Looking for a certain shape & color hosta

Hi All,

I'm looking for a vase-shaped large hosta that is light green or yellow with intersting variegation.

Not sure if one even exists. I took out the Turtleheads in the attached picture and need another hosta to fill that spot ... as you can see I have plenty of dark green cultivars, not I need something that will stand out in the middle ...

How about Rascal, Alex Summers or Tobacco Road? I've attached a link to a list of large, upright hostas.

I started looking at that list and it ws overwhelming! I like Tobacco Road ... now to find someone seliing it, lots of "sold out" notices.

How about nigrescens or Tenryu. I took an eye off my nigrescens a year ago last summer and put it into a new garden. The first picture is that plant and the picture was taken last night. The second and third picture is of Tenryu, which looks quite a bit like nigrescens.

About Jaqueline...as the flower ages, it takes on a snickers bar smell. Very sweet carmel scent. The plant is a fairly tall and fast grower. But I am very impressed with the thickness and the sturdiness of the branches it produces. Very unplumeria like. It's a white flower, about three inches wide, with a very prominent yellow throat. First inflo this season easily produced over thirty flowers. Right now I have three more developing inflos that are much larger than the first.

FWIW, I wouldn't recommend full sun in your zone 7. Even if you water it enough, it will bleach out from the sun. Sunlight does promote vigour but it also melts the blue wax off hostas under prolonged exposure. Jo, I'm in zone 8 and most of my hostas get full sun, it's a matter of the angle of the sun, i.e. latitude and not the zone that makes the difference. I'm just north of the 49th parallel, don't know exactly where you are in Ontarario but I'll bet you closer to the 44th or 43rd parallel and the angle of the sun in your garden is steeper and therefor stronger than it is in mine in sunny Richmond, B.C. I like to grow mine in the sun as much as possible for the increased vigour, in particular the green ones... Your seedlings will probably be green...if anyone has BME seedlings, they will hopefully chime in. I have had a couple of BME seedlings, indeed they were all-green and from their leaf shape and texture there was no doubt of their heritage. BME is a poor seed-setter FWIW, I've had the variety for almost a decade and have had maybe a handful of pods over the years. Pieter

I got my 6s Friday, with 128 gigs! The guy asked if I was sure I needed that much memory. Here's hoping the vole explosion has left enough hostas alive in my garden that I don't have to post blurry pics like this one ever again. Thunderbolt rear and Dream Queen forward. She is still in a pot waiting for her forever home, but I like the color comparison. Kathy

Probably the easiest to find and fastest growing

More upright but slightly smaller. Very thick, showy, shiny and a good grower.

Might be the best choice of large, upright gold. It has been slow for me

How about Liberty? I do not have one but on my shopping list now if I can find one. It is on this web forum's openning page?

I would 2nd Sun Power. gold color. I have one that is planted this year. very good grower. The vase shape is very nice. Hopefully it will grow taller next year.

Krugerrand is amazing. A little slow to get started. Mine is the centerpiece of my garden. Not intended that way, but it certainly draws the eye.
It's the golden one in the back, left of the tree.

Also consider Golden Sculpture.

Thai Brass might also be interesting.

My suggestions: Brother Stefan, Montana Aureomarginata, Yellow River, or Victory ... all are large, green / yellow, variegated and upright.

I know you are showing only this one side of your bed, but how about rounding out the bed on the other side, with a couple of medium sized gold leafed hosta with the green margins?

I'm speaking here of a Dick Ward, and Zounds which is its parent and solid gold. It is a stiffly dependable hosta. Take a look at it. Then another gold over there will lighten up the space considerably.

Incidentally, Liberty is a wonderful choice and it is the mascot picture at the top of our forum's front page. Beautiful.

A friend has some Montana Aureomarginata that are definite standouts

Parhelion is large and gold/green with subtle white variegation. Not really distinctly vase shaped, but still has the height along with the size

Liberty would definitely stand out, too. Looks like that area gets sun? If so, the yellow edges on Liberty would turn white. Mine, in the shade, retains yellow edges.

Wow ... thanks for the suggestions .. I have Sun Power in another bed, a hosta friend decided I needed Gold Regal and Victory, so she is sending them to me. And someone on Facebook told me to look at Liberty, so I am going to get that one too and then figure out which will go there and the others will find other spots ... can always find more room for great hosta!

PS: the other side of the bed has Yellow River, Striptease, Great Expectations, Brother Stefan, and a few smaller hosta.

I was going to suggest Liberty also, but you're all over it. Those are some beautiful Hosta you have!
