One week till Louisville Fall 'Pow Wow'

The yard looks like hell because of the heat, but I am ready for this. Roll call. If you need directions, e-mail me and let me know and direction you are coming from.

I'll be there with bells on. I had hoped to be on top of things, potting stuff over the summer and it just didn't happen, due to the extreme temps...I'll bring something edible, seeds, and hopefully at least a few plants to share/trade. Right now I have quite a big pot ghetto, but it is all stuff I bought or traded for that's needing planted...am so behind here.

I will have daffs for naturalizing...no names as they might be seedlings that never got a name, or else a mix of daffs.
I'll have seeds to share.

Bring your seed boxes gang, with your 'excess' seeds I'm looking forward to a fun visit with some fun gardening friends, both old and new.

I'll be there. I do need directions. I will be coming from Jeffersonville In. Starting out new this year. Came several years back. My garden grew into a jungle and had to be taken out. Now starting out hoping to start a butterfly garden next year.
Will bring seeds, but not much else to share. Do have a few hen and chicks, sedum, some kind of salvia I forgot. Also will bring handmade bourbon balls and chocolate cake truffles. Looking forward to it. Thanks Marcia. Vicci

@sunnibel: Apologies! I think of the east as so crowded, I forget there ARE rural areas :). Re: Cardboard: I have had no quackgrass come up through it at all, for 5 years after cardboard + 4" compost was put down. At that point, I let my tenants have the bed and they allowed the quackgrass to come in from the side. Quackgrass is incredibly invasive, and I have found its runners in a dense layer 24" down. But it is very sensitive to shading. I have a bed, just north of my neighbors' two story house, which gets full sun at midsummer but only a couple hours the rest of the year. The amount of quackgrass it has, if it was in a sunny bed and let go, would take over and kill everything else in the bed within a month or two. But that bed, I don't even pull it. It's been at a steady state for 5 or 6 years, and it doesn't bother the potatoes. There is spearmint and bindweed in that bed, too -- same deal, though I do pull the aboveground growth off the bindweed. That bed is isolated from the rest of the garden by a driveway. If it wasn't, the quackgrass would use it as a base of operations to invade the rest of the garden (and the world!). Re: Water: Sunnibel asked about summer rain. We don't haz it. Lawns here are brown in summer and green in winter. Controlling water is a significant part of how I control weeds. I water the garden deeply once a month in summer, for established plants. Newer plants and water-lovers like beans and raspberries, every two weeks. This helps a lot :). If the plants I want have deep roots and the weeds don't get a chance to develop them, there is not much competition. Is this water thing related to why tilling doesn't seem to do much good, here?

Following is part of an article on vernilization: I'm wondering if WSing achieves this? This is different from Stratification. I bring it here for those who have had trouble with Columbine, notice what is said... Micki The flowering of many cold-hardy herbaceous perennials is initiated by an extended period of cold, known as a vernalization treatment. Some perennials will not flower without a cold treatment, while others flower more rapidly and have a stronger flowering response (such as more flowers) when provided with a cold treatment. This article contains tips for successful vernalization treatments of cold-hardy (USDA Zone 6 or higher) perennials that are propagated by seeds or cuttings. Most perennials propagated by cuttings can be satisfactorily cooled in their plug trays. However, some perennials propagated by seed must develop a minimum number of leaves before they become sensitive to a cold treatment. For example, several varieties of columbine (aquilegia) should have at least 8-10 leaves per plant (not per cell) before starting a cold treatment. Less mature plants may be juvenile and not responsive to the cooling treatment. In many cases, subsequent flowering is improved when plants are cooled in larger plug sizes rather than smaller ones. Highest plant quality, regardless of propagation technique, is usually achieved when plants are planted in their final containers, allowed to grow for three weeks or more at warm temperatures and then cooled. Effective Temperature Ranges In the past five years, researchers at Michigan State University (especially Beth Fausey, Sonali Padhye and Art Cameron) have methodically quantified how many perennials respond to a range of cooling temperatures and durations (visit www.hrt.msu.edu/floraoe/articles.htm for more info). The most effective cooling temperature range for a large number of species was between 41Ã¯Â¿Â½ and 46Ã¯Â¿Â½ F, especially when short durations (4 or 6 weeks) of cooling were provided. With longer cooling durations, the effective temperature range broadened. In general, 6-8 weeks of cooling at 41Ã¯Â¿Â½ F saturates the vernalization response of nearly all species; however, a few exceptions exist.

