Moni, I had a lot of fungus gnats in my garden and did a little research on them. I expect your soil is too wet and the larva are hatching out now. I think the best thing may be to let the soil dry fairly well before you water again. The larvae don't live in dry soil, so that will break their life cycle. as far as what to spray inside someone else should tell you that. I sprayed some of DW's plant spray on the plants that we brought in, but some people don't like to spray inside.

The larvae I dug out of the ground died In about 3 min. of strong sunshine, but I doubt you could heat and UV rays from an inside light to kill them, they pretty much have to die from dehydration. (They are very small and hard to see).From what I have read they are not harmful to humans, other than driving you crazy swatting at them.

Larry, my basil just about died... because I quit watering... and I just decided Wednesday when it is supposed to be a bit warmer everything will be taken out... and I will spray. I won't worry about the basil and the spray.. I will just not use any for a while.

Next time I will definitely spray a week before bringing plants in.

Some people kill them with hairspray, I think. Also try putting a small amount of vinegar in a glass or jar and cover the top with plastic wrap, but prick some small holes in the plastic wrap. They will go in for the vinegar and can't find their way out.

Moni - equal parts of sugar, apple cider vinegar and water in a jar. Mix it up and set it somewhere where where the smell will attract them but not you. ha!

For example - I seem to have trouble with them in the spring in the kitchen. I use this recipe in a canning jar and I sit up up on top of the fridge. Dump and re-mix every 3 or 4 days. It's worked for me the last several years since I moved out here to the "sticks".

You can buy the Bt 'israelensis" sold for mosquite larvae control and use it. It kills the gnats. It comes both in mosquito dunks or in small bits. You can either break up a mosquito dunk and soak a little of it in water and pour that water onto the soil, or soak some bits in water the same way. There also now are some granular Bti forumulations made and marketed specifically for fungal gnat control.

While a product like this might not be needed often, it can be a lifesaver for someone with soil that stays wet from heavy rainfall in spring or summer.

Jo, I like the looks of the traps. I have a ton of fungus gnats in my north garden because it is so wet. I will make a trap or two just to see what happens, thanks for the info.

Well, I finally gave bleach a try. It seemed to slow them down, but then I had another crop hatch.

Now, I have used bleach water again, and again, with about a week between the last two times.

I haven't seen any today. I might have gotten them.

But they sure were a nuisance.
