the very generalized information found there is not all that applicable to gardening here, for example, growing tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and their cousins. Conditions for growing these successfully here are somewhat limiting :-) Most of the regular participants on the Northwest gardening forum are very generous and helpful with their advice and experience. Some not quite so much :-) There are even a couple of regulars that live in your general area (Olympia/South Sound) and grow a lot of edibles, so a great source of very local information.

Thank you for your input. We will definitely go to Pt.Defiance Park and also check out the Capital if time allows.

Apart from the remaining native vegetation the most interesting stuff at Point Defiance is the big planted trees (see Van Pelt, Champion Trees of Washington State) and the exotic plantings inside the zoo. The native garden near the zoo is also noteworthy.

I have some stops for you as you head south from Olympia.

1. Visit Faerie Gardens -- a nursery with a large demonstration garden -- off I-5 in Tumwater (just south of Olympia).

2. Get off I-5 at Longview and cross over the Columbia to go to Rainier, Oregon. Take Highway 30 back to Portland.

3. In Scappoose, Oregon, visit Joy Creek Nursery. They're up on a hillside and have a huge demonstration garden.

4. On the way back to Portland, go to Sauvie Island and check out Cistus Nursery, one of the best nurseries in the Pacific Northwest.

I've been to Pt. Defiance. I have wanted to go back for years. It is lovely, the zoo and gardens.

Thank you one and all, this was the input I was hoping for! Looks like we will make more than one trip north, but that's why we left the desert Southwest...needed to see some green. Helictro (may I call you that for short?),your blog will be a great resource!
