Hey-J wanting to know what one of your hostas is

In your second grouping of pictures in the Sept 1st thread, your photo of June (pictured in may) what is the hosta behind to the right of it? Appears to have cream margin/bluish centre in the pic? I LIKEY and I should probably know what it is and I will LOL if I already have it in its baby state!!!!

It was also my one and only order from Arbor day. I do still have a couple red maples that were free still going and 4 of the 6 viburnum dentatum's are going strong. The drought helped eliminate 1 and my dad ran over the other with a lawnmower and it never recovered. I actually am very fortunate I had so many failures from AD and Nature Hills. I have totally redesigned the layout and have a much more diverse plant make up than I would have had if they had all made it. The live oak, sycamore, and cottonwood from NH were the first trees I planted ever (in June bareroot!) and still give me the most pleasure when I have time to admire them :) John

LOLOLOL---Dave you ARE the best! None of you will believe this, but I was at our favorite source for hosta around here and picked up another 'June' because it seemed to have coloration patterns similar to Dave's that I have lusted after for years after seeing it in his collection. I've NEVER seen one as well marked as his. In fact, it is a well-known secret, that he has a secret forumula for growing the most fabulous hosta around these parts!! On the way home, I was thinking--Gee, I hope he didn't just dig up and throw his 'June' away, knowing that since the loss of some of his big trees he was not so excited about trying to grow hosta in the sun. I continued to reminisce how gorgeous it was! I got home, dropped my handbag on the chair, let the dogs out and went to the bedroom, only to hear the doorbell ring! I thought "Who in the world?" I heard Steve (hubby) laughing and saying, wait till Janice sees you!" I came out to, "Guess who's here?" There stood my ole' Hosta-buddy, Dave, whom I've not seen in at least two years (he lives about 45 mins. away) with a bag in his hand. Of course I hugged him and told him how I'd just bought a 'June' (not as nice as his) and was thinking about him and his spectacular specimen. I told him it wouldn't be as nice as his and he announced that I had one like his NOW!! He held up the bag and there was a VERY GENEROUS portion of the one I'd just been thinking about and coveting! (shame on me) Dave--I LOVE YOU!! I say this in earshot of my Steve so he is in approval. We have missed him so much. He's one of the best people on here, folks!!! We always have such a good time with him and his wife--laughing our heads off all the time. So--the mission is accomplished!!! He found me, by just driving up to my door and now I have a 'June' to return to the nursery for something else! So that's the end of this story 'and they lived happily ever after with a gorgeous 'June' in their garden'! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Dave!!!! Can't wait to get together with you and Renee--hopefully soon!!! btw, Dave--you won't BELIEVE I'm still buying lysimachia to plant in my garden beds! I love the stuff and I know you hated it and threw tons of it out, and eradicated as much of it as you could from your garden(I was shocked to see he'd been doing that!). Hopefully I can keep mine confined though I admit it does like to stretch a toe out into the lawn once in a while--or more like all 10 toes every Spring. I just dig it up and plant it where I want it. I started to buy some at the nursery today, but it was $6.95 for a small (what they call) quart! I think I can do better!

I agree--it is a dilemna! I am not what is known, by some, "a whacko enviromentalist" but I do have reasonable concerns (not unreasonable fear)! While, statistically, we are living longer, we are also dealing with what seems like ever increasing incidents of cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's and the like! What is causing these? Boiling water kills--no doubt and I don't like knowing it is also killing earthworms and other microscopic beneficials in my garden. But, I have a very strong aversion to the chemicals. I won't say I'll NEVER use them--I just hope I won't have to even consider their use. I don't condemn those who do, and do it with caution, but, I just have some concern over using them routinely and without any thought as to their over-all impact to the individual, wildlife, pets, children and the garden as a whole! I do not wholeheartedly believe the marketing information from businesses, whose advertising is a crucial aspect of their ability to sell their products. We are no longer a culture that prides itself on moral integrity, forthrightness, honesty and common decency---especially if it impacts the profit margin, negatively! "Somethin's wrong with the world today..."! Back to tossing those mosquito *donuts* in my bird-baths! Gulp!!! Yep--it's a dilemna, for sure!

Oh YES--I remember that one--I loved it SO MUCH! Unfortunately it got severely damaged with that year the Spring went *early-tropical* on us and I moved the remaining 3 eyes out and to the back of the yard and replaced it with 'Titanic'! Frankly--I see NO difference between the two and the 3-eyed SOA (in the back) is doing fine, too, though not multiplying at all! The leaves are just HUGE, actually, bigger than the Titanic but, again, it was a weird Spring this year for one in a barrel!!! The SOA is in the ground, which usually makes them larger, I think! Here are two pix from this Spring, after a pelting of hail! Some of the warped looking leaves were concerning to me (being a sport of S & S) but, we did have another odd Spring this year!! I'll have a critical eye on it next year, too!

Whats a little extra work on Labour Day eh...haha. Its the first picture in the second bunch of pictures half way through the thread. Hey-'sensi'! That one is 'First Frost'! Yeah--I love that one! It's fast becoming a 'favorite'!!!