How many buds have opened as of now? I have two plants. Both purchased from nurseries. I had my FFO on one earlier in the year and blown away by the deep, saturated color. It's gorgeous! The second plant came from a trade, but I know it was purchased by how it was packaged with it's tag. It just bloomed this past week and was much lighter than my other one. Because it has only opened one flower, I'm waiting to see what others will look like. The first plant I mentioned is a year old. It did not bloom last year and has cycled through an entire year. I don't know if that makes a difference in the color or not. The trade plant is young and much smaller than my established one. Linda

I usually till three times a year--twice in the spring to prepare the beds, and then once in the fall to prepare them for winter (although I am less likely to do the fall tilling). I don't use mulch, and I just top dress with composted manure regularly. Yet I have tons of worms in my soil. I use wide beds and try to plant whatever I am growing as close together as possible. Yes, they say this increases disease and bugs, but IME, it has not done so. What it does do is conserve moisture and protect the soil. Then it is a cinch to hand hoe the few weeds that do appear. Thing is, I only till down about 3 inches max. I have never seen the necessity of going deeper. My neighbor is an old-school tiller, and he tills down to 8 inches(!) on a regular basis, at least once a week. He likes to till his grass clippings in, which he fertilizes with synthetics that include herbicides. He uses rows instead of beds, so a lot of the soil is tilled. His garden soil is completely dead. He likes it, though, because for him, a soft soil is a good soil, and it is most definitely soft. He does in fact raise good tomatoes. So do I, and he can't figure out how I do it.:) It takes all kinds to make a horse race.

Sorry, maybe I should throw out a wish list. Since I'm just starting out pretty much any perrenial would be great. Also seed for winter sow. Love day lillies. I love them all. Just looking forward to the fun and visiting. Vicci

thank you for the kind words about Mema-I appreciate it SO much!

this fall and next spring, I will be downsizing my garden and my Mom's garden- I don't really need anything, but would love to share anything I have with any of you...

I will bring seeds too
hope to bring extra pots, winter sowing cups, garden items

have lots of peony, iris and day lily to share
have several sedums
I have 3 hardy hibiscus that I grew from seed-they have been potted all summer- Lord Baltimore red
I have some bulbs- tulips, lily, daffs

I will update my have list sometime today
depending on how much is requested ahead of time, I may not dig many items 'up for grabs'

I will bring a salad, a sweet, and paper plates

looking forward to seeing all of you!

Am looking forward to seeing what 'garden items' you might have, as well as your seeds. Whoo-Hoo!

I am needing some HUGE black pots for a friend who will be digging and overwintering some things inside a heated building...need not be pretty.

I saw ohiovalleygardener (Vicci) has sedums on her seeds wish list, but I'll bet she would love to have various sedums even better....I see she has some to bring too.

I'd love a Lord Baltimore.

I'm sure your bulbs will find a good home, or I can find them a home here or at a friend's.

Still not sure what all I'm bringing...probably won't have much chance to get things together until Thurs or Fri...Carpet shampooers and overnight company coming tomorrow.

Hi all,
I tried to update my haves list, but somehow it did not "take"- I had typed a whole lot of 'stuff' :((

Sue and Marcia, will have a Lord Baltimore for you
they are hardy, the one at Mom's has been there at least 4 years and always comes back- nothing special you need to do
(they do spread out- so you need a pretty big spot for it)

will try updating my list now- if it doesn't work, I will post here

I probably won't dig the heurchera, hosta and ginger unless someone asks..
I will check here again the in the morning - should have time to dig a bit before I head out -

It might be a good thing if we end up with a 'smaller' sized group, if the weather doesn't cooperate...and yes, it was bound to happen sometime. I know rain would certainly be welcome by many gardeners.

Oh, I'll have your daffs as well as for Tina (emailed her this AM) and also for Jen.

Still don't know what I'm bringing plant and food wise....sigh.

I'm bring a bag with alot of old vegetable seeds. They are probably 5 years old. If anyone wants them to try out they are welcome. I got them from a client so not sure how they were stored. Lots of tomato and hot pepper seeds. See ya tomorrow. Vicci
