What's your experience with buddleia in zone 5?

I planted my first perennial garden last spring that included two Black Knight buddleia, but there's no sign of life in them. Everything I've read says they are hardy to zone 5, but I've also heard here and elsewhere that a lot of New Englanders, esp. in zone 5 or less, have a hard time keeping them going.

I did whack them back to probably six inches in April, and now I understand I should have waited until I saw new growth (and maybe not cut so low), so perhaps I killed them? Would Black Knight be more or less hardy than other buddleia?

My decision now is whether to replace them and try again or look for another tall perennial to fill those spots. I'm looking for low maintenance, so if I'll be lucky to keep it alive for 2-3 years I might look for something else. What should I do?
