12 months of flowers/ or what is blooming in your december garden

on the 23rd on they way out of the house to see a movie i saw 2 snow drops blooming. I've had something in bloom every month this year!!!

May be i will plant som cyclmens and witchhazels to be sure!!!

(remember that i'm a solid zone 5)

There was nothing blooming 4 days ago when I last checked.

I'm guessing it probably is not common for the snowdrops to be blooming now, or is this their first season? I'm not familiar with them.... (don't have any)

I did do some 'Googleing' and found this link.

Aconites...something I had never heard of b4, and now probably need.

I see they are in UK...hmmm will have to find them in the US or trade for them.
Are you by any chance familiar with the snowflakes and aconites?

There's nothing blooming in the garden--but I saw violets blooming in the yard, here in Columbus.

Kate, thanks for the reply. Spotty has been re-potted into regular store bought orchid compost, but S. Maria, being much newer is still in the original stuff, neither being Osmunda fibre. They both get fed weekly and weakly with Baby Bio orchid food, and once a month they just get watered extra thoroughly to flush the pots out. I did actually wonder whether to cut the new spike off earlier when it was just showing to try and help it build up strength....but I just couldn't pluck up courage to give it 'the snip'! Gill.

When I first began gardening, I lived in an apartment with a balcony... I had tons of houseplants, and every spring I would fill containers with annuals for the balcony. I grew geraniums, ivy geraniums, petunias, snapdragons, pansies, lantana, lobelia... each year I would try something new or different. Now that I garden on a large scale, I have so many types of plants that I couldn't list them all! I grow both annuals and perennials, roses, flowering shrubs, spring blooming bulbs, annual and perennial vines, shade plants and sun plants... I plant a raised bed vegetable garden every year, and this year I'm planning a new rose garden, and completely re-landscaping the front yard. I have blank spots to fill in in both the bulb bed and the perennial borders, and a wind break to under-plant. We'll be putting up a small greenhouse this year, too! I spent all day out in the gardens, raking and doing general clean-up. I think I actually got a little sunburn on my face! Lizaliy - Even cacti have their limits, and can easily be killed by someone not familiar with succulents! Yes, I've killed cactus before, and I'm not proud of it! Ryan - my bulbs really want to be outdoors, too! I have stretched leaves leaning toward the windows, and less leaves than I know they'd grow if they were happy in the sunshine! I hope I don't burn them with too much sun too soon! Mymanga - you can grow most any plant in a container on a balcony... as long as it can tolerate your balcony conditions. You could try some vegetables or herbs, or you could plant large planters with annual arrangements... you could have houseplants in your containers, and then bring them indoors to enjoy over winter... the sky's the limit!

We're happy to see your comment. Your UK climate can grow a lot of things that folks here would envy, so it all evens out for sure. :) Delicious looking lettuce and salad, Jay, nice job! My leaf lettuce is still looking great too, although my salads never look as tasty as yours, hah! Nice harvest there, Captain! You're growing a LOT of different types of pumpkins and squash. So fun to see. I've never really given pumpkins a serious try here. You're making me want to though. Thanks for posting your harvest. Impressive! Nice new pics too, Waterbug. You're staying BUSY on that garden work. It looks really nice. I hope you post a lot of updates on how it all comes together. You're more ambitious than I am. I hope you start or have a thread with all of the changes and work you're doing? Nice cannas too of course. Like you, I love watching the hummers work over the aloes in the garden. Speaking of which, here's Aloe 'Cynthia Giddy' in bloom this morning: Here's some of the oxalis 'Grand Duchess' in bloom in the garden too. Winter growing/summer dormant, so full sun since they love it in winter and are asleep in summer. Definitely the largest flowers of any oxalis I've seen. Indoors this Schlumbergera 'Samba Brazil' is making a nice show. Despite the frost warning last night, no frost at my little garden, so these geraniums still look great. Happy gardening all! They differ from place to place, of course - and according to when the rain falls, but here are some possibles, Leanne: December: Hibiscus heterophyllus March: Stenocarpus sinuatus The September choices are legion! What about Prostantheras or Violas. Do Sarchochilus flower early enough down there? Best of luck Trish

Hey Digger,

Saw your post so I ventured out to the Woodland garden, My Hellebore has 5 buds on it for the first time. Wow I was excited can't wait to see the flowers. They are as big as my thumb shouldn't be long now.

Hi Digger!

I have two kinds of Lamium blooming in my garden. They always hang on the longest. One is purplely and one is White Nancy.

Yes, the swap is going on! It's Saturday, May 19, 2007 - same time and place. I'll be posting VERY soon. Betty from Michigan called me yesterday for the scoop...she and Ron can make their reservations. Yes, time to post it!!

I was just going to say I have an 'Aureum' Lamium still in bloom. Doesnt stop til Feb, then starts again in April. If you want a long bloomer this is the plant for you! All of my bulbs are coming up like fools but none in bloom. I do really enjoy my evergreen plants this time of year.

I have quite a few snowdrops in bloom and one primrose. I also have buds on the Rijnveld's Early Sensation daffodils. This winter is crazy!

its so good to hear from every one.
yesterday i noticed that my tea roses (which havent lost their leaves are putting out new growth. truly crazy this winter and we are expecting 60 degrees tomorrow

I've got pansies and violas blooming their little heads off...I haven't seen my snowdrops yet....

hi everybody

well those tea roses aren't growing anymore!!! about time they gave up the ghost.
still have snowdrops, and a lot of daffs are pushing up.

chemcurl, snow drops are usually the first thing up in my yard. some folks see them as a christmas flower, but usually
here in zone 5 the wait until the beginning of feburary. sort of like hellebores and cyclamens-- you can get fall and early winter blooms if you have a mild stretch, but usually you wait til the end of january to look.

Well, wow! I had lamium ('Anniversary') blooming in my garden throughout all of December and into January--until we had the real cold weather hit. I sure thought I was special, but now I see that it's not that unusual for them. :)
