Mulch bed - Garden suggestions

shw104

Live outside of Baltimore (Zone 7).

Have two existing mulch beds that I need some suggestions of what to plant.

Both are approx. 8'x8' with a mature (15 year old) dog wood tree planted in the center. They have approx. 4" of mulch and are in a well drained, slightly sloping area. They are at each side of my driveway, adjacent to the road. The branches of the trees are cut fairly high so the areas get good sun.

I need suggestions what I can grow in these areas. I'm looking for a few perennials that will grow under these conditions. This area is difficult to water so I'm looking for plants that are fairly drought resistant. I planted a few marigolds in these beds last year that had trouble during the hot dry summer conditions that we had.

Like to add some color and a few plants that will cover a good part of this area. Probably looking for Native type plants for my climate zone.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Let me know what other information I can post to assist.

Thank you!!
