pecan shell mulch

I've heard that slugs and snails don't like pecan shell mulch. I did a web search and it's available locally. I've also heard that egg shells are a deterrent (sp?). I tried egg shells once, but that was before I figured out to put my pots on pot feet. The egg shells were pretty ugly. (My neighbor suggests I spray paint them black.)

Have you tried either?

I'm working up my courage to try hostas in the ground again. According to a couple of articles in the paper recently, people are growing hostas-in ground and getting some good results.

(They're so easy in pots, though!)

AND, those folks are the kind of gardeners, who get articles written about them in the paper.

(This will require a lot of thought.)

I would say anything sharp or porous will deter slugs.. ..everything works to a certain extent... multiple tactics work best... I've never heard of pecan shell mulch.. but then again I'm a little green... I know pine straw/needle mulch, lava rock, egg shells, copper, coffee grounds, diatomaceous earth(food grade), spot spraying with a solution of 90 percent water 10 percent ammonia, fermenting traps, beer traps, and both types of commercial slug baits all work to a certain extent. If you have a major infestation... and you are entirely concerned, OCD, the best thing for slug removal IMHO is removing all mulch, leaf litter, rocks and anything solid they could move over or hide under... basically down to bare soil.. and keep the soil cultivated... this gives them nothing to hide under during the day so the slugs have another area to hide in... and the cultivation and removal of mulch and litter will detroy eggs....though one time can't guarantee all eggs and slugs are dealt with...
Water only in the mornings and only often enough to keep the top foot of soil moist....
We all unfortunately have to deal with these little devils.... Its the number one enemy lol... buy from reputable sources and you can avoid foliar nematodes and HVX... Slugs are a different story....
If you like pots.. keep them in pots...I tried a few in pots this year and I didn't care nothing for it... get them established in the ground and you can grow them in more sunlight and water them less... therefore they grow bigger and stronger, faster....plus I'm not a huge fan of potting media...I feel like I should repot potted perennials every year.. which is a hassle...not to mention having to water every other day....I would recommend to anyone to put their hostas in the ground...I know you are from TX and you might be restricted to a bit deeper shade then some of us from Zone 6 or up... and the fact yours are in pots lets you move them in and out of more sun for them to find their happy place...
I'd be curious to hear someone from TX with experience with Texan Slugs chime in...

I don't know that juglone qualifies as an oil. Dave has the best idea....use the hulls on an area where there are no plants of any kind. That's probably even true for the finished compost, if you want to be safe. There are a jillion lists of juglone sensitive plants....each seem to be different from the others. Best to be cautious.

I'd avoid any mulch made from whole trees ground down for mulch. That's the problem with the cypress, the swamps are being logged specifically to grind the trees into mulch. I was just reading about Louisiana allowing private landowners to clearcut their cypress stands at the same time the state is asking for billions of federal tax dollars to restore wetlands. It's positively insane; cypress swamps are known to protect against storms surges and presumably would be some of what would be restored at great expense to us federal taxpayers, while private landowners are profiting from creating the problem. But, any other wood mulch created from whole trees will be just as bad, like the cedar listed. Why cut down a perfectly good tree just to make mulch out of it?? Mulches created from mill waste are fine; mulches from ground up trimmings are fine; mulches from bark are fine so long as the tree was being cut primarily for the wood and the bark is a byproduct. What species of tree will be best depends on what grows locally. Cypress mulch might be fine if you live right next to a cypress mill. I live in Doug-fir and western hemlock territory, so that's what I get. In California, redwood bark and eucalyptus mulch are readily available, but it would be silly to ship them elsewhere. Texas has lots of oak and pine, which we don't have here. Texas should have lots of local pecans too I would think. If I lived in pecan growing territory, I'd use it. I used to live in California, and I used mulches made from rice hulls as it's one of the major crops in NorCal, and makes a good cheap mulch. As far as helping the soil, you want something that will break down and add organic matter - compost, leaf mold, tree trimmings. Barks and woods don't really add much, they're used where people don't want it breaking down.

Tilled in the paper would not be mulch and would not do much to block weeds (although it might have other benefits depending on what you are planning to do with your soil and what your soil is like). I have successfully used shredded paper as mulch but it helps to wet it a bit or put something on it to weigh it down so it doesn't blow away. Sometimes the shredded paper can turn into something like paper mache which does not breathe as well (although the "paper mache" doesn't happen to have done much, if any, harm in my projects). Newspapers or cardboard are a little better as weed blockers than shredded paper but since you have shredded paper to use give it a try or use a combination of the options.

Just wanted to offer an update... We ended up building a new pile when the leaves fell (mid-Dec.) that ended up being chopped grass & leaves with about 20% pecan shells, hulls & unripe nuts. This was in a 5-ft.-across baby pool with holes poked in the bottom, filled to about 4 ft. high. As of this week, the pile was only about 3 ft. tall, the bottom few inches is finished compost, but the rest of the pile was surprisingly dry. The pecan shells & hulls are definitely decomposing but still very recognizable. So I moved this pile to a new spot where it can be an open pile and mixed it with 5 bags of pine needles from a friend's yard, and a 55-gallon drum of starting-to-smell-funky weeds that I've been pulling the past few weeks. I'm going to leave this alone until next spring I think, probably depending on whether or not we get any rain this summer, and repurpose the baby pool yet again, which has given so much for the $10 investment. Actually did use it as a pool for 2 summers, and the past 4 years it has been my "cart" for gathering sticks before mowing. So easy to drag around. Then it hosted the compost pile this winter. Now I want to use it to mix some soil for repotting containers. It's cracked & parts of the edge are gone, but it keeps helping & helping & I keep REusing it.
