winter hardwood propagation

I posted this on the plant propagation forum but haven't gotten any replies. Since these are all natives, I was hoping someone here might have experience, positive or negative, propagating winter hardwood cuttings of the following species.

You may want to pick up a copy of Bill Cullina's Native Trees, Shrubs and Vines. An entire section is dedicated to the specifics of propagation - seeds, soft and hardwood cuttings, root cuttings, and the timing to succeed.

I would try the local Library for one of Michael Dirr's books on woody plants. Most Libraries can obtain books through their interchange network, if they don't have it on their shelves. You might also try a local new or used book store, if one is available! They seem to be a dying breed around here. Guess people don't have time to read anymore.:Best one to look for is:

The photo indicates that this is a deciduous - loses its leaves for the winter - rhododendron rather than an evergreen azalea. It is probably rhododendron mucronulatum or a hybrid of that species. The same link that rhodyman provided above gives good information about propagation for all types. However... It would be unusual in the extreme (as in never) for any rhododendron to root in water like a willow. The photo shows some seed capsules remaining on the cutting. Should they still contain seeds, you might try planting them and exercising several year's worth of patience before they are large enough to plant out. If there are no seeds, try collecting some capsules next fall. Rhodyman's instructions for seed sowing are at the same place as above.

the following was cut and pasted into this thread.....so does anyone have good success with propagating this way? The easiest way of propagating hibiscus is by hardwood cuttings taken the last month of winter or in early spring. This is the normal pruning time anyway, so avail yourself of the ample supply of wood. Make sure that you have a small makeshift glasshouse or coldframe ready to protect the cuttings from wind, prevent them from drying out, and provide the necessary extra warmth required to encourage root growth. Select strong, straight wood, pencil thickness or a little larger. Weak twisted stems produce equivalent plants; the better the wood the better the plants. Remove all the leaves, by bending them backward against the stem or by cutting off with secateurs. Do not pull or tug them particularly if they are a little dry, for they will strip, pulling out the eyes and tearing the bark. Using a sharp knife make a cut at about 45 degrees through an eye at the base of the cutting, slicing right through in one even stroke. The cutting is then trimmed to a length of 12.5 - 15 cm (5 - 6 in).

Rule of thumb, bottom heat is not required...but it speeds up the callus formation and root initiation. In the past I have callused the cuttings, almost to the point of striking roots, pulled them and stuck them in their container (off of the bottom heat)...they continued to callus and rooted in short order. None of the plants trialed were concidered difficult or "no brainer" easy...a couple of decid. and some broadleaf evergreens. Schmoo

Application of vitamin B-1 (thiamine) to root systems of whole plants does not stimulate root growth. This myth arose from early work on plant growth regulators, called auxins, which were mixed with vitamin B-1. Further research throughout the last half of the 20th century investigating the application of auxins to root systems suggested that auxins may stimulate root growth, but that vitamin B-1 on its own does not. Delving deeper into manufacturer claims, many rely on early research (late 1930s and early 1940s) which has been refuted by subsequent research and/or research done on plant roots excised from the mother plant or grown in artificial media. I probably should have taken a look at those references first. I'll go check out copies today. I have been doing a lot of internet research on these species and have gotten some conflicting results. If Dirr's books do not clear things up, I will ask more specific questions.

Can't help much but sometimes if you cut a stake from a tree and jam it in the soil it will take root. Some trees work better than others for this purpose. I purchased dormant willow stakes for just that purpose and they did grow.
