hey_j, I tried to send you an email, but something didn't work so I guess I'll have to do it this way.

Oh well, others maybe could benefit from this info.

I had to order a couple of hostas after seeing your pics of plants that you got from Hilltop Farms. I really like the idea of receiving plants in the pot of dirt that they'd been growing in. I'm happy with their prices. I ordered Gypsy Rose and Grand Tiara.

I had a long conversation with the owner, Oscar, about Foliar Nematodes and he told me to buy some

Merit .5 Systemic Insecticide Granules.

Oscar told me that will do the trick.

I remember last summer you had said that you had a

nematodes problem too. Well, just thought I'd pass along what Oscar had told me. He told me that I needed to put it on now. I ordered a 30# bag of it from a place in Mass called Primary Product. It cost $98.99 plus $12.95 for P&H.

I just applied it a couple of hours ago. To apply it, Oscar told me to put on some gloves and just throw it onto the hostas, then really drench the soil with water. (doing that right now with the hose/sprinkler) If I remember right those Nematodes start showing their damage in July. Sure hope this stuff works, but Oscar swears by it. He says that he knows people that have had great success with it.

BTW, I told him about the beautiful pics that you posted on this forum after receiving your hostas from him. I told him that you gave his business some great free adertising. LOL

Just thought I'd let you know what Oscar had recommended to kill those nematodes. He wasn't impressed with the Zerotol that I was using last summer. (Neither was I) Oscar said that I needed a systemic insecticide.

Merit is made by Bayer and Bayer list it as a product for grubs, not nematodes, but Oscar says it'll work on nematodes. I sure hope so.

Great information, Sassy!!! I am definitely saving it! So far, I've seen no more evidence from the original scare
of a couple of summers ago, and it remains to be seen on the most recent one last summer.

I pour boiling water all over the area where the 'victim' was planted and so far, I'm good!!! I only have two areas
of my garden where I had the pleasure of seeing infected plants---time will tell!!!

I think, I MAY have an advantage to non-infected hosta being in containers and barrels! Again, time will tell! I still won't even share
a piece of hosta from within 10 ft. either side of where I found a plant with them, just to be safe for others! Right now, there's not
much sharing going on, on my end, with my plantings being still young and a couple of my hosta I won't share from because it takes
so long for them to reach maturity and I'd at least like to see how they can be!

Hi Safariman, What I did was to set up a little area on the other side of the yard - out of sight from the other chickens. I put together a makeshift cone, which was basically a bleach bottle with the neck enlarged and the bottom cut out. I took out each chicken (BTW they were about 9 weeks old and were absolutely huge), and talked to them and tried to comfort them as I walked across the yard. I then took hold of their feet and slowly lowered them until they were upside down and seemed calm. I put their head on the ground, put the broomstick just behind their head and put my feet on either side - I tried to do this quickly because they seemed a little alarmed. Then I just pulled. It takes an amazingly small amount of tension for their head to come off (yuck). Anyway, as you can imagine there was quite a bit of spurting and wing flapping. I held them down while they flapped and then as soon as I could, I lowered them into the cone so they could continue to twitch without my involvement. It was best for me to walk away at that point since it was a little hard to watch. Anyway, the skinning was easy - I just took the thighs and breasts ( and livers). I didn't fast them because I hate for anything to go hungry, but I didn't have any problems with the full crop getting accidentally pierced. It peeled away from the breast fairly easily. As far as messiness, it really wasn't bad. I skinned them on newspaper. There weren't a bunch of feathers floating around or anything. I'm sure that plucking and eviscerating would have been a lot harder work. It took me about 2 hours to slaughter and skin all 7. Just some advice - make sure your table is high enough because otherwise it's hell on your back! Sorry this is turning into a novel. Let me know if you have any other questions. Audrey

