Just received my Journal in today's mail and am I excited! It has another great article by our own Josh Spece entitled, "Ugly Ducklings". It touched me on my hope (and many others, I'm sure) that some of my immature hostas that are nothing to get excited about right now will someday mature into something spectacular. Some just take more time to develop their unique characteristics. One hosta I personally have in mind is the one portrayed on the cover, Liberty. I bought one in early June only because I saw a very mature one in Tom Riddle's display garden. The one-eyed hosta I bought that day was far from spectacular and I definitely would have passed it up. Even now, only 10 weeks later, it is looking more like a real Liberty!

Another article discusses the thermal desruction of nematodes! Talk about timing!

Gotta go...and read my Journal! Hope the rest of you get yours soon!

Got mine too. I've been reading it cover to cover as usual. Isn't Liberty beautiful on the front cover? Aren't the photo content entries wonderful too? I never tire of seeing hosta garden photos, even my old photos I drag out from past years.

Gosh, aren't they a wonderful plant?

I made a suggestion to the AHS that the past issues of the Journal be put on a DVD and sold for, say $60 which seems to be a fairly average figure for such DVDs. Perhaps the price could be higher for non-members and include a year's membership in the AHS. Another option I mentioned was to have the old hosta journals available as PDFs in the members only section of the the AHS website. I would love to have a collection of the Journals, I've only been a member for a year and a bit, so don't have that many. But, to be honest, I cannot afford to buy the back issues at $12+ each. If I understand it, the supply of back issues is running down anyway. It seems only sensible to put the set on DVDs for posterity as there really is no other practical way for current and future members to access the articles, other than having them on the website, and I think you have to scan them to make them usable, so why not go just one step further? I haven't heard back from anyone about this idea. I think it could be a good source of new members plus it would be a value added option for memmbers. Any thoughts from AHS members, potential members, board members? I love the Hosta Journal - the writing is excellent and the information priceless! Jakki

I mentioned two new hostas in my original post, and it is still there. It was strictly an observation, not promoting anything. I check back often. Never saw other entries that might have been deleted. Bernd- Naylor usually sends out their catalog much later. This one is the earliest ever for them. I'm zone 9, rarely if ever a frost, and most of mine still look good. BUT I'm very happy to see what will be offered for next year. I get late February shipments here. -Babka

Hosta Journals are SO informative. Both the online and the two (used to be three) printed ones. My older ones are piling up and I think I will sell a bunch of them to make more room. With printing/mailing costs going up, I wonder if we aren't headed for all online Hosta Journals. Problem is, I love to look thru the photos in my lap...not my lap top. To flip thru them... -Babka

It's the 3x/year publication of the American Hosta Society. All members receive the Journal.

Got mine yesterday. I was reading the article on hostas in an Islamic garden and admiring the pictures. When I turned to the full 2 page picture, I was pleasantly surprised to realize that I was in that garden & sitting in that chair in the little summer house just a few short weeks ago on Friday July 13th! I was there with the English Garden Tour arranged by Mike & Kathy Shadrack along with 37 other hosta/garden enthusiasts.
June Colley & John Baker opened their home & garden to us. June prepared a delightful meal for all of us including spring rolls to die for.
This garden also including the "hanging hosta garden" that was featured in the last Hosta Journal.
As beautiful as the pictures are, they cannot capture the total ambience, warmth and welcome we all experienced from both our wonderful hosts, their home and garden.
