I'm not sure if anything will "filter" the smoke. I suppose putting the cigarettes out with your garden hose might just invite more trouble.

Nothing edible comes to mind, but for screening, I have Leyland Cypress, euonymous, and Japanese Holly in addition to the arborvitae.

Photinia adds some color and grows fairly quickly, although *some* people think it is far too prevalent around here.

For flowers, have you considered rhododendrons? Not exceptionally fast-growing, but some varieties are pretty dense.

Thank you to all who posted. I ended up buying a Climbing Rose called Golden Showers. It says it is fragrant. I am hoping not only will it provide some privacy for her and i but also the beautiful smell make it helpful to consider quitting smoking. That is what gave me a nudge to quit smoking was beautiful smells I missed. Plus it be beautiful to compliment the fence and I can hand her daughter and her a pretty rose. My husband will build a beautiful trellis to support this and it will be a wonderful addition. Thank you all. 'Golden Showers' is susceptible to black spot in my neighborhood.

Try planting evergreen huckleberry. It's fairly dense, and gets about 8' tall plus edible berries!

Hi! Will huckleberry give berries in the shade or part shade. I am looking for a fruit bush to place in an area that might get shady in a couple years when my bare root fruit trees get big. It is on my south side. I am thinking I may wait to plant there and see what happens. This is on the south side of my house. Thank you.

For blackspot I use Neem oil every 2 weeks. In case of blackspot I use every week till blackspot leaves then resume 2 week spray cycle. Neem oil works awesome for blackspot.