Kinda startling to sign on and see my name at the top of the heap!! LOL But--it did get my attention!! :o))

Thats another reason I did it on a separate post cuz I did want to get your attention ;>) You are going to laugh at me as I was going to buy that one on Saturday when I brought home my load, but decided on El Nino and Blue Ivory instead. It really bites to have limited space...I was trying NOT to have too much of the same and passed up adding the first frost.....ahah I don't care i NEED IT NOW...Its on my list, it just needs to go in a different garden lol

The thing I like about FF is that the margins remain creamy rather than going to white. Others
prefer the reverse but I'm not into the stark white edges, usually! :o) I think 'EN' starts white and stays
white! I'm thinking 'BI' may do the creamy margin, as well! I don't have one so can't say for sure!

I think you'll like FF--not to further 'enable' you or anything--I mean I would NEVER want to do that! hehehe

I can't speak from experience, but this is what it says on the 'hosta direct' website re: BI "Earlier in the season, the leaves have a darker blue center and a thick creamy white margin". Mid season the margins bleach to white (with appropriate sunlight) and the center of the leaves turn a blue-green hue.

Not sure mine will go through the change, unless 1-2 hours/day of sunshine would be enough....time will tell. Right now the margins are so eeny meeny you can hardly see them :

I have FF and EN in a row in the same raised bed, separated by June Fever and flanked by Olympic Sunrise - all from the Halcyon family... they look great together. FF and EN are different enough that those who don't know hostas don't realize how closely related they are...

In the pic before your dog, what is the one in the bottom R?
Last pic of the first group, the one in the plant stand is?

Did you make the planter with the rounded timbers? I want one!!! If you can share some tips on how that was done if you know, I'll get out ma tools!

Okay, Jean--I'll try to do this--I'm getting dizzy, again!! LOL The one on the bottom right
(pic before 'guardian' dogs) is 'Emerald Ruff Cut'!

The next one, in the plant stand is 'Pineapple Upside Down Cake'! Pretty isn't it!!!

Now the planter, with the rounded timbers (landscape timbers?)--which pic. is that one, Jean?

Oh, and I have a much better pic. of the heuchera, 'Obsidian' (wish I hadn't posted the other previous ones):

My section of garden that I put all my new hostas in (what a busy day saturday was...lol) is long probably say bout 50 feet and its only bout 3 feet wide....if that big ole double wide gate to gain access to the backyard wasn't there, it would be a whole different garden lemme tell ya and I'd have LOTSA room...lol So I will most likely need to keep all in check in a few years time anyway.

Along the back of the garden in my more heavily shaded side of the garden (I really could only technically on the large/medium scale only put 5 since I wanted to put small ones in front of them following the flow of my mulch/rock curve with some ornamental grass and coral bells.

I placed Blue Ivory/Queen of the Seas/Thunderbolt/Love Pat and the El Nino.

You see the pattern...varigated/solid/varigated/solid etc...I should ripped the central air conditioner out...roflol....that woulda gave me room for one more solid and another varigated...tee hee

The other side of my garden on the sunnier side has my Liberty, Pauls Glory and Dream Weaver in the back.

All my smaller hostas and companion planting are in the front section.

I'm super happy with how it turned out and can't wait for everything to grow up a little

...Years ago I haphazardly overplanted my perennial beds and had a nightmare on my hands....so this time around with the redo I seem to be obsessed with planning...lol

Okay, Jean--gotcha!! Yes, we built that one! In fact, we have beds built up in several areas using
landscape timbers! That is the tallest of them all, though! I line the inside with 'tar paper' or roofing
paper as some call it, except for the bottom! That way, the moisture stays around longer!! :o)

Since our planting medium, in and of itself is almost solid clay (is that possible?) I like to build
up beds where I can have a good start with some better stuff mixed in with the clay, which is not a bad
thing to have--with all the minerals etc. but the soil is much easier to work with, when good compost and
mulched yard waste are mixed in, or at least added on top!!!

I've learned that even putting compost on top of the clay, is sufficient, since the earth worms, other organisms
and bacteria will do the work of pulling it down and incorporating it all into the clay making it more workable,
in a relatively short time!

Sweet Janice... how fitting. The dog house needs a new roof and the part I am needing is tar paper! LOL Funny how things happen. Guess I'll just go buy a full roll now! That is a super idea! I'm fortunate to be on farming ground here, so my soil is pretty wonderful.

Did you predrill holes in the timbers and screw/nail them? I'm not a construction guru but I'll do my darndest. I did get most of the tools outta the divorce (he wasn't happy tho!) I know this is kinda backwards... but I gotta figure out where I can work something like this in!

LOL Jean! How convenient--get it all done with the tar paper, and a whole roll could come in very handy!!

We just pound those really long (5") nails or spikes they sell to do the job--specific to landscape timbers.
You can find them in the nail dept. of Lowes, Home Depot, etc.

Just try to keep the timbers level, even if you have to dig down for the first row a bit. They will
look MUCH BETTER if they are!
