Do you happen to know if it's native or an asian one? If it's evergreen, by the way, those are known as Hexastylis now, not Asarum (as far as I know that applies to the native ones).

One thing I noticed is that my Bisset has gotten so dense that nothing is growing underneath it. I did have some ferns underneath but only saw one frond left last time I checked. I could cut some branches to allow more light in but haven't yet.

There are a few threads on here about pipevine and wild ginger, but no one here has ever posted confirmation that wild ginger works. I keep wanting to try but the deer make short work of my wild ginger. KC

There are about 110-120 species(opinions vary) of Asarum in the world and about half of those are easily or moderately easily cultivated in this area. I would start with some of the Eastern US natives, A. arifolium, A. shuttleworthii, var. harperi(the so-called Callaway Ginger), A. minor, A. virginicum, A. naniflorum and by all means A. speciosum, a species found only in 3 Ala. counties, that has the most spectactular flower(calyx) of any US native! Japanese species that do well here are; A. asperum, A. caulescens(deciduous), A. costatum, A. hexalobum, A. kiusianum, A. kumageanum(1st choice for attractive leaves), A. megacalyx, A. minamitanianum, A. nipponicum, A. sakawanum, a. subglobosum, A. takaoi, A. yakusimensis & A. hirsutisepalum. Chinese species; A. splendens(mentioned above), A. maximum(Panda-faced Ginger), A. campaniforme(Hort.)(species A. campaniflorum?), A. chinensis, A. forbesii, A. delavayi, A. magnificum, A. porphyronotum, A. longerhizomatosum & A. macranthum(Tiawan). I have these, plus others in my garden and they require little or no special attention after becoming established. Largest threat to new plantings is animal curosity and being uprooted. Best trnsplanted in fall or spring, but have reset them successfully anytime during the year. PM me for some sources of many of the mentioned species, two that are located in the metro Atlanta area.
