Almost all seeds are dry, sort of hard, and black or brown when ripe. The pods or flower heads that grow the seeds will turn dry brown or straw-colored, and typically the seeds will be ready to fall out, shake out, float away, etc. This can take a long time - for example I collected butterflyweed seeds last november that were just getting ready to fly. By the way, the wild bergamot is very easy to transplant without really impacting the original plant. At the base of each plant will be small "rummers" (stolons, if you're a botanists) that form new stems in an expanding clump. You can separate a few stems and a couple of stolons (and some soil underneath - use a sharp shovel) from an established clump and transplant. Replace a little soil in the hole you left behind and the original plant will create new growth to replace what you have taken. By transplanting this summer you can have blooming plants nest year. Others such as butterflyweed and blazing start probably won't bloom from seed the first year, but also can't easily be divided or transplanted without destroying the original plant (and bettuerflyweed is really hard to move in my experience). That makes me feel so much better! I have a whole bowl of tomato seeds that I saved this year. And I was wondering as I was mushing the tomatoes and setting them to ferment (I had to use two quart jars to allow enough space for them to sink to the bottom)...Just how many seeds do I really need? And since I couldn't come up with a rational sounding answer, I decided to save as many as my furniture surfaces would allow, LOL! My entire living room is full of saucers full of seeds and my bedroom has corn hanging on the wall drying. Is that obsessive or what? I've got enough tomato seeds to supply every person in the county. Which I will probably share a lot of tomato seeds with neighbors and such. I've been trying to talk everybody into growing gardens again. Most of them used to grow a garden and they got so busy earning a living they let it go. Now with prices the way they are, I think people are reconsidering the importance of growing their own food supply. So, I've got patty pans, white spaghetti, tomato, cukes, watermelon, hot bananas and such drying all over the house. Steph

I don't know about the seeds but you can always give it a try what do you have to lose. If they are the Texas asters I had mine do like daylilies and they had what is called Proliferations. After the plant blooms just leave it and watch for leaves growing on the stem or stalk below the leaves you'll see roots starting to form, allow them to stay on as long as the stem is green and when you can see the roots about 1/4 inch long cut the stem 1 inch above and 1 below the roots. Place in soil or water. If in soil keep moist, not letting it dry out. It takes about 2 month for the Proliferation to form.
