Premier Pro Mix BX in OKC

Yesterday I got my 2012 stock of Premier Pro Mix BX from ESTES Inc at OKC. Jeff Campbell was generous to order for few bags on request to save my shipping cost as online shipping is ridiculous. I asked Jeff Campbell whey you won't stock up Pro Mix? he said there is not much demand for this product. That was surprise to me. If you need ProMix just call Jeff, he will order and ready for pick up in couple of days. I am really happy with Pro Mix BX last year.

Too late....they don't have any left and don't know if they'll be getting any more. The have to order half of a semi load to get it and even if we all went in together...I don't know that as a collective group we'd need or want that much.

DH called today and got this info directly from Jeff.

"There is not a store in our area within 50 miles that stocks Promix..I contacted their website and have rec'd no response. Maybe I'll try to see if they have an 800# tomorrow." I just checked my partial bale & the info for the US is 800-525-2553. It appears to be their US office in Doylestown PA (if the 800 number has changed, you can probably find a local (215 or 610 exchange most likely) number for Premier Hort Products. Hope this helps! I tried a Fafard product and I went back to ProMix PGX. The Fafard contained a lot of chunks of sphagnum peat, along with a lot of dust and twigs. Looked like it had been screened at about 3/8"-- way too coarse for my needs. The ProMix contains a wetting agent that helps keep the surface from crusting. Even the ProMix forms a crust if the pots are allowed to dry out, but re-wetting is easier than with other brands. I find that re-wetting is easier if you spray the surface with a fine mist. Spraying is generally preferable to pouring water, since a stream of water can dislodge fine seeds and send them over the edge-- between the peat block and the pot wall. My experience with storing it-- if the compressed bale is stored, or frozen, for any length of time, it will lose its "loft". It won't fluff up nicely when water is added, like it is supposed to. So my advice is to either use it up before winter, or "decant" it into smaller bags so it can be stored de-compressed and de-lumped, if that makes sense. Doing this by hand it tedious-- sometimes I hire the kid next door to crumble it into smaller bags. swontgirl-- bug eggs? I wouldn't worry. This stuff is completely sterile. Greenhouse growers wouldn't touch it otherwise.

Wish I'd known sooner but I panicked in November and bought bags of Miracle Gro germinating mix from Agway in Englishtown. They had to order it for me but at least I got it for winter/spring sowing. Last year I waited too long and had a compressed bale of ProMix BF with Biofungicide delivered...shipping cost as much as the germinating mix. The Premier website says it can be used in "cut flowerbeds" so don't see why you can't use it to lighten up outdoor beds. Would imagine you'd have to take into consideration the 75-85% sphagnum peat moss in the mix in case you don't want too much water retention for certain plants. I'm torn between the things I read that tell me to use peat moss to "improve drainage" and things that tell me not to use it because it can turn water repellant. Gladly soonergrandmom. I found it at Estes Chemical Inc. 1819 NW 5th, west of downtown OKC. 405-232-2493. I did a cost comparison a couple of weeks ago and here's what I found. 1. ProMix BX, available in Oklahoma City at Estes Chemical. A 2.8 cubic foot bag equals 79 liters equals 83 quarts. At $14 per 2.8 cubic foot bag the price per unit comes to $5 per CF, $0.18 per liter, and $0.168 per quart. 2. Miracle Grow Potting Mix, available in Midwest City, OK at Home Depot. A 2.5 cubic foot bag equals 70 liters equals 74 quarts. At $12.47 per 2.5 cubic foot bag the price per unit comes to $4.99 per cubic foot, $0.178 per liter and $0.168 per quart. 3. Miracle Grow Moisture Control Potting Mix, available at Sam's Club Oklahoma City. A 1.8 cubic foot bag equals 50 liters equals 55 quarts. Bought my seed starting mix @ American plant products in Okc-- they have lots of varieties. I bought a couple kinds -- was between $15-$17 a bag for the 2.8 cu ft Google them & you can view most of the inventory. They are a wholesaler, but do sell some items to public. It would be worth giving them a call to find out if they will sell it directly to you. If not I would be willing to meet up with those who need it & help purchase it.

Think there basic rule is they will sell the items to the public that are not available @ local stores--such as greenhouse supplies.

My Pro-mix may not be new this year, but the leeks and onions are coming up fast so I don't think it hurt me to hold it over. I'm glad I have plenty.

I ordered four ProMix BX 2.8 cf bags, Jeff charged me $13.00 each. Which is much cheaper than anywhere else. -Chandra

Watch the prices on Pro-Mix no matter where you buy it, because they never seem to be consistent. The second year that I bought it, it was much cheaper than the first year. Now tell me another product that is like that in this economy. I am sure freight has a good deal to do with the price.

The freight cost is why Home Depot stopped carrying it, the first time gas went to $4/gallon. I used to buy the 4 cf bales for $11. Would have paid for the additional freight just to be able to get it. Several years later I'm still miffed at HD.

seedmama - The same year you paid $11, I paid $22 for the bales. The next time I bought bags (like Chandra), not bales because I bought them for the same price Chandra did. They were loading our truck with a fork lift and Al told me I probably didn't have enough so I had them go get me another load. I don't know how long it will stay good, but so far it is fine except the open bag had some ants in it. I used it anyway and the seeds came up just fine. So far, so good.

Seeing the pelicans coming in today makes me think I will be doing some more seed starting soon. Yes, I know it is winter still. I had planned to start the Spring things a week earlier than usual, but in my head that date keeps slipping forward.
