I've never heard of doing that, but maybe someone else can shed some light on that procedure. The best way I know of to kill suckers off completely (without doing damage to the ground cover) is to paint Round-Up Concentrate (don't dilute it) or brush killer on the entire surface of the suckers. It's even better to wait until Fall if possible, when the tree is pulling the sap down into the roots.

Maybe the syrup/sugar/molasses attracts bears, and they rip it out of the ground? :)

Or, remove soil around the sucker all the way down to the root. Snap the sucker off with loppers. If there are plenty of feeder roots (so it won't harm the tree), lop the root off, too.

Thanks for all your suggestions,we removed the tree a couple of years ago,even rented a stump remover,took that puppy down to nothing,or so we thought,but now we have all these new shoots coming up.
I so remember a discussion here about this very thing,I was hoping some one would know how to access back discussions,I know there was sweetner involved some how,ha ha
I guess I can just go out and try it eh?
My concern is if i can plant in that spot with ot hurting any new plantings.
