It's an excellent sale - lots of native plants, herbs. The veggies go quickly. I haven't gone to the auction before, but I have had friends say they have gotten incredible deals on trees....

Thanks for the well wishes! I started out with 16 possible entries a couple of months ago, last night I made the final decision on the top ten. They're all nice but the ones I selected are my favorites and IMHO are the best of the best. There's at least one that will wow the judges. For the average grower it is not a big production, but for me the being so anal about the presentation and the headache of making a pot to match the plant it is fairly involved. Most of the specimens I'm taking have to be prepared months in advance, taking them from growing pots or bed to show containers, root pruning or downright removal. There's one plant I cut in half to fit into the pot and still look balanced. Another was plucked from the ground 5:00 this morning and staged before I went to work. There's only two that I did nothing to, since I want them to grow slow I just leave them in the show pots year round. Then there's transportation. If it was just across town it would be a piece of cake, but a 6hr drive takes some preparation. Each plant has to be anchored to the pot so it doesn't vibrate out and topple over. Then the smaller plants need to boxed in such a way so they don't dump from going around a corner. On one plant the stems are so fragile that I put netting around so they don't snap from the bumpy ride. Another plant that didn't make the cut

Ralph - look for me, I'll be in line before 8:00am I hope I hope I hope. This is how it went two years ago (I missed last years): You'll have to park on Beryl Road and more than likely you'll have to park far far away from the arboretum, so be prepared to walk. You'll enter the Arb and follow the mass of people as they migrate to towards the back of the bedding trials area (where there should be rows upon rows of cool season stuff). There will be tables set up where you will have to prove your status as a member (they have lists and won't need to see your card if you don't have it) you can also pay up at this table. After being processed you get to get in line to enter the give away field back behind the arb. This line winds back and forth a lot and tends to be slow moving. Once you get to enter the big field you'll see all the give away plants arranged in long rows. You get to stand beside the plant you want the most if there is room. They most often arrange the rows with a mixture of plants so that certain species are scattered throughout the field and not just in one spot. At 9:00am sharp they blow an air horn and everyone starts grabbing plants. Folks that bring along wheelbarrows or carts park them off away from the rows so they have to carry their picks over to their carts and come back. Within minutes all the plants are snagged and folks may be inclinded to trade back and forth (though this is rare). After all that you have to somehow get your plants back to the street and to your car. Some folks will show up with garden carts stacked up on top of each other (I've seen them stacked 4 high!!!). After you load up your carts you can just leave one behind while you drag the first one to your car but it helps to have someone with you to guard your plants (everyones got the same style of carts so cart ownership gets confusing). In general folks are friendly and not completely competitive over the plants. The arb only has a membership of 2000 and there is over 4000 plants. If its raining (as predicted) there won't be that many people there. The plants are only the stuff propagated from the arboretum's collection so expect to see unusuall-not-available-anywhere-else plants.

