SB, That primula is pretty! By adverse I mean not only a lack of sun, there are also the big trunk like roots growing many feet deeply into my property along with thick feeder roots and they immediately suck the ground bone dry after watering or rain creating a difficult, if not impossible 120' x 15' area that is not good for any kind of desirable gardening and very difficult to dig. Thats a lot of square feet being affected by neighbor neglect and on a city lot when space is always at a premium its a bit hard to swallow at times. I found that Salvia greggi which will take the dry conditions do surprisingly well since the tree leaves are not dense during their best blooming time and they are defoliating when the salvias are back in bloom in fall. A really big surprise is how well Silver King Artemisia does. I have lots of this growing in groups in the area. It stands tall and thick and adds some much needed bright silver interest lightening up the otherwise dark area. I wouldn't have guessed it would do so well. Cool season grasses like stipa varieties that go dormant in summer are also choices and I am having luck with hardy Lantana too. Of course all these bloom better in full sun but they are still attractive and able to take the conditions I am dealing with. What I am trying to get are plants/shrubs that will provide some height as well as visual size presence since its a transition zone that jumps drastically from low growing plants to this sudden and abrupt line of unattractive mismatched volunteer trees and messy undergrowth. Currently the effect is very jarring, like a 30 ft wall of blackness that feels and looks visually oppressive. I am on the downhill side which adds to the problem because my yard is much lower than the neighbors so eye level is distorted from his ground level to mine making it even harder to achieve a graceful visual transition. I'm planting on his side (with permission) to get some height. So many plants I've tried just end up seriously leaning east looking like they are attempting escape and further emphasizing the lopsided problem so I have to go back to the drawing board but these I mentioned have worked. Jitsmith, as pertains to the Oenothera, check out the thread linked below--and I don't think you'll have any trouble at all deciding what to do with the stuff! Oh, yeah, the flowers are pretty---but too much of a good thing isn't pretty at all! I wasn't familiar with that particular Anemone, so I checked it out. I think your plan to stick it in a pot is a really excellent idea! :-) Zach, I hadn't even thought about snow-on-the-mountain, but that stuff is nasty, nasty, nasty! It's been a while since it's come up, but we've had folks around here in the past who were desperately seeking ways to get rid of it. If you have it in the grass I recommend Weed-B-Gon to at least knock it down some. Would probably take a long time to get rid of it all the way, but mowing it, rather than weakening it, will have the opposite effect. Mowing it will just promote new--and more--growth and it'll come raging back bigger and better than ever. I don't understand--and didn't when I was selling them either!--why these kinds of things are sold commercially, or at least why they're sold without a SERIOUS warning about what's gonna happen when you plant them in the ground!!! I used to try my best to warn people when I saw them picking out things like these. Houttuynia, Chameleon Plant, is another one, but you don't hear about that one as often as snow-on-the-mountain or Mexican Evening Primrose. I used to actively try to discourage people from buying Houttuynia! Pretty green/red/yellow/cream AGGRESSIVE leaves! The partly saving grace out here is the dry soil which slows it down some, but with moist/wet soil it takes over the world! Think Kudzu! There should be a Federally mandated warning on the pots for things like these! WARNING! This plant can be dangerous to the health of your yard--and to your blood pressure and your mental state!!!!! as stated, the trees your seeing are mimosa and are prolific re-seeders and thats why everyone is telling you not to plant one. i like the flowers too. the mulch they sell in solway is low grade and often contains poison ivy and potentially harmful bugs. the price is right though especally if you need a lot. i got a private tour of the recycle center just prior to it opening a few years ago and i must say it is impressive what they do there.

I had heard this rose might get tall, but things don't usually get huge in my climate as it's just not that sunny, so I thought I'd try. However, rather than growing up, my two-year-old GC seems to be growing "out", like a wild thing... I have never quite seen a plant grow in every direction like this. When I stake it, branches tend to grow out sideways, then flop over, or flop, twist and grow upside down. Worse than any raspberry bush. Like a Clematis on steroids. It's in the back of a border, I can't seem to keep it from learning on, or hugging branches around its neighbors, and it grows fast. It's like The Stranger Things vines this year. Some shrubs like this start to grow straight-up better with time, is this one of those? Or will it need its own yard? Is there any kind of pruning that reigns this in? And how to do it? Pruning it after the first flush last year seemed to kill part of it off, which was surprising, so i don't want to go too hard on it.
