Piecrust

Hi Everyone!

I am going to move a small shrub to a sunnier location, I think it needs it. I want to put some hostas there, anchored by a tall, piecrust edged one. Any color, I am not picky about that.

I have a ginsu knife, but I am looking for something that mounds more than that, and taller. I would appreciate any suggestions from your favorites, and are there any duds I should stay away from?

Bev, 'Sea Octopus' has decent substance, but I think there's little that'll deter a determined rabbit. You're right, it's not a variety you see very often, I got mine in a local trade and while initially it was not what I'd expected/hoped for, it has certainly become a favourite because of the shape and vigour. It's a ready bloomer with rich purple flowers and it's very fertile. I seem to be at odds with the indicated blooming period from the registration for this cultivar, mine flowers considerably earlier than September, like mid-June, and sees a second flush in September. Given it's heritage, that's unusual and unexpected and perhaps what I have here is not as indicated. Oddly enough, my favourite yellow seedling from it, flowered mid-August last year, so, what's up with that? Take a look at the pix in the HL for this one, you'll see 2 seemingly very different forms, with the narrow-leafed ones from Patty Woodbury and Shauna Cannon being the ones I'd hoped to get, but the registration shows a much wider leaf (12x3) than what shows in those shots, which makes me wonder if those 2 are indeed the variety in question. Sherry, ask about Paul's Glory while you are at it.... I think Marilyn Monroe is gorgeous. With all the ripples, she shows her white petticoats and her softly pink petioles. Then for a real kick, she throws in those unique purple flowers in several shades. There is a lot of femininity in that hosta. Glad to see that Key Lime Pie looks so nice up in MN, Paul. The Squash Casserole from which it sported was bred for southern gardens, but they look great anywhere. I have almost all of those sports, I like to double down on something I know grows well for me. And, to cover the topic of a medium favorite piecrust hosta? Here is one of them, COLD HEART. It is rippled and serrated and this picture was taken 8/9/14. It is holding its nice colors I think. There is a touch of cool blue in the heart of the leaf, which gives its name meaning. I enjoy growing it. I also like Irish Luck, which may get a bit bigger than a smallish medium, but it is a fragrant hosta. Taken after dark on 5-24-14 so the shine is even more pronounced. I fell in love with the dark green. If you like a dark green shiny leaf that is definitely medium, then look at Candy Dish. It has the piecrust edge, the shine, the size, the dark green color. Just imagine there are no holes in the leaves....it has good substance, but I was beset with holes early in the spring. The photos in HostaLibrary will show you what you like best. Question on adding brown sugar to pie crust??

I'd suggest you look for a recipe that meets your needs rather than altering the recipe you have already used. There are all kinds of sweet pastry recipes (aka Pate Sucree) using both white and brown sugar, which have a texture more like crisp cookies. And there are recipes that incorporate yogurt, Greek yogurt or yogurt cheese (which is yogurt that has been drained of the whey for a certain amount of time to make it thicker), but are not necessarily considered sweet pastry. Many sweet pasty recipes also have an egg in them for additional structure from the egg protein. Brown sugar pastry is also much darker than using white sugar. Sugar wrecks gluten formation, and the addition of a lot of sugar can make the pastry somewhat "sandy" or "gritty". Adding a lot of sugar can make pastry nearly impossible to roll out. Pastry chefs consider sugar pastry or sweet crust (Pate Sucree) best used for tarts that do NOT contain a juicy filling because they absorb liquid into the crust quickly. Your filling may be too juicy. Maybe you would like this recipe made with wonton wrappers instead of pastry? Just a thought.... Check Martha Stewart recipes for starters, then go to the Food Network, and perhaps search for pastry for tarts. It's easier to find the wheel than to reinvent it, especially when it comes to pastry. What about Niagra Flaas or Fleet Week? I have neither but really want them both, especialy fleet week. Lakeside Surf Rider looks nice too.

Some good suggestions here. I won a section ribbon at the AHS convention in 2000 with one perfect Green Piecrust leaf, so I have a sentimental affection for it... but I'd have to say I think

Queen of the Seas is the class act in the blue category...

Niagara Falls in the green category... War Paint as an unusual entry, because you get the great color in spring and then for most of the season it becomes Niagara Falls...

Sea Gulf Stream is one of my favorites in the yellow, and Spartacus is supposed to be a green-centered version of it (mine are still young so I can't speak from experience) - the two might be nice together

Squash Casserole might not be exactly pie crust so much as ruffled, but it makes an exceptional, inexpensive, easy large low clump - and again, there are two sports that should look great with it - Key Lime Pie and Yesterday's Memories.

I'm going to second Jim's suggestions: Niagara Falls for green; Sea Gulf Stream for yellow; and Queen of the Seas for blue.

Journey's End and American Icon are variegated forms of Choo Choo Train, and are vigorous piecrust edged hostas. Spring Fling is like a giant Ginsu Knife, with wider leaves.