Here's a "don't miss" event in Hamilton OH - just north of Cincinnati. Great plants for sale and this private property landscape is well worth the trip regardless Joan Day's Backyard Treasures Annual Plant Sale 6215 Cavalcade Drive Hamilton, OH 45011 Phone 513-868-3512 Friday 26 May 10-5 Saturday 27 May 10-8 Sunday 28 May 10-6 Lots of collector type plants, troughs, hypertufa planters, new sun and shade perennials, and visiting her small, but awesome landscape makes this a definite "Don't Miss" event. I took this info from a card she mails out to previous customers. Use a map program such as MapQuest, Google Maps, or Windows Live Local to get directions. Just to remind people that the (almost certainly) irreversible change to charging a fee would get the Arboretum only between 7 and 8% of their budget. It will of course cost something to administer the fee, so perhaps 5% is a more realistic number? Regardless, the presence or absence of the fee is not going to make an enormous difference in the overall health of the park. And I would argue that they could get more than 7 or 8% if they were just a bit more creative. Eric, you say "People are not donating like they used to. Memberships are way down from a few years ago". I believe you have identified the problem, at least in part. The Arboretum is bad at fundraising. This needs to be fixed. I don't know the people involved, but it's clear they are not reaching out to us "plant people" as well as they should. I also strongly suspect they are failing to tap the immense wealth in San Francisco and its suburbs, which I would expect would be their true source of money. Reaching out to "plant people": I suppose there are many ways one could describe Strybing's incredibly low profile. As I mentioned above, many of the big names in the horticultural world are totally unaware of their sales. But this is perhaps even more telling: I've only been to the Conservatory of Flowers (the glasshouse, also in Golden Gate Park) and the UC Botanical Garden a couple times each in the last couple years. However, I just checked: emails from UC Botanical Garden in the last year: 38. From the Conservatory of flowers: 18. From Strybing: 0. (note that I have received a number of personal emails from employees and volunteers at Strybing in response to questions.) Strybing fails to promote itself and I assume to raise money. That needs to be fixed before they make an irreversible step like charging money. Yes, those of us who post on a forum like this will continue to go to Strybing. Those aren't the people we should be concerned with. People like my mom, as I mentioned, will be less likely to go. Strybing is unlikely to ever raise that much money by selling more plants, by the way. $200,000 would be 20,000 $10 plants, even assuming 100% profit, which divided by 10 or 12 sales is close to 2,000 plants per sale...impossible. However they could clearly raise more money by raising their profile a little bit and appealing to all of the wealth in the area. If they start holding events for the rich and they make this place of beauty a center for those people, a good fundraising effort should be able to raise 10% more money. However, if they do run out of money and can't take care of all their plants, I suspect they can save quite a bit of money by neglecting their most abundant one--the grass--which is all over. Let the grass die and go uncut, yet preserve the important plants. The park will become an "eyesore" in the opinion of many, yet they will preserve what counts. I bet the dead overgrown grass would draw attention and that extra 7 or 8% of the budget would quickly appear. There are many creative ways the Arboretum could raise money. The newspaper article said that $10,000 was spent to pay a lobbyist to push for the $7 fee. If they had instead spent the money on a consultant to look at ways to raise the profile of the Arboretum, appeal to the wealth of the area, and raise money, I suspect the need for the fee would vanish.

I went last year.

I was there for the start of the sale (in intermittently pouring rain) but was surprised to find that many of the more desirable/unusual items were already gone (especially in woody plants).
I suspect members get first crack at the best stuff before the sale starts.

Eric..I think you are on target with your statement about many of the more rare plants being gone right away. The members of Chadwick Arboretum have a pre-sale the night before it's open to the public. A woman from my garden club said many plants go at that time...but, there's still lots of plant material for the regular sale.

I may go this year and check it out.

I work down at OSU, so it makes it a bit easier, but I will be down there at 7 am...

I bought some spiderwort down there a couple years ago, and I need some more!

Did anyone go today??? I couldn't go because I had a very sick kitty and had to observe him ( and report back to the vet)

How was the selection...what were the prices like.

I made it! Actually, I went twice - I was waiting in line when they opened this morning, and also went back in the afternoon...

I got some garden phlox "Nora Leigh", heliotrope, spiderwort, Victor Reiter cranesbill (looks lovely - purple/green leaves), pink turtlehead, forget-me-nots, babys breath, two tomato plants - a white tomato and a microtom tomato (its the one that only grows to be like 6 inches tall), tomatillo, and some herbs (flax, oregano, tarragon, lavender). I was a little disappointed at the herbal selection this year. Last year they had lots of different kinds of basil, while this year they just had the basics.

I went back on my lunch hour, and a lot of the stuff was gone already.

And I even stayed under my $50 limit! Most of the plants ranged from 4.50 to 8.00, and all the herbs were 2.50. I know I could probably find the herbs cheaper other places, but these looked really healthy.

They also had hypertuffa mixes for sale for $12, but I'm not sure I'd ever have the time to mix it, so I didn't buy any.

I found some good perennials, but much of the touted woody plant selection wasn't available, even though I had an arboretum membership and arrived early for the pre-sale.

Turns out the volunteers get to pick what they want at a pre-pre sale.

I would volunteer, but then I'd probably find out that arboretum board members can choose their favorites at a pre-pre-pre sale.

I give up.

Mail order is less hectic.

That's funny, Eric...a pre pre pre sale. But, it's probably true. I suppose they feel they have to "reward" the volunteers with first picks.

Glad you found some other goodies.

Evan...sounds like it was a successful outing for you, too.

I wish I could have made it over.

Gina...thanks for asking about the kitty. Bandit had a bout of pancreatitis. He was really sick. He spend three nights at the vets and is doing much, much better.

He's eating a little and much perkier. Even our "fur kids" make us worry when they are sick.

He should do well. He has to "avoid rich food". No more shrews for him, I guess. He's "grounded" to the house for a while.