Oh hey guys! Thank you for thinking of me! Yes, life has been a little "tough" these past weeks but the bright spot is our new grand-boy, "Cody"! Mom, Dad, grandparents and baby are doing just great!! I haven't been on the computer much, partly due to an unstable shoulder socket, caused by a tear in the Labrum and a ligament, that needs surgery! "Mousing" especially causes me some difficulty so I've avoided it! I miss you guys and hopefully, when the surgery is done, I'll be able to be back aggravating you more then!!! I was keeping up with what posting there was awhile, even though I wasn't posting, but these past two weeks I've had a death in my family and some friends lost their 30 year-old only daughter, a week ago, caused by severe complications following giving birth, 4 1/2 months ago and these sadnesses have kept me otherwise occupied! There are other "stressers" but we have SO MUCH to be thankful for and I am constantly reminded of that! Thank you so much for the personal emails checking up on me! You all are the greatest!!! LOLOLOL---Dave you ARE the best! None of you will believe this, but I was at our favorite source for hosta around here and picked up another 'June' because it seemed to have coloration patterns similar to Dave's that I have lusted after for years after seeing it in his collection. I've NEVER seen one as well marked as his. In fact, it is a well-known secret, that he has a secret forumula for growing the most fabulous hosta around these parts!! On the way home, I was thinking--Gee, I hope he didn't just dig up and throw his 'June' away, knowing that since the loss of some of his big trees he was not so excited about trying to grow hosta in the sun. I continued to reminisce how gorgeous it was! I got home, dropped my handbag on the chair, let the dogs out and went to the bedroom, only to hear the doorbell ring! I thought "Who in the world?" I heard Steve (hubby) laughing and saying, wait till Janice sees you!" I came out to, "Guess who's here?" There stood my ole' Hosta-buddy, Dave, whom I've not seen in at least two years (he lives about 45 mins. away) with a bag in his hand. Of course I hugged him and told him how I'd just bought a 'June' (not as nice as his) and was thinking about him and his spectacular specimen. I told him it wouldn't be as nice as his and he announced that I had one like his NOW!! He held up the bag and there was a VERY GENEROUS portion of the one I'd just been thinking about and coveting! (shame on me) Dave--I LOVE YOU!! I say this in earshot of my Steve so he is in approval. We have missed him so much. He's one of the best people on here, folks!!! We always have such a good time with him and his wife--laughing our heads off all the time. So--the mission is accomplished!!! He found me, by just driving up to my door and now I have a 'June' to return to the nursery for something else! So that's the end of this story 'and they lived happily ever after with a gorgeous 'June' in their garden'! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Dave!!!! Can't wait to get together with you and Renee--hopefully soon!!! btw, Dave--you won't BELIEVE I'm still buying lysimachia to plant in my garden beds! I love the stuff and I know you hated it and threw tons of it out, and eradicated as much of it as you could from your garden(I was shocked to see he'd been doing that!). Hopefully I can keep mine confined though I admit it does like to stretch a toe out into the lawn once in a while--or more like all 10 toes every Spring. I just dig it up and plant it where I want it. I started to buy some at the nursery today, but it was $6.95 for a small (what they call) quart! I think I can do better!

frankly .. as a starter camera.. the cheapest one you can afford .... like my 67$ aldi special .... has worked great for 5 years ... when you get unhappy with it... move up in scale... there are a multitude of cameras in the $100 range that should be just fine... set your $ limit.. or they will go crazy recommending very expensive cameras ... ken

I have sworn of systemics too. Thankfully, neither my family nor I was hurt by them, but the potential is certainly there.

After a single application of (touted as "safe" around pets & kids) Bayer 3 in 1 to a single rose bush and watching the ground quickly get covered in writhing earth worms (they all died a few minutes later), I decided that anything that could wipe out the population of all the good stuff in the soil in a single application was definitely not going to be used anywhere in my gardens. I would rather have a few blackspotted leaves (roses) or use the boiling water method than add toxic chemicals to my home environment.

But that is just me......

It is a problem! Even spraying for slugs with ammonia and water (into the crown and ground around it) brings the worms up writhing! I am sure boiling water can kill them too. There is not any good solution. I don't want to live with nemotodes, and I don't want to hurt the environment.

I agree--it is a dilemna! I am not what is known, by some, "a whacko enviromentalist" but I do have reasonable concerns
(not unreasonable fear)!

While, statistically, we are living longer, we are also dealing with what seems like ever increasing incidents of cancer,
Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's and the like! What is causing these?

Boiling water kills--no doubt and I don't like knowing it is also killing earthworms and other microscopic beneficials in my garden.
But, I have a very strong aversion to the chemicals. I won't say I'll NEVER use them--I just hope I won't have to even consider their use.

I don't condemn those who do, and do it with caution, but, I just have some concern over using them routinely and without any thought as to
their over-all impact to the individual, wildlife, pets, children and the garden as a whole! I do not wholeheartedly believe the marketing information
from businesses, whose advertising is a crucial aspect of their ability to sell their products. We are no longer a culture that prides itself on moral
integrity, forthrightness, honesty and common decency---especially if it impacts the profit margin, negatively!

"Somethin's wrong with the world today..."!

Back to tossing those mosquito *donuts* in my bird-baths! Gulp!!! Yep--it's a dilemna, for sure!
