Annie_NH! My Hibiscus is sprouting!

Hello Miss Annie!

I just have to tell you, the hibiscus that you let me swap for is sprouting. I am so happy! I followed your directions and you said that it would most likely look like it was dead but just to be patient and it would come back and it has. I am sure it is going to be a beauty if it looks like any of yours.

I don't know about the peony that you were so kind to give me, I am keeping my fingers crossed on that prize. My DH popped it out of the ground today so we could check on it because we couldn't see anything around where it was planted. I left the stalk from last year on it just to make sure I knew exactly where it was. The root is fine but there isn't anything new growth. When the plant was split, I did not tell my DH that he had to make sure there where eyes on it. I am sure in a few years it will be fine.

I did want to make sure I told you about the hibiscus and I hope that everyone else who received plants followed your wonderful instructions. I can't wait until it is an actual plant. Once again thank you!

I'm so glad to hear the good news about the hibiscus. Mine haven't sprouted yet but I'm just a bit north of you so it will probably be peeping thru soon. I hope you planted yours in full sun. Give it miracle grow every week and you should have loads of blossoms by the end of July/first of August. I started about 20 red hibiscus in February and plan to put a few in the swap if you are interested.As for the peony give it a while. Some of mine are just now making an appearance.

That is why you are the best! I have not planted the hibiscus in the ground yet. Your directions said to keep it in a cold cellar or garage so I kept mine in the coldest part of my basement. I brought it up to my kitchen a few weeks ago, but I am glad that I know now to plant it in full sun and to give it MG. I am going find a bright spot in my yard for it. Once again thank you for everything!

I will give the peony more time. It is in a great spot and I am sure that in time it will be beautiful. I will definately try to trade you for two of your hibiscus that you are putting in the swap. I will try to come up with something on my own to trade you for and I am trying to convince a neighbor that she has to attend with us and I know she would definately want one. I have to find out from her what she is going to trade and I will get back to you by this weekend. :)

If you brought it in for cold weather, it will probably come back. Those twisted ones and probably the shrub one are tropical. You must always protect in winter, probably when it goes below 45 degrees or so. I used to live below N.O. and it always took a while for hibiscus to come back. They root easily and you can take cuttings during the year, and grow in smaller pots if you have room, and they will take off when it's warm. Of course you can't do that with the twisted one. Remmeber, these are TROPICAL, think Miami or Hawaii, and they like warm and humid weather. I predict they will come back.

Being that it's supposedly hardy to zone 4 and you are in zone 4, you shouldn't have to do anything. But, being that it's the first winter, you might want to try mulching just as extra insurance. Just mound peat moss, loose soil, or compost, or leaves over the base. Maybe cover with burlap or a sheet of newspaper and rocks if you think it might blow away. That would help insulate the root zone for winter. I tried hardy hibiscus two years ago but unfortunately, even with mulching, it didn't survive the winter. It's just as well, since they are so late to come up in spring and apparently bloom late in the season, I am not sure it would be a good match for our climate. You say you have Mediterranean type weather, so I have to assume you are at least zone 8 like me. I had one, plant it in the ground with plenty of composted cow manure, and mulch well. At least 2 inches. Water it every day for the first week, then taper it off to every 3 days or so. They are hardy plants in the right zone. When you see it needs water, water it. It will come back next year, but get it established now, so it has a great root system already established for the winter. Add additional mulch for the winter too.
