Does anyone have any hebe cuttings available to share or to trade? I have been looking for some plants and have been unable to find but 4 varieties. I have named brugmansia plants I can offer to trade or will gladly pay for postage. Please e-mail me if you are interested.

Better, larger retail nurseries in the area are starting to offer much wider selections as these tough, attractive plants become more and more popular. Several Seattle-area nurseries offer a dozen or more species and cultivars but not always a full selection at all times. Cistus Nursery on Sauvie Island outside of Portland has a great selection, easily the best in the area.

There are hardy hebes. I grow H.rakainensis, H. ochracea 'James Stirling', H. annulata, H. buxifolia (3 varieties), H topiaria and H. 'Edinensis'. They grow very well, tho' they suffered some damage after their first winter outdoors. It is very important to keep them slightly dry during winter, and if there's no snow you have to give 'em a very good protection from dry cold winds. 3-ply remay will do. If there's just a thin layer of snow, gather as much the stuff as you can and cover your hebes good and proper. I live in 6A zone and we get really cold here like -15 F sumtimes -20F

mmmm, yes, I love this rose but it is not a formal rose by any means - think species and you are not far wrong. Sherry, having seen many pics of your lovely front garden, I would have to suggest that Hebe's Lip would do much better in a slightly wilder setting, perhaps in a sunny spot at the back of yours? It is a real toughie and will do equally well in sun or dappled shade. But yep, it does have briar heritage and it is thorny, but so, so lovely if you can get it so you see sunlight through its petals - it is almost translucent. It is also the nearest I am ever going to get to damask roses. Mine grows in a clump of Bowles Golden Grass (milium effusum) and swathes of ox-eye daisies. I believe it will not frizzle in high heat although I have no idea whether a winter chill period is essential - I suspect this may be your main drawback.

Both hebes you mentioned are hybrid crosses of New Zealand natives. There are hundreds of hybrids, with countless different common names, and new ones appearing continually in nurseries. It is said that the smaller the leaf, the hardier the Hebe. I believe 'Green Globe' is hybrid of 'whipcord' style Hebes, which vaguely resemble dwarf evergreens. I have a similar Hebe 'McKean' in my garden which is a compact emerald green shrub now approaching 2'x 2'. 'Red Edge' may be one of the more hardier large-leaved Hebes. It too is successful here on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Some Hebes develop an open leggy habit with age that is unsightly to some. All prefer full sun, so your situation sounds about right. Less than excellent drainage may spell the death of them however, so be sure to plant them high and dry. Here is a link that might be useful: Hebe Society

As hebes are relatively inexpensive little plants when small, why not try them? Provided you can locate some easily, that is :-) A lot of what we know about plant hardiness and heat tolerance comes from planting things that may not have previously been considered as suitable for the area. These are only guidelines after all and this sort of trial and error experimentation has lead to a much broader range of plant suitability than was originally thought. At the most, you may be out a few bucks if they can't take the heat. Much of what we do as gardeners is experiment with a particular plant in a particular place and as long as it is not a major investment (like a tree), if it doesn't work, NBD. The Huntington IS a magical place. I spent hours wandering their succulent garden - what an amazing collection of plants!

Hi Jeremiah,

The best place I've found for Hebes is The Gardener's Choice on S. Pacific Highway, in Tigard. They have an excellant selection---twelve or fifteen varieties.

The aggie station is off of I5 at the exit just south of Wilsonville and a couple miles east---OK, the address says Aurora, but that's a post office thing. I wouldn't try to get cuttings, but a visit wasn't a problem.

I have some pink elephant I can share. Does Brugmansia need to be brought in over the winter?

I am very interested in your pink elephant. Brugmansia is hardy to zone 8a. I have overwintered some in the ground. They die back and emerge again from the roots the following year. If you would like them to stay large it is better to bring them inside. I have many other plants that I can share as well. Please e-mail me privately so we can get something arranged.
